Introduction
Most of our food comes from farms, but the cow gives us many things, such as milk, cream and butter.
Cows Grazing
Cows are usually milked twice a day at
about 6am in the morning and 5pm in the
evening. Nowadays, cows are milked by
machine. It takes about 5 minutes for 1 cow
to be milked by machine.

Storing Milk
The milk is refrigerated at 4 degrees Celsius
for 2 days. After the milk has been collected,
the storages are cleaned before the farmer
milks again.
Tankers
The milk is collected every 1 or 2 days. The
trucks that collect the milk are called tankers, and they are made from special stainless steel to keep the milk cool. The truck drivers are milk graders, who accept good qualities of milk and reject bad qualities of milk. The tanker then transports the milk to the factories for laboratory testing.

Laboratory Testing
Samples of milk are tested for milk
fat, protein and bacteria. It is
important that the samples are
stored correctly.
Laboratory Testing
Laboratory Testing
The milk is further processed in the storage
to kill bacteria that could be harmful to
people, (Pasteurisation) and to make sure
that the milk fat has evenly spread,
(Homogenisation).
Laboratory Testing
The milk is then sent to the shops in
refrigerated trucks.
