The College of Creative Arts (CoCA) at Massey University Wellington is a world-class art and design school. Our graduates are employed all over the world, developing products, and creating experiences, environments and imagery that impact on every aspect of our lives.

We are looking for creative, enthusiastic and dedicated students who demonstrate skill and passion for design and the visual arts. If you would like to apply to Massey please refer to the following guidelines. Applications for selected entry programmes open on 1 July and close on 1 October.

For selected entry programmes all applicants must:

› Meet the requirements for admission to university (your school will be able to advise you on this).

› Complete the selected entry application form for the College of Creative Arts.

From 2014 the College is introducing automatic entry for high achieving students, and fast tracking the portfolio assessment process.

Automatic entry

If you have an Excellence endorsement for level 2 NCEA, including an Excellence endorsement in an approved art, design or technology subject, you will automatically gain provisional entry to our Bachelor of Design or Fine Arts programmes.

There would be no need for a portfolio to be submitted.

This is confirmed once you have achieved University Entrance through level 3 NCEA in the usual way (including 14 credits in one approved art, design or technology subject at level 3).

Fast track portfolio assessment

You can send your portfolio application to the College anytime from 1 July and it will be assessed straight away. That way, if you need to make any changes, you have time to re-submit before the closing date on 1 October.

If your portfolio is successful you will be offered provisional entry tot the Bachelor of Design and Fine Arts programmes, subject to level 3 NCEA results and meeting the criteria for University Entrance (as above).

If you are applying for open entry degrees at CoCA you can apply online at www.massey.ac.nz

Proposed open entry degrees at CoCA include the three year Bachelor of Creative Media Production*, and the Bachelor of Commercial Music# (with practice, technology and industry majors).

Portfolio entry information:

Please supply your portfolio in an A4 clearfile folder. This should contain:

› 12 – 24 pages of work. These must be high quality reproductions (not originals) of your own recent art or design work, including photographs of any three-dimensional work.

› Make sure the folder is clearly labelled with your name and contact details.

› Examples of digital/video work can be supplied on a USB stick. Movies must be in QuickTime format.

› We DO NOT accept CDs, DVDs or links to websites.

Talk with your teacher about what examples of your work from NCEA best demonstrate your skills, strengths and talents. You can also include images from self-directed projects.

We are looking for:

› Work that shows your creative potential: how you generate, explore and develop ideas, experiment with different media, materials, techniques and technologies, and use these to transform ideas into finished work.

› Work that demonstrates how you can think in innovative and contrasting ways, and shows originality, inventiveness and commitment to being creative.

Please include:

› Recent work such as drawings, design ideas, paintings, photographs, and documentation of fashion projects, prototypes, performance, sculptural or installation works.

› Developmental work, such as copies of workbook pages, developmental drawings or working sketches, journals, digital or conventional photographic contact sheets, and screen captures in the case of digital work.

› It’s good to provide notes about the ideas behind your work and how these ideas were translated into their final form.

› Fine art applicants will be asked to attend an interview, either by Skype or in person.

› Please do not include items such as art history assignments or testimonials in your application.
