PREFACEDear Concerned Reader,

If you find that your Father, Mother, Husband, Wife or Grandparent are refusing to consider using a hearing aid; then this resource may be of value to you.

This resource is designed to arm you with factual information and conversation starters you can use to convince your loved one why strong hearing is important for their happiness and long term mental and physical health.

New and old studies (references included in the back of this report) have proven the undisputed link between untreated hearing loss and serious conditions like dementia, high blood pressure and heart attacks. There are also countless cases where untreated hearing loss has caused the breakdown of marriages, serious depression and the painful rift between families and their children.

While it’s understandable that having a hearing test may be a little embarrassing, I’ve found through my many years of experience that the sheer positives of clear hearing outweighs any concerns or hesitations that your loved ones may have.

Successfully treating poor hearing not only allows clear and understandable conversations, but also enables your loved one to experience a more youthful, active and fun lifestyle.

I’ve broken up this report into 3 parts:

• The first part illustrates everyday, common hearing-related issues (and the hidden pains lurking in the undercurrent] I’ve found in most people.

• The second lists the serious health and relationship issues that can and should be avoided by using a hearing aid.

• And the final part will address the concerns and embarrassments that your loved ones may have about wearing a hearing aid.

Use each section as a “quick cheat sheet” and equip yourself with strong reasons why you should book a hearing consultation for your loved one today.

If you have any questions about any of the items in this resource, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’ll be more than happy to help.

To your loved one’s youth!

PART 1DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?WORKPLACE PAINS -

“Ron, I told you to pay forty thousand. Not three thousand! How many times has it been where you messed up the order?”Ron is 56 and struggling with hearing loss at work. His listening has become so poor that his boss is having a hard time trusting him. Embarrassed by this, Ron starts pretending that his hearing was fine. Of course... this often led to shame and eventually, a loss of a promotion.

AVOIDING SOCIAL SITUATIONS -

“Ron Dear, in our lunch with the Smith’s, you could barely hear a word I was saying.”Ron’s wife Julie often picks up on his poor hearing in restaurants or loud outdoor social situations. Ron, being stubborn, just would not admit it. Ron quietly deals with his poor hearing by avoiding any situation with loud background noises. Not a good thing - as Ron routinely turns down any social invitations.

EVERYDAY LIFE AND THE WAY DOWN -

He snapped, “What? I’m not yelling at you! And YES... I AM LISTENING. But I can’t hear the TV now. Good grief, pipe down and turn up the TV... I’m trying to watch the news.”Poor hearing also affects the home environment, particularly marital relationships. The TV often needs to be turned up leading to yelling and conflict at home. There are also the tensions of raised voices and spats over “little” everyday things that could otherwise be avoided.

DISCONNECTING WITH THE GRANDKIDS -

“Dad, why don’t you play with the kids? It’ll be nice if they got to know you more.” Ron cringes and shakes his head. “You know I want to, but they talk too fast and I can’t hear them.” Emily lets out a sigh. Her father has become distant to her and the kids, and she just doesn’t know what to do.People with untreated hearing loss, hear differently. People with hearing loss literally cannot hear the voices of young children. It’s not that they don’t want to... it’s just that they physically can’t.

INCREASING DEMENTIA-

Years passed and Ron’s untreated hearing loss got worse. “Hey kids! Why don’t you play with Grandpa?”. “No thanks. Grandpa doesn’t listen and he always forgets my name. He never listens to my stories and well... he’s kind of weird”.

PG 5

“Untreated hearing loss most often leads to social isolationand depression”

Ron has developed dementia, which was unexpected. It started slow, but no one thought it would turn out this bad.

Have you heard of “use it or lose it?” Its the same with mental alertness, especially in the senior years. Not engaging with others leads to a fogginess, strong introversion and reduced clarity of mind.

SOCIAL ISOLATION AND DEPRESSION -

Months passed and it got worse. Julie, Rons wife, concerned about his increasing isolation, tried to push him into social outings. “Dear, why don’t we go out for a bit? Mark from the Community Club has invited us for lunch, and I thought it would be nice to see our old friends.” Ron frowns in the way he always does. “You go yourself. I’ll just stay in... I’m tired and I want to rest.”Untreated hearing loss most often leads to unconsciously avoiding situations where listening is required. It’s common that people with bad hearing try to keep away from any personal interaction. This often leads to a downward spiral of depression and isolation, and hermit-like behaviour.

