What is mediation?

Mediation is a process for handling conflict in which two or more parties involved in a dispute

meet with a neutral, third party mediator to discuss the issues and attempt to reach

a voluntary agreement.

What is the role of the mediator?

The mediator facilitates dialogue between the parties to help them develop their own resolution to their issues and concerns. Agreements reached

In both the receptive and productive modes, the written and/or oral activities of mediation make communication possible between persons who are unable, for whatever reason, to communicate with each other directly. Translation or interpretation, a paraphrase, summary or record, provides for a third party a (re)formulation of a source text to which this third party does not have direct access. Mediating language activities – (re)processing an existing text – occupy an important place in the normal linguistic functioning of our societies.

Helen Keller, who overcame blindness and deafness to become a leading social activist in the early 20th century, wrote:

I am only one, but still I am one.

I cannot do everything, but still I can do something.

And, because I cannot do every-thing,

I will not refuse to do the something I can do.
