The purpose of this document is to go through all necessary steps to install Silver Peak’s VX-Xpress. VX-

Xpress is a free version and only supports one point-to-point deployment.

First you should download the ova file from http://www.vx-xpress.com/

You will be notified with two keys, which are needed for two appliances.

I assume, you have an ESX or ESXi Server 4.0 Update 1 or newer installed. Older or other VMware Versions

are not supported. Before you can deploy the newly downloaded OVF Template, the VMware host must meet

the minimum system requirements.

Note: your CPUs on ESX Hardware must support 64-bit

• CPU Two 64-bit x86 virtual processors for a total of 4 GHz of CPU

capacity

• Memory 2 GB RAM

• Storage 150 GB

• Network Interfaces 2 NICs for installation in Routed Mode

Before deploying the OVF Template, you must create 4 networks

Two Networks will carry traffic, where you will pair one with Management and the other for Data

For MGMT0, you can use the NIC that VMkernel is currently using, or you can pick a different one. In this

example, we’ll pair vmnic0 with MGMT0, and vmnic1 with WAN0.

In the Configuration tab, select Networking (on the left) and click Add Networking

Select Virtual Machine and click on Next

Next, you will use vSwitch0, because we will pair vmnic0 with mgmt0.

Click on Next – The Network Access screen will appear

Change the network label with mgmt0

Click on Next -> Ready to Complete -> Finish

Now, we configure the WAN Port. Click on Add Networking

Make sure, Virtual Machine is selected. Click on Next

Depending on your machine type, you may need to use a different network adapter. I was using vmnic1.

In the Virtual Machines - Connection Settings I change Network Label to wan0

Click on Next -> Ready to Complete -> Finish

In my test-lab, I am using the single-homed Router mode configuration, therefore MGMT1 and LAN0 are not

being used. Because the OVF Template can be used for both configuration modes, you must map them to

virtual switches that are not connected to any physical interface

First, we’ll map MGMT1 – Click on Add Networking

If your ESXi is having additional NICs, you will need to deselect the vmnic2 and select Create a virtual

switch

Click on Next -> Connection Settings and enter the Network Label mgmt1

Click on Next -> Ready to Complete -> Finish

Next, we’ll map LAN0, the same way we did with MGMT1 – Click on Add Networking

This is, how network adapters should look like

Next, we are going to deploy the VX-Xpress virtual appliance’s OVF template

The OVA file is a .tar file containing the OVF template and other required content.

NOTE: If Internet Explorer saved the template as a winRAR (.tar) file, then be sure to change the

extension back to .ova before using the file.,

From the File menu, select Deploy OVF Template...

The following screen appears.

Depending on where you put the OVA file after you downloaded it from the Silver Peak Support portal,

select the appropriate source and click Next.

he OVF Template details display:

Click Next. In the Name and Location screen, either accept the virtual appliance’s default name, or change it

as you like. This is the name by which the hypervisor knows the virtual appliance.

Click Next.

If you have multiple datastores, then the Datastore screen displays only those items which meet the

requirements for minimum contiguous disk space.

Select a datastore, and click Next.

The Disk Format screen appears.

Make sure that Thick provisioned format is selected, and then click Next.

In the network mapping you will see a summary of Source Networks. This is the reason of previous created

networks.

Click Next. The Ready to Complete screen summarizes the VX‑Xpress’ deployment settings

After deploying has been completed, you should see a similar summary of the new virtual appliance

Power on and login – username (admin), password (admin)

Trouble with 64-bit Operation

My hardware is equipped with XEON 5110’s and regarding the specs it supports 64-bit. Even though the

CPUs support 64bit, VMware ESX 4.1 won’t load a 64bit guest unless you’ve enabled Intel’s Visualization

Technology in the BIOS.

Solution:

1. Shut down ESX Server and reboot

2. When booting, enter BIOS settings. (this depends on your system); HP Proliant’s access code = F10

3. Select: Advanced Options

4. Processor Options

5. Intel ® Virtualization Technology set to Enable

6. Save settings and reboot

Trouble with Insufficient video RAM

Solution:

7. Edit the VM settings

8. Select: Video card

9. Select: “Auto-detect video settings”