BECOMING OLD EARLY-

The most frustrating thing was that in Ron‘s “old” age of 68, he was always falling over and had to be constantly looked after like a child. This really confused Julie. Mark from the Community Club was technically much older than Ron; 84 years old in fact. Yet, he was youthful in his actions and mentally alert as he was when they first became friends 10 years ago. Julie wondered, why couldn’t Ron, her husband, be the same?Mark from the Community Club wore hearing aids early in life. I personally find that wearing hearing aids does NOT mean that you’ve become older, often; it means that you’ve become younger and helps you keep young. Clear hearing allows your loved one to keep engaged mentally, keep clear and active.

PART 1A SUGGESTION FROM THE AUTHOR

“Hearing Aids doesn’t mean you’ve become older; it means you’vebecome younger”

Maybe right now, you might be thinking it’s too late, and that your loved one is already experiencing advanced symptoms of mental fogginess. Take heart. I find that a well-tuned hearing aid can often bring them back to their fun former and youthful selves.

QUICK FACTTHE SCIENCE OF HEARINGDID YOU KNOW THAT PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS PERCEIVE SOUNDS DIFFERENTLY?

It has to do with the frequency and how the human ear canal works.

Low frequency is what is responsible for the volume of speech. As hearing loss gets worse, low frequency sounds become being quieter, or worse yet, can’t be heard at all. This why people with hearing loss need to turn up the TV really really loud.

On the other hand, high frequency sounds is what’s responsible for clarity of

speech. People with hearing loss have trouble understanding words containing

“f”, “ph”, “th”, “s” and “t”.

So that means, if you say...

“Fred called on the phone and said to pick up the kids”,

to the person with hearing loss, it sounds like

“--ed called on --e --one and -aid -o pick up -he kid-”

As you can imagine, not being able to hear can be quite serious (especially when children are involved). In fact, it’s due to this that people with hearing loss are physically unable to clearly hear:

X Young Children – Children speak in high pitches making them very difficult to understand.

X The television (without turning up the sound very loud) – Dialog commonly falls in the frequency range that is hard to hear. Blasting the TV to maximum is the common solution.

X Conversations in restaurants or noisy places – Background sound makes it almost impossible to separate the conversation at hand versus the noise in the room.

X Whispering (like in movie theatres) - Whispers use frequencies that are in the lower end. This means that most whispers are silent to those with profound hearing loss.

With all this hearing loss it’s no wonder your loved one says “pardon me.”

PART 2UNTREATED HEARING LOSS - IT’S WORSE THAN YOU THINKYes - there’s the everyday inconveniences. Not being able to understand conversations is very tough. But it’s much deeper than that. Here are some scientific studies that have found strong links between serious health and relationship issues that can and should be avoided.

HEALTH PROBLEMS:

People with Hearing loss are:

• Likely to have 30% to 40% faster decline in cognitive abilities - Experience a faster decline in cognitive abilities compared to peers without hearing loss.1

• 3 times more likely to fall over - People with mild hearing loss are 3x more likely to have a history of falling. This is a serious issues with brittle bones common in advance ages.2

• Likely to have Higher Blood Pressure and be at More Risk of Heart Attacks - People with low-frequency hearing loss are considered at risk to cardiovascular events.3

• Have shorter life span than their peers - Adults with impaired hearing may have a shorter life span than their peers without hearing problems.4

RELATIONSHIPS:

People with Hearing loss are:

• Significantly more likely to experience severe depression and social isolation - 18 to 69 year olds with untreated hearing loss significantly more likely to experience moderate to severe depression.5

• More likely to report anxiety, paranoia and dementia - In adults, these conditions are 5x more likely in severe, 3x moderate, 2x mild untreated hearing loss.6

• Likely to experience strained marriages and increase spousal fighting - Marriages are 3x more likely to experience problems compared to peers without hearing loss.7

• Likely to have a weaker connection with their kids or grandchildren - Adults with hearing loss are more likely not to have a deep relationship with their kids.8

PART 3SO WHY (OR WHY NOT) HEARING AIDS?Remember how I said how people with hearing loss have trouble understanding words containing “f”, “ph”, “th”, “s” and “t”?

