“Tell Me A Little Bit About Yourself”

• The #1 asked question• Should be a “home run pitch’’ for us• Why does an employer ask this ?

Three parts to the answer: 1. Share briefly about you

- Keyword: BRIEFLY - Nothing that could “get you in trouble” - Your passions, interests, etc.


2. Share two of your FEATURES with the BENEFIT to the employer

FEATURES: What are you proud of? Saved or made the company $ Creative idea Employee of the month, promoted Stability with a past company Can also be personal

FEATURE/BENEFIT PRESENTATION

• Sell the “sizzle with the steak” WIIFT!• Feature: “I have trained people in my past job.”• Benefit: “The direct benefit to you and your

company is that I can hit the ground running and follow directions well—you won’t have to tell me something twice as I’ll get it the 1st time..”

Personal exercise time -- write down 2 of your features w/ benefit to employer

• On an interview, you will want to have 4-5 feature/benefits


3. End with sharing you’ve done your homework:

“….and after doing my research on the company and position I am very excited to be here as this appears to be a great match for me!”

Use “your words” not mine

What Are Your Strengths & Weaknesses?

Strengths: “All done!” “Breathe” 4-5 of them

Weaknesses: • Worst statement, “I don’t have any.”• Ideally, a weakness that is “good & bad”• Must show we have learned & are improving

Know Your “CLAMPS” For $ Question

• Why you want to go to work for them• Why this profession and industry?• Use CLAMPS (In Jobs 4 All Now STEP 1)• Challenge• Lifestyle• Advancement• Motivation, could be Money• Prestige• Stability

The $$$ Question

• Step 7 in Jobs 4 All Now• First person to talk money, loses!• You should already know the salary

range • Glassdoor.com, salary.com

First Know Your “CLAMPS”

• Which ones are you flexible on?• Which ones are non-negotiable• Example: Advancement & Stability• Can use to evaluate profession• “ “ industry• “ “ specific company

The $$$ Question

• Use Linkedin! Talk with people who worked there! (Jobs 4 All Now Steps 4 & 5, past webinars)

• Don’t go on an interview you can’t affordwaste of employers’ time & yours

• How bad do you want this? Willing to make the dream a reality?

• Employer: “What salary are you looking at?”

• Any figure you give is WRONG

Quote too high: “Just cares about $ today and not the future… EXPENSE!

Quote too low: You take a pay cut to start!

The $$$ Question• Know anyone who wants to make less $?• State the obvious with a smile:

“I’d like to start with as much as possible, WHO WOULDN’T?”

• Share why you are here: “HOWEVER, what is most important to me is not the salary. What is most important to me after having completed a “CLAMPS EVALUATION on what I have a passion for in my career is_____ and _______ (advancement based upon my ability and the stability of the company).”

The $$$ Question• Share you’ve done your homework:

“…And after researching your company, position & talking w/ you, your organization has what I am seeking.”• Address the $$ question directly:

“Salary/income is obviously important to everyone, what normally is the salary range of the position?”

• Don’t quote figure when given the range• Your chance to smile with the employer

Don’t have to if not comfortable… But remember everyone likes to smile. You can’t think negative when smiling.

The $$$ Question• Employer: “We normally pay between 50-60k.”• Response smiling: “You don’t have to pay me 60k…..59.9k is fine!” ☺• May feel uncomfortable now, but it works Takes away tensions on both sides Interview becomes more of a conversation vs. interrogation Employer can’t think negative when smiling

THE EMPLOYER IS CONVINCED YOU:

• KNOW what you want (CLAMPS)

• Are an investment not a expense (Not just in it for the $)

• Have done your homework (“After doing my research..”)

• Are looking long term (not just $ TODAY)

Why Did You Leave Your Past Employers?’s

• Employer is thinking, are you going from something (expense) or towards something (investment)

• Have you learned from your experiences• Reasons that make sense

Overqualified

• Why would employer ask this question?

Three reasons: (in no particular order)

1. You will be bored & leave me (turnover & training $)2. I can’t pay you enough $3. You’re good: “You could take my job.”

Now We Can Respond Vs. React

• Smile & agree: “Thanks for sharing that w/ me. If I was you I’d probably feel the same way. I understand that you are probably wondering why would I want this position when in my past I was a _______?

• Share your passion & focus on what YOU want: “HOWEVER, let me share w/ you why this position with your company is outstanding for me.”

• Share you CHOOSE this position & as a result won’t get bored

Now We Can Respond Vs. React•I understand the general compensation•“After doing my research on the position & company, I am confident this is a great opportunity for me and that I can learn from you and we’d make a great team.”•END: “Please don’t think I am here because I just need a job, I am here because I choose & desire this!”

What If We Lack Experience -- Underqualified?

• Employer says, “I wish you had more experience—or, “We are looking at people that have more experience.”

• Just give up and find another company?

Exceed What They Expect• Know the top 3 reasons why the decision maker will hire you

• Ask “The Nod Question” DOES THAT SOUND FAIR?”• They won’t make you work for free• Shows you are an investment, not an
