Future Prospects Under 15’s Hoyland Vikings 16 - 22 Acorn

Acorn U15’s got their season off to winning start with a 22-16 win away at Hoyland Vi-

kings. Acorn started brightly and good ball play with Jarod Sellars and Brad Winter put

Jack Innes over in the corner on 7 minutes. On 20 minutes quick thinking at acting half

saw Jarod Sellars go over from 20 metres. Hoyland pulled one back. But a good show

and go saw Matty Chilton breeze through the Hoyland defence. On 27 minutes an error

by Acorn saw the Vikings go over before the break. After the break, both defences domi-

nated and on 50 minutes good handling put Jack Innes over for his 2nd. Hoyland pres-

sured and went over, but Acorn prevailed. Man of the Match; Ryan Johnson.

Under 16’s Acorn 22 - 22 Featherstone Lions

Another exiting game was watched at Thanet Road as the under 16’s fought out another

thriller, this time against the Featherstone Lions. As seems to be the norm now the u16’s

games are very competitive and this was no exception; in fact there was not possible to

separate the teams in this pulsating 22-22 draw.

Acorn had the better of the first 10 minutes as Featherstone struggled to gain any foot-

hold in the game, Acorns forwards ran hard, with Ben Limbert leading the attack. Acorn

launched an all-out assault the Featherstone line, with Featherstone not able to get out of

their own half. On 12 minutes Callum McDarby found some space to record the first

score, with Jake Calam converting.

This was the only score Acorn managed in the first half, as Featherstone came alive and

counter attacked the Acorn defence. The game went from end to end, however Feather-

stone found more gaps in the Acorn defence than Acorn found in the Featherstone. The

result of finding these gaps allowed Featherstone 3 scores, and led 18-6 at the break.

Another inspired ½ time talk from Acorn’s coach, lifted the team and they came out as

they had in the first half to narrow the gap within 2 minutes when a shrewd piece of skill

from Reece Rushworth, powering his way down the blind side from a tackle, found the

line, with Calam again converting.

Featherstone however extended their lead again with an unconverted try. Acorn were,

however highly motivated and felt that they could still win the game and battled hard

again to get the ascendancy. Jake Calam marshalled the troops around the field superbly

and when all player seemed to have ran their blood to water, Calam gave out a superb

pass to centre Reef Wilson who was too strong to stop and whilst the conversion was

unsuccessful, the team was noticeable lifted. With 10 minutes left to play, both side bat-

tled hard as the sizeable home crowd were treated to a classic encounter. With 2 minutes

on the clock Acorn again worked the ball out wide and again the strong running Reef Wil-

son found a way to score. Now with the score at 20-22, the long range conversion was a

real pressure kick. Calam held his nerve to slot the ball over to level the score.

Jacob Walker had a great game today tackled well, Tom Bedda was huge in defence,

and Jack Burgess never took a backward step either in defence or with ball in hand. Billy

Nicholson was efficient in only his second game partnering Jake Calam in the halves.

Alex Smith, Reece Rushworth and Reece Arthur had their usual big games and Robbie

Langstaff and Adam Penistone were solid on the wings. But the man of the match acco-

lade was unanimously awarded to Ben Limbert whose performance today was a pleasure

to watch.

Welcome

Enjoy the game Enjoy the season

Mick Lumby Chairman

Good afternoon and welcome to Thanet road for our first home game of the 2013/14 season as we extend warm greetings to all from that famous club Wigan St Patricks. Both sides will be looking to get their first premiership wins of the season, following opening day defeats for both squads, especially our lads who travelled to East Hull on the opening day and had control of the game only to let it slip from their grasp. Our main task this season will be to consolidate our place in the top flight since last season’s promotion and prove the forecasters wrong that we will get relegated. The preseason training has gone well for both our open age sides with new ideas and venues put into place and it was pleasant and encouraging that these seasons were well attended Our A team have got off to a great start in the Forty-20 Yorkshire Men's League pre-season cup competition with two hard earned victories and

will be looking to extend the run with a home victory today as we also welcome their opponents Oulton Raiders to our shores. Away from the playing side of things a new Rugby Management Committee has been set and is looking for new members to help in the progress and development of the club. At the moment we have a couple of development plans in progress and due to the hard work of people like Stav, Alan and espe-cially Nick Seattle, who has been a tremendous help to the club over the past months, we have be fortunate enough to have won a grant to redevelop the gym area which will hopefully be open to the signed up players in the next few weeks. Let’s hope the respect given to our visitors today can be channelled into the development areas. Good luck to both our sides today and let’s hope for an entertaining afternoon.

Club News

This seasons 2nd Team have benefitted from the Tops 4 Teams scheme de-signed to help amateur rugby league. Xamax, Help-Link, Plumb Center and Worcester Bosch are collectively funding a sponsorship scheme worth in excess of £100,000. The scheme will equip 114 Brit-ish ARL clubs nationwide with match day kits, consisting of; shirts, socks and shorts, in the signature strip of the sponsored team. All four of the sponsors have previously had a connection with Rugby League and wanted to further reinforce their con-nections by investing in grass roots rugby and supporting an active and healthy lifestyle for young people. The investment became even more pertinent after the government announced its cuts in funding for Rugby League. Coaches Comments Welcome to everybody for the opening home league fixture of the season. Early season preparations have gone well this year and after a couple of warm up games it was into the thick of the action at East Hull last week. It was extremely disappointing after 55 minutes to have the game "won" to come away with a loss after failing to stick to our game plan and allowing the hosts back into the match.

