How To Earn $35.00 - $50.00 Per Hour With A Full Or Part Time Business
They Laughed At Me When…
I said I would earn $50.00 an hour without a college education or business experience. But NOT
when I was making over $100.00!
For most of my teens up until my early 20’s, I worked in warehouses making $8.00 – $10.00 an
hour. Or, what most people would consider less than a livable wage.
Because it was so little and would never be enough to support my newborn daughter, I often
found myself dwelling on how I could make more money.
I didn’t go to college and I wasn’t a techie so a high-paying job with a big company wasn’t an
option for me. But I always thought:
“If I could just find something simple that I can do that has more value and
is more in-demand than the skills that I have, I could easily double my income.”
One day, while working for a small company called Foresight Electronics in Sunnyvale, CA, I
was going through their freight invoices when a mysterious detail suddenly caught my eye:
The fact that they were paying OVER $10,000.00 every month to have their product shipments
transported from their location to customers within a 30 mile range.
At that moment, the answer I was desperately searching for struck me like a bolt of
lightning… I could EASILY make $50.00 or even $100.00 an hour delivering freight!
I’ll give you all of the juicy details and tell you exactly how I did it in a moment. But I didn’t just make $50.00 per hour delivering freight. Within a short period of time, I was
actually making more money EVERY single month than I had ever made in an ENTIRE year!
So, I know you’re not going to run out and get a truck because that probably isn’t right for you.
But, the point of me sharing this exciting story is to get you to ask yourself this critical question:
What has more value and is more in-demand than the skills that I presently have? At the time when I was working at that small company, my skills would never have earned me
more than $15.00 an hour since I didn’t have high-tech experience and I never went to college.
It was a grim and difficult reality to accept because I wanted to make more money and I dreaded
the ball and chain. But, I knew I had to do something quickly because I hated living paycheck-to-
paycheck and the vision of being trapped in my low-paying job forever.

The thought of making $50.00 - $100.00 an hour was so exhilarating that I could hardly sleep for
the next week. But, now that I knew how I could make so much money, I had a new problem…
I didn’t have a truck… or the money to buy one!
So what did I do?
To get started, I did what any ambitious [but cautious] person
would do. I went out and rented a truck as I needed it so I
wouldn’t be taking a big risk or putting myself in debt.
Once I had a few customers and the money was coming in on a regular basis - which I was able
to accomplish by networking with the people and companies that I already knew from my
previous job - I used my credit cards to buy my first truck.
Here’s the BIGGEST secret… The obstacle was ALL in my head!
The first thing I had to do was to STOP thinking about my limited skills and what I could NOT
do. This was critical because, as humans, it’s easy for us to focus on where we fall short.
Instead of allowing myself to dwell on my shortcomings, I shifted my thoughts to searching for a
product or service that was needed, in-demand, and that companies (or people) would pay good
money for.
To my great surprise, once I opened my mind to this way of thinking, the idea of delivering
freight came crashing down on me without any effort on my part.
So, again, ask yourself this question:
What has more value and is more in-demand than the skills that I presently have? As a matter of fact, if you’re REALLY serious about earning more money, you should find a
small piece of paper or a post-it note and write the question down.
Once you’ve done that, you should look at it a few times a day. Do this for a while, and you’ll
suddenly begin to see money-making opportunities that you hadn’t noticed before.
Is it magic? No, that’s how the mind works. It’s similar to a search engine. Whatever you put into it, it goes
out and finds for you. This is why focusing on the question above - instead of all of the reasons
why you cannot make more money - is so critical to your success.
To help you uncover a money-making idea that is perfect for you, following are five Income
Boosting Rules.
The Silicon Valley Success Academy Your Golden Path To Success Starts Here
http://SVSuccessAcademy.com - 3 -
Income Boosting Rule # 1: Fill EXISTING needs and desires.
This is critical because starting with novelty items or things that are NOT needed or highly
desired means that you have to convince people to buy them. (Take a walk through the mall
and look at the kiosks. Most of those items would be considered “novelty”.)
If you’re a salesperson and a great “closer” and you know how to sell, convincing people to buy
novelty items may be okay. I wasn’t, so starting with something as simple and necessary as
delivering freight was perfect for me because:
1) It was super easy to do; there were not a lot of required skills and anyone could do it
2) It was an essential service for any company that shipped large quantities of product
3) Because the service was so critical, companies were willing to pay good money for it
4) I didn’t have to convince customers that they needed the service or “sell” them on it
5) My risk and startup cost were relatively low because I rented in the beginning
Income Boosting Rule # 2: Serve people or companies with money AND desire.
