How to Design an Effective Web
Presence-Mykalynn Rowland-
Why design your website?O Your website reflects…
O you, or O business that you are presenting
O The world revolves around the internet these daysO important to give good impressions
Why design your website?
O It markets yourself well as a developer/service providerO Makes you look organized/well rounded
O Have information about yourself at the click of a mouse; e.g. O resumeO portfoliosO contact informationO drop boxO links to anything that describes your type
of work etc.
Why is this “bad”?O Bad design can include many things.
O ColorsO type sizeO the layoutO graphics, etc. O easy it is to use.
Is the content well-organized and is the navigation intuitive?
Bad…O http://www.usplastics.com
O TOO much going onO WAY too wordyO WHAT is this site about? Contact, order
etc…O http://www.rzent.co.nr/
O AWEFUL!
Why is this bad?O Color usage
O No bright colors. O Hard on the eyesO Attention on the wrong items.O Its annoying and distractingO Just because you like the colors, does
not mean that they are the right ones to use.
Why is this bad?O Navigation
O ClutteredO Too many lists, it can get monotonous
and annoying to try to sift throughO The navigation bar is the same as all
the othersO Navigation should be the first thing
you see. People are there for a REASON
Why is this bad?O Keep it SIMPLE
O Hard to readO ConfusingO Where do you go first?O The simpler it is, the easier it is, plus
the “cleaner” it looks.
Good…O http://webdesignerwall.com/trends/b
est-of-design-2010O Design choicesO Choose a layout you like and enjoyO Placement of items is crucialO Make something your own! Do not
copy! There’s a difference!
Why are these good?O Simplicity!
O Easy navigationO Easy readingO No cluttered messO No irritating of the browser
Tangent…O In art….
O Space and color play BIG roles in design.
O Color and space move your eye…O GRID STRUCTURE….it’s kind of a big
deal!
Why are these good?O Color choice and typeface choice
O Monochromatic color schemes, especially for background use http://colorschemedesigner.com/
O 3 colors is enough, try not to use more O ONLY use 2 typefaces, then use the
families of that typefacehttp://unitinteractive.com/blog/2008/06/26/better-css-font-stacks/
O No huge type unless it’s the first thing you want someone to see
Why are these good?O Over all feel & photo usage
O You can tell what most sites are about just by looking right at the page or the navigation bar.
O The layout is consistent and eye catching
O All colors match and present the eye with a cooling canvas to look at.
O Photos are strategically placed within the layout
How to achieve GOODO Don’t annoy your visitors
O Grid structure O let the eye flowO look at it all O but easy to navigate
O Follow the rulesO Keep it simple
When in doubt, take it out!