I am expecting an improved performance today all the players are aware of their responsibilities and as all home games will prove to be extremely important we need to get off the mark today. We are all aware a tough season lies ahead but we will be more than competitive and with a good blend of youth and experience we can surprise a few people.

Wigan St Patrick's

This club is infamous for churning out year after year some of the best rugby players ever produced by this great place of Wigan. And to say St Pats is the breeding ground for the traditions of the town and rugby in general doesn’t justify its importance and the depths it effects the town. Some famous players have come through its ranks and there are sure to be some more on their way as we speak as well as into the fu-ture. St Pats is the hub of the towns rugby and it does them proud year on year.

Notable Former Players: Andy Gregory, Shaun Edwards, Joe Egan, Phil Clarke, Shaun Wane, Bob Beswick, Neil Roden, Joe Lydon, Malcolm Alker, Bernard Coyle, Mike Gregory, Andy Platt, Martin Crompton, Sean O'Loughlin, Shaun Briscoe, Martin Gleeson,

The Blue and Gold’s in Action 2nd Team Milford Marlins 06-12 York Acorn By Darren Wint | Monday 11th March 2013

Acorn's cup run continues Acorn continued their forty20 cup campaign with a hard earned away victory at Milford. In a match that was nip and tuck all the way the blue and golds toughed it out to gain the spoils. Joel Johnson opened the scoring on 12 minutes crashing over after a well worked move Antony Chilton goaled. Milford hit back 3 minutes later when lots of goaline pressure saw Ben Huish crashing over Dave Whatmore goaled to level the match. On 30 minutes after good work from Thomas Mackley saw Josh Thompson step inside for a good try Chilton goaled for a 6 point half time lead. The second half remained scoreless and some excellent defence was on show from the visitors to keep the home team side at bay. Excellent for Acorn in a good win were; Jimmy Mountford Daryl North Nathan Hebblethwaite and Josh Mortimer. Man of the Match - Josh Thompson

Yorkshire Men’s League beats the chill! The Forty-20 Yorkshire Men’s League held their 2013 launch night with the Snozone in Castleford providing the venue. Representatives from teams competing in the 2013 season arrived for an evening event which featured a Q&A with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats duo Rich-ard Mathers and Richard Agar, a presentation from Leeds Rhinos head physio Andy Barker on injury prevention and rehab, plus presentations from RFL offi-cials on the media and administrative procedures for the coming campaign. “The evening has been a great way to formally launch our 2013 season,” said Stuart Sheard, Forty-20 Yorkshire Men’s League chairman. “This will be our second season and we are all looking forward to building on the progress of the inaugural season. “Nine new teams have joined us and I would like to officially welcome them into our league. I am sure they will play their part in helping us develop further.” The Forty-20 Cup is already underway whilst the league season will kick-off on Saturday April 6. With everyone looking forward to the new season especially being back in the top flight once again, it gets underway with the sad news of the tragic loss of another acorn old boy, Andy Richmond. Any loss of one of our own is bad enough but at just 51 the announcement that Andy died suddenly and unexpectedly at how a few weeks ago was even harder to take in. Andy came to the club not long after leaving school playing his first game in 1978/79 season. This was the year we started a 2

nd team playing in the York

and district Sunday league and though Andy’s playing career was short he will be best remembered for his tireless efforts behind the scenes. As anyone connected to our amateur game will know, this game is built on the backs of people who give their own time for the pure love of the sport asking for no reward and Andy was right up there with the best of them all. A former club secretary, attending countless Yorkshire and York league meetings he was also a very competent ‘stats’ man-infact if anyone wants to know who played what, where and when during the 80’s than Andy’s books will reveal all. A ‘sporting nut’ he had a love of al sports with a particular liking to following England cricket team and if you ever needed a player for your sports quiz team then Andy was your man. Though he finished his back room work over the river at Heworth he will – and no disrespect to the black and whites always be a true Acorner, and one so sadly missed. He leaves behind a sister Val and bother Chris, himself a former Acorn player.

The Blue and Gold’s in Action 1st Team

East Hull 32-24 York Acorn By Andy Grant | Monday 4th March 2013

Acorn Throw away lead in season opener Acorn were dealt a harsh lesson on their return to the conference premier division as they crashed at East Hull after leading at half time by 22 points to 12. The blue and golds started promisingly when on 3 minutes a Joe Budd pass found winger Arran Thompson who went over in the corner. Slack Acorn tackling on 11 minutes allowed centre Lee Steward to wriggle over stand off Carl Puckering kicked a good goal. Acorn hit straight back on 15 minutes after Andy Gargan was held up Adam Endersby crashed over from close range, Ash Robson goaled. Joe Budd intercepted on 23 minutes and ran the length of the field for a sensational try Robson goaled and Acorn had a 10 point lead. Second row Loz Wildbore got Easts back into it on 32 minutes after a good break down the centre of the field Puckering goaled. A superb Tim Elliott kick saw Joe Porter re-gather on the struck of half time and with Robson goaling Acorn were sitting pretty at the break. Robson kicked a penalty on 54 minutes and with the game potentially in the bag Acorn began to implode on 58 minutes prop Chris Lythe took a short pass to cross, the reliable Puckering goaled. After an Acorn knock on Easts continued to press and second row Ryan Steen scored on 62 minutes with Puckering goaled to lock the scores at 24 each. A puckering field goal on 73 minutes gave the home side the lead for the first time in the match and the stand off scored a try of his own on 78 minutes with a conversion to seal the win he also rubbed salt into the wound with a final minute field goal to round off the