Hearing Aids corrects this imbalance by picking up these sounds and amplifying them. Depending on the model, most hearing aids help in common situations like quiet conversations, watching television, card games around a table, family dinner gatherings, music concerts, church sermons or participating in large meetings.

That said, if your loved one is stubborn, here are some hesitations I’ve found people commonly have.

#1 - I HATE HEARING AIDS!

It’s understandable. Your Hubby, Darling, Nan or Grandfather might probably be thinking of the old style hearing aids.

“I’ll look old! They are too big. They whistle. What will they think of me!?”

The hearing aids of today are much different to the hearing aids common 20 years ago. In fact, they are practically invisible. As a plus, the more advanced ones can connect directly to your smart phone or television so they can enjoy their favourite songs and shows quietly, direct to their eardrums.

*check out page 17 to see!

#2 - NOBODY WEARS HEARING AIDS / I’M TOO YOUNG TO WEAR THEM

70% of Australians with hearing loss are less than 60 years old. It affects millions of people of all ages (many young people also have hearing trouble) and even famous people. The fact is it’s much more widespread than most people think.

For example did you know Bill Clinton, Whoopi Goldberg, Pete Townsend, Huey Lewis our even own ex-prime minister John Howard wear hearing aids too? Not to mention, people even in their forties (and younger) come into Health & Hearing to benefit from hearing aids.

PG 11

“Health & Hearing has the best aftercare support. Get Hearing Aids withConfidence at Health & Hearing”

#3 - IT’S TOO EXPENSIVE!

If you consider that they allow you to experience life in a youthful and fuller way, then you can argue they are too cheap! That said if your loved one is a Pensioner or Ex-Serviceman then they may be entitled to FREE hearing aids due to several Australian Government programs [you can call us in to find out in less than 5 minutes). If not, it’s often the case that Medibank and other private healthcare funds offer generous rebates [again call us on 3366 9355).

#4 - BUT HEARING AIDS MAKE LOOK OLD

Terrible hearing makes you look old. Not the hearing aids! The act of not understanding and having others to repeat themselves is what frustrates onlookers. In fact, hearing aids nowadays are quite common, and we find that almost a third of our Health & Hearings clients are less than 40-years old.

#5 - I’M STILL NOT SURE

We find that out of the thousands of people who’ve bought a hearing aid from Health & Hearing, 95% of them were delighted beyond words. And for the small 5% who found that hearing aids were not right for them, we’ve cheerfully refunded their money. It’s because of the confidence we have in the technology that we can offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee. I encourage your loved one to try the hearing aids on for 14-days - and if he or she is not delighted - we will cheerfully refund ALL their money (minus a small $100 restocking fee). It’s that simple. Health & Hearing loves hearing aids, and we are sure your Hubby, Darting or Parents wilt love them too!

WHAT’S NEXT?MAKING THE BOOKING

There’s no shame in having poor hearing. It affects hundreds of thousands of Australians, young and old. So if your loved one is ready to take the next step to regain perfect hearing,

we suggest you call 3366 9355 to book a hearing appointment. I suggest you ask for a “Free Hearing Consultation” where a qualified Audiologist will check if your loved ones hearing, if it’s okay, and if not, what to do about it.

From my experience, it’s best if you come along with your loved one. This way the Audiologist can answer questions with both of you present, and ensure you’re both comfortable with the process. Appointments commonly take 30 minutes or longer and are unrushed if you want to try a couple hearing aids on for size in the mirror.

HERE’S EXACTLY WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN A HEARING CONSULTATION...

STEP 1.

The Audiologist (most likely me) will sit with you and your loved one so you can ask your important questions about hearing loss. I’ll do my very best to answer them.

I will then ask simple questions about your concerns and document your medical history.

STEP 2.

Then I’ll examine your loved ones ear canal to determine the physical health of their ears. It doesn’t hurt a bit. It’s as easy as having their temperature taken.

STEP 3.