This sounds silly I realize, but this rule is critical because there may be many people or
companies that need or can use your product or service, but do not have the money (or the
desire to spend the money) to buy or use it.
When you target perfect customers who have the need AND the desire for your product or
service, they buy from you quickly - without the need for a big sales pitch - and they buy from
you more often.
When I was in the trucking industry, a perfect customer meant BIG money for us. A few
examples of my best Silicon Valley customers included:
The Silicon Valley Success Academy Your Golden Path To Success Starts Here
http://SVSuccessAcademy.com - 4 -
- Google was a $250,000.00 a year account.
- Saia Motor Freight was a $250,000.00 a year account.
- FaceBook was a $100,000.00 a year account
- Williams Sonoma (AKA Pottery Barn) was a $50,000.00 a year account.
Income Boosting Rule # 3: Avoid risk by starting as inexpensively as possible.
When I first started, I rented trucks when I needed them to service my customers. Not simply
because I had a newborn daughter to support and I couldn’t afford to lose money. But also
because I didn’t have any money to risk.
Only when I had consistent revenue coming in and the business had momentum did I go out
and buy my first truck. At that point, I could effortlessly afford the truck and I was able to buy my
second one with cash after just another six months.
Likewise, you should rent or borrow anything you need to get started so you don’t have to spend
more money than you need to. (My first business experiment was installing car stereos. I didn’t
have any tools so I borrowed my father’s and used his garage.)
Income Boosting Rule # 4: To start making money quickly, find out who is ALREADY
selling to the people or companies (customers) that you want to work with.
In the beginning, I had customers that needed their shipments transported and I would service
their needs one at a time. Basically, that meant that I would pick a single shipment up and then
drop it off at its destination. (Below is an image of a typical palletized shipment.)
At that point, I was charging by the pallet so I was
making about $75.00 an hour. As great as that was
- compared to my previous $12.00 an hour salary -
my income nearly tripled again once I discovered
freight contracting.
Working with larger freight companies like Saia,
YRC and USF Reddaway, I could get loaded with
10 - 15 shipments all at once instead of picking up
and dropping off one single shipment at a time.
So, not only was I making more money because of the volume of freight that they handed off to
me. But I was also spending a lot less of my hard earned profits on diesel fuel because loading
up at one terminal saved me a lot of driving.
At the end of the day, I was making $200.00 - $250.00 per hour. I was spending HALF as much
on fuel. And I was serving ten times more customers than I ever could have if I’d gone out and
tried to get the accounts on my own.

Income Boosting Rule # 5: Focus on the value you provide instead of an hourly rate.
For most people, the thought of making $50.00 per hour sounds like a lot of money. It was for
me since I’d topped out at $12.00 per hour at my previous job. But “a lot” is relative and has a
different meaning depending on who you ask.
Let me explain…
As I mentioned briefly, Google was one of our largest accounts. On any given weekday during
the dot-com boom, we would transport 5 - 10 of their servers from a local manufacturer to a
Silicon Valley datacenter. (Their servers were custom made at GEA in Santa Clara, CA.)
Each server we moved for them made us between $120.00 and $180.00 depending on the size
and weight. On average, we charged Google about $1,000.00 for each daily shipment.
The total time to load, transport and unload the servers was about two hours since the
datacenters were no more than 10 miles away.
Do the math, and you quickly realize that the hourly rate comes out to about $500.00.
Does that sound like “a lot” of money?
It probably does. But, when you consider that Google was making hundreds of millions of
dollars on those custom servers with AdWords, $1,000.00 was a petty amount for them to
spend to ensure that they were properly and carefully transported. (Today Google makes
billions on AdWords.)
I’ll admit that we were not the cheapest service providers in the valley.
But Google stuck with us because we got the job done right without issues. Even after
competitors discovered the opportunity and approached them with better rates. (We transported
over ten thousand custom servers for them without a single incident.)
For Google, working with us was the smart thing to do because each server was critical to their
business strategy. If they had an incident with just one, it could have cost them tens of
thousands of dollars.
So, instead of risking tens of thousands of dollars to save a few hundred on transportation, they
worked with us because we’d proven that we knew how to get the job done right.
The bottom line: Your customers have needs and desires and they want a certain value.
