Why Support the RSPO

We know the RSPO is not

perfect

Criticizing the RSPO as a

non-member is not nearly

as effective as changing

the principles and criteria

from within, with our voting

power.

Zoos can join the RSPO

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo was the first zoo to become a member of the RSPO (2010)

Other Zoos have joined: Zoological Society of London

San Diego Global

Indianapolis Zoo

Joining the ranks of many respected conservation organizations

Why should zoos join the RSPO?

As active RSPO members we are able to vote on important resolutions and shape the direction of the palm oil industry.

We recognize there is room for improvement within the RSPO and we want to be part of that change

RSPO Making Progress

Zoos can change the

industry…using RSPO as

the vehicle!

Propose resolutions

Serve on working groups

Demand traceability

Why Support the RSPO

The RSPO is making

measurable progress

It is the only multi-

stakeholder entity

working toward

sustainable palm oil

It is the most effective

route to reach

sustainability

Leading the AZA:

Unified Message & Sharing Tools

CMZ is proud to have

helped many zoos learn

more about palm oil and

develop stronger

awareness programs for

engaging zoo guests.

Our focus is also to unify

the message that zoos

are telling guests.

Why We Do Not Support a

Boycott on Palm Oil

Indonesia and Malaysia struggle

with poverty… developing

countries need some way to

drive their economies

We realize that palm oil would be

replaced with another crop that

could cause worse environmental

problems (like soy in the

Amazon)

China and India are the world’s

largest consumers of palm oil

Palm oil plants can produce 4-10 times more oil per

parcel of land than other oil crops.

**Less land is needed to produce more oil.

How are Animal Care Manuals or AZA

Guidelines created?

We have systematic processes

Do we brainstorm animal guidelines and hope

that most zoos are able to follow them?

Or do we survey zoos, asking many details about

space and many other criteria?

Comparing palm oil issues & sustainability

criteria to something relatable…

Comparing palm oil issues & sustainability

criteria to something relatable…

We are pretty logical and

realistic when it comes to our

field, our expertise

However…we expect an entire

industry to reach pie-in-the-sky

standards, and do it immediately

Do any of you have old-style

exhibits at your zoo? Why?

For three years Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has

facilitated a palm oil awareness survey of US Zoos.

Results are showing that progress is being made

toward a unified message about sustainable palm oil.
