Eddystone Beacons For Smart Cities Overview

There are many exciting possibilities with Google's Eddystone Bluetooth beacon format. Cities need to be taking advantage.

In this slideshare, we go over the different Eddystone packets, case studies and possibilities for cities.

EDDYSTONE BEACON BRIEFING

Eddystone Beacons are small devices that you can place virtually anywhere. They emit an identifying signal that can be picked up by a smartphone and trigger content. They can be used for indoor mapping or releasing messages relevant to the user’s location. Eddystone Beacons were launched in 2015 by Google and are “competition” to Apple’s iBeacon launched in 2013.

It contains a “traditional” identifier of a beacon. An app installed on the phone can use the identifier to trigger desired action, just like with iBeacon.

Sends out a URL (you do not need an app)

Designed to be broadcast by the beacon alongside the “data” packets (i.e., UID and/or URL) for fleet management

Designed for security. It only broadcasts the random identifier, and thus secures you against both spoofing and hijacking.

London Buses Passengers who have the Chrome browser installed on either the iPhone or Android can get contextual messages from beacons. They do not need to install an app. These messages could include real-time route updates or notifications that they are about to reach their stop. Brands will also be able to use the beacons to advertise to commuters.

Waze’s Beacons Waze, the collaborative app acquired by Google that helps drivers get around, recently began experimenting with beacons in tunnels. GPS signals cut out when driving through tunnels and so the beacons would help drivers navigate when inside.

CVS Pharmacy and Google Nearby

CVS Pharmacy is using Google’s new Nearby beacon program. It allows messages to be sent via beacons directly to Google Play. Nearby basically pushes people to the beacon applications of merchants. While CVS is using Nearby to tell shoppers that they can send photos for in-store printing within their app, you do not even need an app to send out Nearby Notifications.

The Travlr by Samsonite app will

work with beacons that can be built

into Samsonite Track&Go suitcases.

The beacons, built by Accent

Systems, will be among the first to

use Google’s recently launched frame

Ephemeral Identifiers (EIDs), a frame

from Eddystone. EID is particularly

private and secure and it allows

suitcases to be easily and privately

tracked by its owner.

Food trucks sometimes

proudly displayed their

beacons, while others

mounted them to the inside

wall. Some vendors chose to

place them near registers,

while others chose to mount

them under a table or just

inside the awning of their

tents.
