Rwanda Partners is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the poor through ethnic reconciliation, education and job creation. Wounded Healers is one of Rwanda Partners’ recent films produced in 2009. The Emmy-nominated film tells the story of ethnic reconciliation after the genocide in Rwanda.

Do I have to do this by myself?

No, Rwanda Partners is here to partner closely with you every step of the way.

Does it cost me anything?

Nope! Although you might want to have some munchies on hand for your friends… or you can make it a potluck! If you plan on hosting a screening party at a large venue such as a church, lecture hall or community center, get creative in your hospitality. We’ll take

care of the cost of sending you a screening package including a free copy of Wounded Healers.

Step 1

Pick a place, date and time. Then invite your friends.

PLACE: What venue offers the most convenience for your attendees and where can you

gather the most interest? A home party is great it’s a casual setting where people can come over for food, drink and catching up. Office lunchrooms, schools, churches and community centers also make great venues and provide opportunities to share the story of reconciliation with a diverse audience.

DATE & TIME: Pick a date that will work best for your guests. Will your target audience have more time after work/school, or on the weekend? We trust your judgment!

INVITE: Create an invitation with your event details. If you’re hosting a public community event, you may want to publicize more widely through local newspapers, posters, or

online invitations. Online invitations are an efficient and inexpensive way to invite your guests. Go to www.evite.com or create an event on www.facebook.com. You may want to theme your film screening party as a “pizza party”, “outdoor movie”, “red carpet event” or a simple “movie night.”

A sample invitation message could look like this:

“You’re invited to watch ‘Wounded Healers’, a documentary made by Rwanda Partners about the power of forgiveness. The film tells the stories of five people (both perpetrators and survivors of the 1994 Rwandan genocide), their reconciliation with each other and

how they are now sharing their story to heal their nation.”

Watch the film!

SET THE STAGE: Make sure there is adequate seating for your guests and the lighting

allows for good visibility of the TV or projector.

INTRODUCE & EXPLAIN THE FILM: Explain a little bit about the context of this film and why you are sharing it. See Appendices 1.

SHOW THE FILM: Put the DVD in your DVD player and press play. As easy as that!

AFTER THE FILM, CAST THE VISION: In the viewing package we have provided you with a discussion guide that includes questions to ask, as well as resources for further reading. If you want more information about the current situation in Rwanda please see

Appendices 3.

PROVIDE SPACE FOR CONVERSATION: For many viewers, this may be the first time they have heard about the reality of post-genocide Rwanda. After watching the film, viewers may feel overwhelmed by the story. Allow time and space for the viewers to

reflect. You may want to encourage them to articulate what they are thinking through questions, art or writing. Invite conversation to happen. We have provided you with a Discussion Guide with ideas of questions to ask. Please let us know if there is anything else you need. Get creative here, this is where you have the freedom to really make an impact.

Encourage your friends to get involved.

One of the best way ways to support Rwanda Partners is to share this story with your

friends and have them do the same.

Here are six opportunities for them to get involved:

1. Host a film screening as well.

2. Host a basket party. The Rwanda Partners Basket Company serves impoverished women and their families in Rwanda. It’s as simple as having a party at your home, work, community centre or church. Every basket purchase helps to empower rural women to rise above poverty through a fair trade wage, life skills training and access to

3. Volunteer your time, talent or treasure. We always need people willing to lend a hand in whatever way possible. If someone at your party wants to explore the possibility of partnering with us, have them give us a call, we’d love to talk to them.

5. Go see Rwanda for yourself! We take a few teams annually to visit our programs and meet the people we serve. Fundraising ideas and support is supplied to committed team members. Introduction to the Film

The documentary film Wounded Healers is a Rwanda Partners production which tells of

stories of two perpetrators and three survivors of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. This film was released in December 2009 by Mark Stendal and Rwanda Partners. It was nominated for an Emmy in the Best Historical/Cultural Documentary category and was recognized as an official selection of the Heartland Film Festival and the Grand Rapids Film Festival.

The film chronicles the extraordinary personal stories of five Rwandans and their post-genocide journey through the stages of extreme hurt, hate, and healing.

The central characters of the film are faced with the dilemma of what to do when the

genocide killers of their families are released from prison and move back into their neighborhood.

Tense face-to-face meetings between survivors and killers eventually lay the foundation for forgiveness and a new future. In the process, viewers come to understand that

forgiveness—however improbable—is truly possible.

“I am absolutely honored to be a part of the making of Wounded Healers. In this film we saw the remarkable capacity of the Rwandan people to forgive - Pascal (one of the main characters in the film) not only forgave the neighbor

who hunted down and killed his 8-month pregnant wife – but when he re-married, the killer was one of the first to be invited to the wedding ceremony. I am completely humbled and challenged by the Rwandans’ capacity for forgiveness. I hope that this film will challenge many in our world to be courageous enough to forgive and be forgiven.”

Rwanda Partners is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the poor through

ethnic reconciliation, education and job creation.

Rwanda Partners’ six years of service has helped to shape our current focus of where our resources (people, financial and training) can most effectively be used in Rwanda to bring about transformed lives. While Rwanda has made improvements in the living
