How to make a tasty Christmas dinner for your pet

With the Christmas season just around the corner, here is a very special recipe for yourdog f rom writer Elaine Everest, author of hit book Canine Cuisine, and a recipe for a f estivedinner for your cat f rom Marie Rayner, a top food blogger and author of ‘The Big Blue BinderBook’. Christmas feast for your dog

Ingredients

One mug of brown rice

One beef stock cube

Half a small but ternut squash

Four large carrots

One head of broccoli

A small bunch of f resh parsley

One t ray of minced turkey

A small carton of chicken liver

Two cloves of garlic

One mug of wholemeal f lour

One mug of oatmeal

Four eggs

Half a mug of vegetable oil

Method

Heat your oven to 190°C or gas mark 5.

Put the brown rice into a pan with the stock cube and cover with boiling water. Bring to the boiland simmer unt il t he rice is cooked but not too sof t .

Meanwhile wash the vegetables. Peel the but ternut squash and chop all vegetables into even-sized pieces and place into a food processor. Blit z unt il t he vegetables resemble f inebreadcrumbs before adding the parsley for a f inal f ive-second blit z.

Place the f inely chopped vegetables into a large mixing bowl along with the wholemeal f lourand oatmeal. Mix together.

Next , place the minced beef and the ox liver into the food processor and blit z along with thegarlic cloves unt il you have a smooth paste. Add the four eggs and mix well together forseveral seconds.

Add this mix to the bowl and st ir together well. At this point , st ir in the cooked rice and add thevegetable oil unt il you have a mixture that is not too runny. It is not essent ial to use all the oil. Ifthe mix becomes too liquid, add a lit t le more oatmeal to st if fen.

Pour into a greased baking t in or two round cake t ins and place into the cent re of the oven.The new-style silicon bakeware is ideal for this recipe as the cake will slide away f rom thecontainer with ease. Bake for 45 minutes or unt il a skewer comes out clean when slid into thecent re of the cake. Turn out onto a cooling rack and leave to cool.

Af ter feeding your dog a port ion of his own cake, allow his meal to go down for an hour or sobefore enjoying a brisk walk with the whole family.

Christmas feast for your cat

Ingredients

56g cooked turkey giblets, ground or f inely minced (liver,heart , neck meat , gizzard) See note*

28g cooked rice

14g of raw, grated carrot

14g chopped spinach (or one cube of f rozen spinachthawed)

1 tsp f ish oil

Method

Heat the f ish oil in a skillet .

Add the ground giblets, rice, carrot and spinach.

Cook and st ir over medium / low heat unt il heated through and the vegetables are sof t .

Remove f rom the heat and allow to cool to room temperature before serving.

Note* - I always cover the giblets with some cold water, bring to the boil and then simmer for several hoursthe day before Christmas so that I have a nicely flavoured broth to make my gravy with.
