Step-by-step• Figuring out what your brand has to say (what’s the
message you’ll pitch)
• Choosing to write yourself or to pitch journalists
• Choosing the right publication
• How to get the journalist’s or editor’s contacts
• What to include in your pitch for both
• How to maintain those relationships
Figuring out your content - what counts as news-
worthy?
• Launches
• Acquisitions
• New (major) funding
• Corporate social responsibility
• Addressing relevant issues in your community
• Shocking/scandalous
• Human interest
• Timely relevant
• Etc.
First, take inventory of what you have
aka all of the possibly interesting things you have to say that the internet could be interested in
Do you have big news?
Probably not…
When you don’t have news…
• What are your business by-products? (data?)
• What current trends can you associate with your brand?
• What big events can you shed light on?
• What are you an expert in, that you can explain simply?
What are your business by-products?
What trends can you associate with your
brand?
What big events can you shed a light on/comment?
What are you an expert in?
Self-written vs. journalist-written?
There are 2 methods to use
• Pitching Journalists (journalist writes the piece)
• Pitching Editors (you/marketer/ghost writer writes the piece)
How to Pitch Journalists
A few things you need…
• A story/news (something newsworthy)
• A contact
• A pitch
Pitch a journalist if…• it means they can “break” a story (exclusivity helps)
• you’re launching something
• you’ve raised lots of money
• you can offer a unique perspective on a relevant topic
• it’s an interesting human interest story (“Meet Lauris…)
Finding your journalist
• Make a list of the top publications you want to get in
• Stalk journalists, make a list of journalists who write about what you intend to pitch
• Google them!
• Find their email address
Preparing your Pitch
Tips on sending out pitches:
• Pitch on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
• Include “pitch” in the title
• Get to the point quickly
• Add everything they need to be able to write a piece
Pro tip: befriend the journalist
Pitching Tools
• Help a Reporter Out (helpareporter.com)
• Your own, personal list of journalists + their contact info (gold!)
Pitching editors
What you need to pitch editors…
• A written story
• A contact method
• Patience
• Perseverance
Pitch an editor if…
• You’ve written a piece that their audience would find interesting
• You’ve already got something to show (with exceptions)
• You can offer new input to a relevant topic
Don’t pitch an editor if…
• The piece is all about your brand
• You would be angry if they took your brand out (with only a link in your bio)
• You can’t reveal you work for your brand
• The piece is already published somewhere (with exceptions)
How to get in touch
Look for contribution methods…
• Google “accepts guest posts” (add them to your list)
• Check out the About and Contact pages
• Look for editor@… emails
• Google “how to become a [publication name] contributor”
Tips on pitching editors:
• Include the article you want to publish
• Tell them the main idea in the first paragraph of the email
• Give some background on yourself (the author) to make it legit (ex. I’ve written for…)
• Be persistent, follow up!
In summary…
• A long, process with lots of rejection
• Requires patience and perseverance
• Build your contact list early
• In everything to you, be concise and relevant
• And enjoy the fruits of your labour
