People
Lets talk about how to handle negative people. Often we find ourselves talking to someone who isbeing rude, condescending, aggressive a jerk, for a lack of a better word. Usually, we either descend to
his level or continue being polite and ruin our day in the process. I dont know about you, but this seems
like the wrong way to go.
So How To Solve This Problem?
1) Move away from the negative topic. Sometimes a person just needs to speak his mind out
and then he will calm down. Do your best to listen to what he or she has to say (here is an article
onactive listening) and be supportive. However, if this dialogue (or monologue, rather) keeps on
going for a long time, change the subject. You can do that by either:
a) Telling a joke that relates to his problemb) Saying something like, Yeah, I feel you but do not ruin your mood even more because of
this
c) Suggesting to talk about movies, books, video games light topics
If that doesnt work, pretend you must go to the bathroom.
2) Do your best not to judge. We all have our bad days, but not all of us know how to deal with our
problems. So do not immediately assume that this person always behaves like that.
3) Stay calm. One of the most valuable lessons Ive learned in my short life time, is not to express
any emotions towards a negative person. Once they see that it is possible to get a reaction from
you, they will want you to listen to them again.
4) Sometimes the negative person is right. If youve made a mistake and someone points it out inan impolite manner, you can get a little bit angry, but also you must learn to accept criticism.
5) Point out something good in a negative person. That may come as a surprise to him, and he
(or she) may not appreciate it right away, but the seed you have planted will grow and have a
good long-term effect on his (and your) mental health.
6) Words matter. There is a great trick to reduce negative emotions change the wording of a
problem. For example, if someone says I feel betrayed, reply with I understand using
someone elses trust is not good or Yeah, being treated unfairly is not good. Softening the
language can reduce unnecessary pressure from the dialogue.
7) Tell him how his complaints wear you down. Ifeverything above didnt work, then being blunt
is a great solution. If that is your friend, he will, probably, apologize for his temper; if not, he
may get angry with you, but thats outside of your control. You should put your mental health
above everything.
8) Just leave. If being blunt did not help, tell your conversation partner that he is a bit too
negative and leave. Simple as that.
