How to Create an Origami Flapping Bird

Step 1

Gather supplies.• Square paper or• Rectangular sized paper

(8 ½ x 11 shown) and scissors

Tip: Be environmentally friendly and consider using recycled paper.

Begin with square paper. Or create square paper by folding the top corner down diagonally. Cut off the extra rectangle and discard.Tip: create all folds as precise as possible for best results.

Make a diagonal fold. Place the square in front of you so that the bottom corner is pointing toward you. Bring the top corner down to the bottom corner, then crease with your finger.


Step 4

Make another diagonal fold. Rotate the square and fold it again. Make a second crease with your finger to form an "X" shape in your paper.


Step 5

Fold the paper in half. Place the square in front of you with creases pointing upwards. Fold the paper in half and make a crease with your finger.


Step 6

Fold the square in half again. Rotate the folded paper 90 degrees and unfold it. Fold it in half again. Crease the fold with your finger. This will result in two sets of creases, which are creased in opposite directions.


Step 7

Pinch in the sides, lay it flat, and crease outer edges to form a small square. There will be a previously formed crease running from the top corner to the bottom corner.


Step 8

Fold in the right side. With the bottom corner of the square pointing toward you, fold the top layer of the right corner inward so that its edge aligns with the center crease. Crease the fold with your finger.


Step 9

Now fold in the left side. Fold the top layer of the left corner inward so that its edge aligns with the center crease. Crease the fold with your finger. The new folds will resemble a little kite.

Flip it over.

Fold in the right side. With the bottom corner of the square pointing toward you, fold the top layer of the right corner inward so that its edge aligns with the center crease. Crease the fold with your finger.


Step 12

Now fold in the left side. Fold the top layer of the left corner inward so that its edge aligns with the center crease. Crease the fold with your finger. You now have a little kite shape.


Step 13

Crease the tip of the kite. Bend the triangle shape at the top back and forth to create a crease.


FOLD TOP TRIANGLE BACK AND FORTH AND CREASE HERE

Open up the kite. Lift the top layer of the bottom corner up and flatten it. This diamond shape sits on top of the kite shape underneath.

Flip it over. Open up the back side of the kite.


Step 16

Form second diamond shape. Continue lifting the top layer of the bottom corner up and flatten it to create the diamond shape on both sides.


Step 17

Fold the diamond left to right. Lift the top layer of the right corner and bring it to the left corner of the diamond and crease the fold. This is called a book fold.


Step 18

Flip it over.


Step 19

Fold the diamond left to right. Lift the top layer of the right corner and bring it to the left corner of the diamond and crease the fold.


Step 20

Fold the bottom corner to the top. Raise the top layer of the bottom corner of the diamond and fold it up. Crease the center of the diamond.


Step 21

Flip it over.


Step 22

Fold the bottom corner to the top again. Raise the bottom corner of the diamond and fold it up to form a triangle shape.


Step 23

Fold the right side of the triangle to the left. Bring the top layer of the right side of the triangle to the left side of the triangle and crease the fold.

Flip it over.

Fold the right side of the triangle to the left. Bring the top layer of the right side of the triangle to the left side of the triangle and crease the fold.


Step 26

Make the head. Pull out one of the triangles between the folds and carefully pull it outward and downward. Make a crease.


HEAD

Step 27

Make the tail. Take the other triangle that exists between the folds and carefully pull it outward and downward. Make a crease. The shape now resembles a crown.


TAIL

Make the beak. Slightly bend the tip over and crease it to form the beak.


BEAK

Step 29

Fold down the wings. The two large triangles between the head and tail are the wings. Fold each down and form a crease.


WINGFOLD AND

CREASE HERE

Step 30

Flap the wings. Pinch the neck of the bird below the the head portion. Grab the tail and move it back and forth to create the flapping motion. Tip: Loosen the folds at the tail if you have trouble flapping the wings.


PINCH HERE

TO FLAP WINGS, MOVE TAIL BACK AND FORTH

Finished! Great job!

Tip: Don’t give up if your results are not what you had expected. You will improve with each new creation as your fingers get used to the folds.