When you give them what they want or need, the price you charge is relative.
Now that your eyes have been opened to how easy it is to boost your income when you have
the right mindset, it’s time for you to ask yourself:

What has more value and is more in-demand than the skills that I presently have?
If you don’t have any money-making ideas or special skills, there are two ways you can increase
your income rather quickly and inexpensively:
1) Start with a simple services business that you can do yourself.
I don’t know what your experience is, but here are a few ideas that are fairly low in cost and can
be done with equipment, tools or machinery you can rent, a skill you can learn, or talents you
may already have (and not even realize):
[Mobile] Car, RV or Boat detailing
To Make Money Quickly: Start by washing car dealer’s cars, visit companies that have fleets of
vehicles, or go into affluent neighborhoods where people have expensive cars and will enjoy the
convenience of the service.
[Mobile] Bike repair
To Make Money Quickly: Target people who own expensive bikes in affluent neighborhoods.
People who own $2,500.00 mountain or racing bikes and ride hard like to keep them in optimal
condition.
[Mobile] Equipment repair
To Make Money Quickly: You will either need to have experience using or working with some
type of equipment. Or, you can contact a manufacturer to find out where you can learn. Some
examples of very common equipment that people will pay to have fixed include:
- Lawn mowers (ride on)
- Fork Lifts
- Farm equipment
- Power tools (chain saws, leaf blowers, pressure washers, etc.)
- Compressors and air tools
[Mobile] Dog / pet grooming or training
To Make Money Quickly: Target affluent customers because they will pay for these services.
Additionally, there are fewer service providers that make house calls. If you can go to them, you
offer a wonderful benefit the majority of groomers and trainers do not.
[Mobile] Upholstery or Furniture cleaning / restoration
To Make Money Quickly: Target affluent neighborhoods as they are more likely to have
expensive wood furniture, antiques, or be willing to pay to repair their [high-end] furniture.
Upholstering takes special skills that can be learned or you can hire someone who knows how
to do it already. But basic cleaning and / or restoring furniture can be learned on YouTube.
The Silicon Valley Success Academy Your Golden Path To Success Starts Here
http://SVSuccessAcademy.com - 7 -
Keep in mind that you can also restore wood or antique furniture and “flip” it for a profit. Many
antique dealers go to garage sales and pick the furniture up cheap. Then, they have artists who
do the touchup and restoring for them.
Non-emergency medical transportation
To Make Money Quickly: Find a company that works with government or health care agencies
and be an independent driver for them. (Google “Non-emergency medical transportation”)
This may require a permit because you’re transporting people to doctor’s appointments or other
appointments. But it’s well worth it even if it does because it’s very lucrative and is often paid for
by government programs.
In the Silicon Valley, these independent drivers have a minimum charge of $90.00 - $110.00 for
local transportation. “Local” usually means driving 10 miles or less.
Any more than 10 -15 miles for a single trip and they are often paid a fee of $2.00 - $3.00 per
additional mile. And, best of all, it beats the heck out of driving for Uber or Lyft!
[Mobile] Car / Boat Video and stereo installation
To Make Money Quickly: Focus on boats and expensive water craft. If you know anything about
electronics and understand a DC voltage system, this can be a great starter business for marine
stereo equipment.
Although there are definitely more cars on the road, I suggest you do marine installations (in
boats) instead of cars because everyone does car installs these days. Few, however, will to go
to a customer’s boat to complete the job.
[Mobile] Window tinting
To Make Money Quickly: Work out of your garage and offer a better rate than a shop.
This is a skill that anyone can master in a few weeks with some practice. Many shops charge
between $200.00 - $300.00 for five windows. If you can do a great job out of your garage for
$160.00, you’ll have people (literally) beating a path to your front door.
General yard cleanup, hauling, windows and gutters
To Make Money Quickly: Go into upper middle class and affluent neighborhoods. Or, you can
also solicit Home Owners Associations and property managers as they will have multiple jobs
for you. (This is similar to what I did when I started contracting with freight companies.)
These are some of the oldest and simplest businesses around. But you can easily make $35.00
- $50.00 per hour because homeowners do not - and in many cases - really hate to do them.

And if you have any doubts about how much money a junk removal service makes, take comfort
in the fact that 1-800-Got-Junk makes $200,000,000.00 a year!
