Sir Joseph Banks first presented and made this flower known in Britain in 1773. In that year, he was acting as director of the Royal gardens at Kew. It was given as a gift to King George III. In reverence of Queen Charlotte, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who at that time was present at Kew, it was named as Strelitzia. At present, it is the official flower of Los Angeles.
