Pinched Nerve in FootWhat is it & How you can Treat It?
Pinched Nerve in Foot
• This is when a nerve supplying the entire foot or part of the foot is compressed hence blocking the nerve communication in the foot.
Signs of a Pinched Nerve in Foot
• Numbness in the area supplied by the compressed nerve.
• Burning and tingling sensation on top or beneath the foot.
• Swelling on the area affected.• Pain between the toes especially the forefoot• Pain in the ball of the foot especially when
pressure is applied on it.
Causes of Pinched Nerve in Foot
• Neuroma• Tarsal tunnel syndrome• Plantar Fasciitis• Heel Spurs• Sciatica
Neuroma
• A neuroma is a nerve tumor. • It is caused by the enlargement of the nerve
tissue normally found stuck between the 3rd and 4th toes.
• Signs of neuroma are; a burning sensation, numbness, or tingling between the affected toes & in the ball of foot.
Neuroma
Tarsal tunnel syndrome
• What is the tarsal tunnel? The tarsal tunnel is a space in the foot formed between bones and overlying fibrous tissue. Within the tarsal tunnel lies a nerve called the posterior tibial nerve. The tarsal tunnel is walled on one side by sturdy bones, and on the other by tough fibrous tissue.
What is Tarsal tunnel syndrome?
• Tarsal tunnel syndrome results when the posterior tibial nerve is compressed within the tarsal tunnel.
Signs of Tarsal tunnel syndrome
• Numbness over the bottom of the foot, as well as complaints of pain, burning, and tingling over the base of the foot and heel.
Plantar Fasciitis
• Plantar fasciitis refers to the syndrome of inflammation of the band of tissue that runs from the heel along the arch of the foot
Signs of Plantar Fasciitis
• The most common complaint is pain and stiffness in the bottom of the heel. The heel pain may be dull or sharp. The bottom of the foot may also ache or burn.
The pain is usually worse:• In the morning when you take your first steps• After standing or sitting for a while• When climbing stairs• After intense activity• The pain may develop slowly over time, or suddenly
after intense activity.
Heel Spurs
• A heel spur is a calcium deposit on the underside of the heel bone. On an X-ray, a heel spur protrusion can extend forward by as much as a half-inch.
Signs of Heel Spurs
• Heel spurs often cause no symptoms but can be associated with intermittent or chronic pain -- especially while walking, jogging, or running -- if inflammation develops at the point of the spur formation. In general, the cause of the pain is not the heel spur itself but the soft-tissue injury associated with it.
• Many people describe the pain of heel spurs and plantar fasciitis as a knife or pin sticking into the bottom of their feet when they first stand up in the morning -- a pain that later turns into a dull ache. They often complain that the sharp pain returns after they stand up after sitting for a prolonged period of time.
Sciatica• Sciatica is the name given to any sort of pain that is
caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve.
• The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It runs from the back of your pelvis, through your buttocks, and all the way down both legs, ending at your feet.
• When something compresses or irritates the sciatic nerve, it can cause a pain that radiates out from your lower back and travels down your leg to your calf. Sciatic pain can range from being mild to very painful.
Sciatica
Symptoms of Sciatica
• Numbness• Tingling• Muscle weakness • Loss of tendon reflexes• Pain in the back of the affected thigh, leg and
feet.
Relation between Sciatica and Pinched Nerve in Foot
• The Sciatic nerve supplies the leg and feet and when this nerve is compressed its symptoms radiate through to the affected foot.