Hanging Christmas lights and decorations
To Make Money Quickly: Go into affluent areas where people enjoy having Christmas lights on
display, but do not want to hang them and will pay someone else to put them up.
Yes, there are really seasonal companies that do this for people! Around my house, there’s a company that puts up signs every year. My best guess is that it
must be quite lucrative because I’ve been seeing their signs for the last 10 years, if not longer.
Outdoor Barbeque Grill cleaning
To Make Money Quickly: Go into neighborhoods with affluent people who enjoy entertaining.
The kind of grills you want to clean are the expensive kind that cost thousands of dollars such
as the one in the image below and NOT the $99.00 ones you can buy at Walmart.
The good thing is that there are not many companies who specialize in this service so your
competition is very limited. Start quickly and you’ll likely be the first one in your area.
Specialized Party and event planning
To Make Money Quickly: Don’t be like every other boring planner out there. Offer fun themes,
specialized entertainment or over-the-top experiences that people will talk about for years.
You can really make money in this business if you’re different than every other planner because
people want to enjoy new and exciting experiences.
The simplest way to develop an event a client will love is to find out what they like, enjoy or want
to experience. Once you know these, you simply pull the resources together to make it happen.

Business plan development
To Make Money Quickly: Find business owners or budding Entrepreneurs who are looking for
capital (money) to start or grow their business.
The more capital they need for their startup, the more they will pay for your services. And,
believe it or not, it is easy to do because you can find software that will do it for you.
Consulting / Tutoring / Lessons
To Make Money Quickly: Pick an area of expertise you have experience in, or you enjoy doing.
Consulting services can provide steady income as long as you’re working with medium to larger
companies. This is important to know early in the game as many smaller businesses tend to be
into the “Do-it-yourself” approach. Some of the expertises companies will pay you for include:
- Increasing sales and profits (Finance, marketing, sales, etc.)
- Saving money (Productivity, cost cutting, efficiency, etc.)
- Conflict resolution
- Risk assessment
- Safety training
If you’re offering tutoring or lessons, you should focus on working with affluent families and you
should also be making house calls. Not only will this separate you from a typical “homework
center” or instructor, but it provides an added convenience that people will want and appreciate.
Child proofing homes
To Make Money Quickly: Create in-home safety training services for new parents. Focus on
people who earn a middle to upper income and offer various packages ranging from $99.00 -
$299.00.
This is a business you don’t see very often, but is much in need and is a service that people will
pay for. To provide the greatest value to your customers, you should have:
- Extensive hands-on knowledge
- Handouts with the Do’s and Don’ts
- A complete checklist of potential hazards that new parents should be aware of If you’ve been a stay-at-home parent or a homemaker your entire life, this is a great way to use
your experience and skills to help new parents and make an excellent income doing it.
Inspections
To Make Money Quickly: Chose an area of expertise that has few competitors, or one that you
can do better than other people / companies.
Inspections can consist of many areas of expertise including safety hazards, various types of
tools or equipment, commercial Real Estate, or single family homes.
The Silicon Valley Success Academy Your Golden Path To Success Starts Here
http://SVSuccessAcademy.com - 10 -
If you want to position yourself as the market leader for any type of inspections, you should
focus on a specific type of:
- Real Estate
- Hazard / safety risk
- Equipment
Carpet / Vinyl flooring installation
To Make Money Quickly: Visit local stores or outlets that sell carpet and vinyl flooring, but do not
install it and offer to serve their customers. This is a business that always does well because
people want and need new flooring.
Appliance installation
To Make Money Quickly: Visit local appliance stores that sell washers, dryers, refrigerators and
other large appliances but do not provide installation and offer to serve their customers.
Moving helper
To Make Money Quickly: Help the do-it-yourself mover who rents their own truck but cannot lift
and load everything on their own, or needs the help.
In California, you need a special permit to be a residential mover of “household goods” because
you are in control of and transporting people’s personal possessions.
But, if the do-it-yourself mover rents a U-haul or provides the truck, you do NOT need the permit
since you are only providing a simple service.
Home staging
To Make Money Quickly: Help Realtors decorate homes for sale.
This is a good business if you have an eye for detail. It can also be a subtle, but very easy and
lucrative opportunity to sell furniture because many home buyers end up purchasing some of
the items that are placed in the home for display.
Steam cleaning
To Make Money Quickly: Target fast-food and other restaurants that have a grill because the
“hood” needs to be steam cleaned regularly so grease does not build up.