After that, we’ll conduct a baseline hearing test in our sound-proof room. It’s easy. And it only takes minutes. I’ll say “Did you hear this... did you hear that?” Your loved one will experience some real “AH HA moments” as they discover what they can and can’t hear.

STEP 4.

After the test, I will explain the results including specific frequencies that may be causing them painful challenges. I’ll then walk you both through what others in your loved ones situation have done to regain their hearing.

STEP 5.

If it’s appropriate, and will help them -- I’ll show them a range of hearing aids. We will show you the best options for them. These recommendations are totally independent as ‘Health & Hearing’ is a privately owned company with no ties to any one brand or manufacturer. And naturally, you and your loved one is under no obligation to purchase anything from ‘Heath & Hearing’ – now or in the future.

in my 30-plus years in the hearing industry, I’ve seen profound positive changes with families and hearing aids. Not only does clear hearing greatly increase the quality of life, but also allows a second chance to reconnect with the family - but don’t take it from me - have a look at what our many satisfied clients have to say and their

experiences with using these devices on the last page on this document or through www. healthandhearing.com.au/testimonials.

Lastly, while the concern of ‘big bulky’ hearing aids is valid, I find with today’s invisible hearing aid technology, it eliminates any embarrassment that people may have. Check out the next page of this report.

So if you or your loved one is still uncertain, I strongly encourage that you come in and try out a free consultation where you can find out if a hearing aid is right for them. We promise not to be pushy and put on a hard sell. We pride ourselves with a very relaxed atmosphere with a deep respect and care for our clients.

Our values are ‘Kindness’ and ‘Respect’ I am sure you will sense that in every interaction with us. I urge you to call 3366 9355 to help your loved one regain their hearing today.

TESTIMONIALSABOUT OUR SERVICES

My name is Mal Black and I am a veteran with a hearing loss attributable to my service.

Recently Mr. Soren Nielsen, an Audiologist from Health & Hearing Invisible Hearing Solutions, himself an ex serviceman fitted me with two hearing aids which use the latest technology and materials.

They are brilliant and I would not hesitate in recommending that any other veteran (or anyone else for that matter) who has a similar problem, look him up. He will assess your needs in a most professional manner.

He is also fully aware of the procedures and process required by The Department of Veterans Affairs regarding matters such as eligibility etc.

Mr Mal Black

The service I have received from Soren Nielsen is second to none.

I had been wearing hearing aids for 6 years prior to attending the clinic at Health and Hearing in Highpoint Plaza, Ashgrove and had become frustrated with the amount of hearing I was obtaining from them. This hearing loss has forced me to retire from my employment.

I have appreciated the generosity of time and the effort Soren has put into getting things right for me. I was given the opportunity to trial several aids in an attempt to achieve a better result. Soren’s patience and persistence

has resulted in an amazing improvement for me.

I am now able to watch television, listen to the radio and participate in social occasions with more success than for many years. It is great such on-going support to assist me in coping with this disability.

Mrs Margaret MacGinley

I am extremely happy with the advice given over the past eight years and my current ReSound Hearing Aid tuned to my specific hearing needs.

Off the shelf devices cannot compete with the results of Soren’s testing and advice, he thoroughly explains the options and provides the appropriate hearing solution at an economic price.

The benefits of being able to participate with loved ones and interacting with others in everyday situations cannot be overstated and I have no hesitation in recommending Health and Hearing.

I just wanted to drop you a small note of thanks for the service you have so far given me.

I have had severe hearing loss including consonant hearing loss, tinnitus, cochlear damage, round window repairs and now just old age I guess! These losses come from a mixture of shooting, farming machinery noises, steel & misspent youth! You are the first of four hearing professionals I have dealt with in Australia since 1990 who has understood not only the physiotogy of my losses but also the research behind and the technology that is now available to assist my hearing aids and was simply frustrated

as they were more of an encumbrance than help and this was after up to four months testing of one pair.

The last test was only two years ago and it went for four months.

I am now hearing the best I can ever remember and I look forward to a future thanks to you! As a field guide and lecturer my hearing plays an important part in my professional activities and the ability to hear my grandchildren clearly now is giving me great joy.

I am willing to sing your praises anywhere you need me to because of what you have done for me. thank you.
