How has Japan Changed?
Learning Outcome
To be able to describe and explain how living on a group of islands, the Japanese
have developed a distinctive culture and way of life which combines tradition
with modern living.
Note today’s Title, Date, and Learning Outcome on a new page in your jotter. Study pages 114 and
115 of your textbook. Copy the paragraph below into your notes.
The Japanese have developed a distinctive culture and way of life, which combines tradition with modern living. The
traditional way of life in Japan has developed slowly over many hundreds of years. The modern way of life has
developed quickly during the last 60 years.
ACTIVITIES
1. Complete Activity 1 on page 115, discuss the answers in your
groups and feed back to the class.
2. Studying the larger copy of the diagram opposite, copy and
complete the table below by writing the information in the boxes under the
correct headings (use a full page, one has been done for you).

Short holidays in Japan
Family holidays to distant places
3. On your table join up with arrows the matching pairs of statements that show the contrasts between
traditional and modern Japan.
4. Working in pairs or individually, compile ‘A guide to Traditional and Modern Japanese
life in the 21st Century’ (this will be started in class and finished as homework, note in diaries,
ensure if you are working in a pair it is someone you can work with outside the classroom)
Your guide:
Will include at least 3 contrasts between traditional and modern living in Japan. You could
present information about, for example, customs, family life, housing, food, holidays, sport,
clothes and industry. Writing a description for each of the changes.
Should include pictures/drawings or sketches to illustrate the contrasts between traditional and
modern lifestyles.
Could included explanation about your opinion on the
changes in lifestyle:
a. Do you think the changes benefit Japan?
b. Who do you think likes or dislikes the changes?
