Sir Joseph Banks first presented and made this flower known in Britain in 1773. In that year, he was acting as director of the Royal gardens at Kew. It was given as a gift to King George III. In reverence of Queen Charlotte, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who at that time was present at Kew, it was named as Strelitzia. At present, it is the official flower of Los Angeles.

As to its cultivation, a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius has to be maintained. It should be watered regularly, especially during summers but kept dry in the winter season. A bottom-heat of 21 degrees Celsius is necessary for initial growth. With proper care, it blooms in spring and early summer and should not be removed from their pots. Some achieve flowering size from two to three years, and some others you need to wait for ten long years. When the plant reaches its maturity, re-potting should be avoided to prevent the roots from being damaged.