Auto shops also need this service when they are searching for an oil leak or a vehicle’s engine
is too dirty to work on. The caution with auto shops is that you must perform the service close to
a special drain to avoid pollution streams and rivers. Check with City officials for the details.
The Silicon Valley Success Academy Your Golden Path To Success Starts Here
http://SVSuccessAcademy.com - 11 -
Resume service
To Make Money Quickly: Target people in High-Tech, Finance, Bio-Tech and the Medical fields
because they make the most money and are willing to pay for a good resume.
If you position yourself as a specialized resume writer (or you create separate / individual
websites to target different groups) these people will look for you because the difference
between an okay resume and a spectacular one can be $20,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year.
These are just a few simple ideas that may or may not be right for you. An easy way to find a
ton of money making ideas is to go to the yellow pages and see what types of simple
businesses ALREADY exist.
2) Sell someone else’s products or services as an agent, broker, affiliate or
“partner”.
When I started my trucking company, I owned the trucks. I hired my employees, and I leased
the warehouse. Then, one day it occurred to me that there was an easier way to make money.
After I became a smarter Entrepreneur, I brought in independent truck drivers who had their
own trucks, took care of their own maintenance and paid all of their own expenses.
That was the smartest move I ever made in that business for three reasons:
1) I didn’t need to buy more trucks or take on more fixed expenses to make more money.
2) I didn’t have to hire and manage more employees who wanted a good wage and
benefits. (This also saved me a great deal on insurances and payroll taxes.)
3) I could scale my business to be as big as I wanted and I only paid my contractors
AFTER they completed a job because they were working on “commission”.
If you take a close look at what I was really doing, you’ll see that I had the customers who
needed their shipments transported and I provided work (as the middleman who took a healthy
profit) to the independent truckers. It looked something like this:
Customers ⇒ My Company [Broker] ⇒ Independent Truckers The beauty of this strategy is that you can apply it to just about any industry and you don’t even
need to have a product or provide a service. You just need to have [someone else’s] inventory
to work off of or dependable people (or companies) to complete the services for you.
Yes, you really can build a business and make good money this way. There are many people
who do it all of the time. Here is a small list of people who do this:
- Freight brokers
- Mortgage brokers / agents
The Silicon Valley Success Academy Your Golden Path To Success Starts Here
http://SVSuccessAcademy.com - 12 -
- Real Estate brokers / agents
- Travel agents
- Manufacturer’s representative
- Distributors / Re-sellers
- Insurance brokers / agents
- Financial planners
- Affiliates (in affiliate programs)
And… it gets better because you can make even more money! Once you have a customer base, you’ve created a
sales “pipeline”. With a pipeline in place, you can
partner up with companies that offer complimentary
products and services and you can supply or
broker them to your customer base.
(When you partner up with companies in this way,
it’s often called a “Strategic Alliance”.)
Going back to the example of my trucking
company, once I discovered that I could broker my
customer’s freight to independent truck drivers, it
occurred to me that I could offer other products and
services to my customers for additional profits.
Some of the products and services I offered them included:
- Wooden pallets for shipping
- Packaging materials
- Warehousing services
The most exciting part…
I didn’t have to pay for the products my customers purchased.
I didn’t have to stock the products.
I didn’t have to ship the products.
I didn’t have to lease the warehouse or provide warehousing services (anymore). And, the icing on my cake was that I didn’t have to take any risks or put forth any additional
efforts to boost my profits.
Do you know what that meant? It was all FREE and effortless money that went directly into my bank account every single
month. Best of all, I didn’t have to “work” for it!

Like I always say…There’s an easier way and a hard way to do everything in life. Working
smarter so you can have more free time to do what you love and enjoy life is the easier way.
Trying to figure things out and doing everything alone is the hard way. I know because I tried to
do everything myself in the beginning. Like most small business owners, I worked longer and
harder than I needed to. And I ended up banging my head against the wall in frustration.
Once I realized that I was wasting valuable time and burning up my hard earned money, I found
experienced mentors and I began to do things the easier way. In a relatively short period of
time, I became a Dot-com millionaire in the trucking industry.
The Bottom Line: Don’t waste your time and life trying to “figure it all out” alone.
Find mentors and get help. You’ll not only save time. But you might just save over a million
dollars in mistakes and wasted efforts.
Truthfully, I wish someone would have told me that. But they didn’t. This is why I’m sharing this
important information with you.
