Dealing With Project Team Problems
It happens to most teams: at some point, the team doesn’t seem to be working as well as it should.
You may have a nagging suspicion that things could be more efficient…or it may be very obvious that the work just isn’t getting done.
Sometimes the first thing you notice is that people aren’t coming to team meetings anymore…or that they come, but don’t seem to have any energy for the project.
Perhaps the initial excitement has worn off, other priorities have been
established, or frustration at the magnitude of the task has set it.

How to prevent this from happening:
Follow the suggestions from Videos 1 - 6 Return to your Project Charter and confirm that the team knows the
Goals, Roles and Procedures. Take time on a regular basis to assess how the team is doing, identify
any issues, and make necessary adjustments. (Think of this as the Control phase of your team, where you monitor performance to ensure it doesn’t deteriorate.)
Not all problems can be prevented. What should you do when you encounter difficulties?
You need to act quickly to figure out what’s going on, and then do what is required to get the team back on track.

WHAT TO DO:1. Use the Goals, Roles, and Procedures Pyramid and associated explanation to identify the possible area of the team’s problems.
2. If you need to pinpoint them more Specifically, have the entire project team take the Project Team Effectiveness Survey. Look at individual scores and collective team scores to identify areas you need to address.
3. Follow the guidelines for dealing with the system issues of the problems.
4. Look at the Common Team Problemschecklist to ensure you are not worrying needlessly.
5. Where possible, do this analysis and discussion as a team.

Problem Area: Interpersonal RelationshipsTeam members seem not to be getting along. There may be arguing, accusations, conflicts, refusals to work with each other, etc...
Where to look for Possible Cause:Start by looking at the next-higher level on the pyramid, that is, at team procedures. Are the right procedures in place? Have members agreed to them? Are they being enforced?
If procedures are in order, look up one more level: at member roles. Are they clearly defined? Agreed upon? Free of conflict?
If roles are in order, look at the team goals. Are they clear? Agreed upon? Free from conflict?
