To make the transition from your community college to UNH an easier one, we have developed agreements with four local community colleges where you could be eligible for the Guaranteed Admission Program (G.A.P.):

Gateway Community College

Housatonic Community College

Middlesex Community College

Naugatuck Valley Community College

Check with your Academic Advisor:Determine if you meet the requirements of these programs and fill out the appropriate paperwork. One of the transfer counselors at UNH will assist you in choosing courses that will transfer into your degree program here at UNH while you earn your associate’s degree.

How your courses will transfer:We know how important completing your degree is. The sooner you begin working with our transfer enrollment counselors, the sooner you will receive sound advice on what courses to complete prior to transferring. Keep in mind that remedial courses or those below 100-level are not transferrable to UNH. Only courses where you have received a grade of C or better will be considered for transfer. Your transfer enrollment coun-selor works closely with UNH faculty to check equiva-lencies of courses and award your credits properly.

G.A.P. & PROGRAM-TO-PROGRAM TRANSFER CREDIT EVALUATIONS (TCE)

IN GENERAL, we accept credits if you earn a C or better in the course. We do not award credit for remedial courses. You will earn credit for all courses that meet these criteria, and we will then compare course descrip-tions to see which courses will come in for what!

At the University of New Haven, the core curriculum provides the foundation of our Liberal Arts Education and allows students, while taking their major require-ments, to broaden their horizons. As part of the core curriculum, students improve their communication skills, learn to understand diverse cultures, apply critical analysis skills, develop comprehensive computer skills, become effec-tive citizens of their own country as well as the world, and appreciate the arts.

This guide will help you to better understand the core curriculum and the requirements that each of our students must complete. Working with your Aca-demic Advisor, you will select 40 credits of core courses from each of the six areas of study. In some majors, students have specific requirements for study during their time at UNH. Additionally, some courses may be excluded from the core as they may align too closely with the chosen major of study.

Academic WorksheetThe academic worksheet gives students a preview of their major over four years. The courses are arranged horizontally for each year and vertically for fall and spring semesters. Students taking Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses may use the credits earned to replace some of the requirements on their worksheet.

What program are you studying at UNH, and when do you plan to graduate?I am currently double majoring in Biology Pre-Med and Forensic Science. My anticipated graduation date is May 2016.

Outside of the classroom, in what activities are you involved?Aside from going to class I am involved with Alpha

Phi Omega, which is a community service co-ed fraternity that is new here on campus. I am also part of the Admissions Team (A-Team), which is a student group that gives pro-spective students and families guided tours of campus, and ChargerTHON, which raises money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals through an all-night dance marathon.

How many semesters had you completed prior to transferring to UNH?I had attended two schools prior to the University of New Haven and had come in with four semesters completed.

What made you choose to transfer to UNH?I chose to transfer to the University of New Haven because when I finally figured out that I wanted to do forensic science I realized this was easily the best place to be. The outstanding programs that they offer and the teaching techniques they provide really set you up for a great future in the field. The experiential learning program was one that really stood out to me as a student as well. It showed me a lot about the program and University as a whole. All of the faculty in the department have been or still are a part of the field that they teach. Henry C. Lee is also a huge part of this school, and being as renowned as he is, the opportunity to go to a school that offers a program that he helped design is one of a kind.

How was your application and admissions process? My application process was very smooth and was not problematic in any way. I heard back from the University right around the time that they said I would and got a welcome packet with everything I would need to know about coming to the Univer-sity. Admissions was great as well; everybody in the office is there to truly help you make the best decision for yourself and help along the way. Through the application process, I actually became close with one of the counselors in admissions because we had talked so much just from me asking questions and making visits. She is now one of my go-to people for advice. They truly care and want you to be comfortable and will help you with any questions you may have. At this school, you are not just another student.

What is your favorite thing about UNH?The programs this school offers and the uniqueness of the campus are things that really will catch someone’s eye. The program alone is one-of-a-kind, with experien-tial learning and the way it sets students up with all the knowledge they need for post-grad. It truly is a special school to be a part of. The campus itself also provides a positive atmosphere for the students and offers many ways to get involved. The blue-turf football field is always fun to watch games on, and the number of clubs at this school really gives everyone a chance to find their place.

What advice would you give to future transfer students?Follow your heart, especially when it comes to choosing the right school for you. It is important to have a solid program that will provide what you need to get where you want, but it is also very important for you to be happy. With that being said, make sure with whatever decision is made that campus involvement is something you get into. It gives you something to look forward to and a way to meet people who have similar interests as you. It provides a home away from home.

What was your major and when did you graduate?I was a criminal justice major with a concentration in law enforcement admin-istration. I graduated in May of 2012.

What are you doing now?Currently, I am working as a Police Officer for the City of Oswego, New York.

How many semesters had you completed prior to transferring to UNH?Prior to transferring to the University of New Haven, I received my Associate’s Degree in criminal justice from Onondaga Community College. I was a student there for two years or four semesters.

How was your application and admission process? The application and admission process was very simple. I submitted my application online through the Common Application. After I submitted all of my materials, my transfer enrollment counselor was in contact with me every step of the way. When-ever I had questions about what to do next, he was there to help me out!

Why did you choose to transfer to the University of New Haven?I chose to transfer to the University of New Haven for many reasons. UNH offered the program that I was really interested in and even offered multiple concentrations to really help me get to where I want to be. Another reason is because of the home-like atmosphere on campus. When I visited UNH, everyone was very welcoming and

excited to see me and my family. The greeting was amazing every time. The faculty and staff at UNH truly care about the students, and it was a great feeling. The size of the campus also drew me in. I could literally walk from one end of the campus to the other in 5–6 minutes. The location of UNH was perfect for me, too. It isn’t in a huge city, but it also isn’t out in the country with nothing around it.

What was your favorite thing about UNH?My favorite thing about UNH was something that I don’t believe a lot of students would get at other institutions. It’s the small class sizes, which enabled me to get to know my professors very well. I wasn’t just a number at UNH. The professors cared about my progress and still do. Also, a lot of the professors I had were working in the field while they were teaching, which in turn gave me real-world knowledge, not just textbook knowledge.

In what clubs/organizations were you involved?I was a member of the American Criminal Justice Association, Risk Manager of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, a Resident Assistant with the Office of Residential Life, a student worker in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and also took part in a study abroad opportunity.

My study abroad experience was a two-week trip to Italy, specifically Florence, Rome and Sorrento. While abroad, I received six credits toward my criminal justice degree by taking ethnography and comparative justice courses. Our group met almost every morning for classes, and we conducted research that immersed all of us in the Italian culture. Research topics included Italian views on drinking and driving compared to the U.S. and whether 21 is too high of a drinking age. We also went on pre-arranged excursions that allowed us to learn more about Italy. These trips included tours of the Vatican in Rome, Michelangelo’s Piazza in Florence,

and taking a day trip to the Island of Capri while in Sorrento. We also had spare time to explore the cities we were staying in on our own. Before I went abroad, I only knew a few of the people that were on the trip. By the time I came back, I had a new group of 15 friends that I shared these incredible experiences with. I had an amazing time in Italy, and if I had the chance to go back, I would be there in a heartbeat. I would encourage anyone to study abroad if they have the opportunity.

What advice do you have for transfer students? The advice that I would give to anyone interested in transferring to UNH is to definitely deposit and enroll! The University of New Haven has many different clubs and organizations to get involved in and also many different programs to study. There is always something going on somewhere on campus, thanks to our clubs and organizations. UNH is the place to be!
