How Hinge Affects Cover Design
The first line o text is centered horizontally between the ar lef edge o the spine and ar right edge o the cover. In otherwords, the text is centered horizontally along an 8.875 width that includes both the hinge and cover width. Notice how it
is arther to the lef than the second line o text under it. Also note that the S will be inside o the hinge, which could haveundesirable results because this area becomes condensed to allow the book to open.
The second line o text is centered horizontally between the width o the cover only and ignores the 0.375 hinge area in
terms o placement. Note, however, that the photo background still extends in to the spine area, denoted by the red box.
This illustration assumes the book is 8.5 by 11 but the same concepts work no matter what the size. In addition, the sameconcepts can be applied to the back cover by simply moving the hinge (red area) to the right side).
