Pedestrian-Related Accidents
“In the USA alone, there are 19,000 forklift/pedestrian accidents each year.”- www.intellaliftparts.com- Training and proper procedure can minimize likelihood to
pedestrian-related accidents
Pedestrian SafetyIt’s More Than Common Sense
• Good judgment is not the whole solution
• Conditions that can cause accidents:– Complacency– Distractions to both pedestrians and
operators– Equipment failures
• Can be damaging to company reputation
A Pedestrian Point-of-View
The following are actions pedestrians do while walking the facility that may distract them from dangers:• Texting• Talking on the phone• Conversing with a fellow pedestrian• Writing• Distraction of something other than
nearby equipment• Radio in the ear
Minimizing Pedestrian Distractions
• Pedestrians need to be trained, too– Not just the operators
• Pedestrians have the right away – But pedestrians need to know
forklifts are not cars
• Training is the most effective method to minimize pedestrian-related casualties
The Blue L.E.D. Safety Spot Light
Outside of training, facility procedures, well maintained equipment, and a well designed facility, the Blue L.E.D. Safety Spot Light is one of the best early warning systems you can use on forklifts for pedestrians walking facilities.
The Blue L.E.D. Safety Spot Light
• As the forklift travels, a bright blue light glides across the floor about 15 feet ahead of or behind letting pedestrians know that a forklift is approaching
• Can be mounted in front of or behind the forklift (or both)• When workers are alerted by the bright light moving across the floor,
they know a vehicle is on the way• Since the light moves only when the vehicle does, pedestrians can
understand when the vehicle is stationary or on the move.
The Value of Blue Lights
• Warning sign in noisy environments• Use in blind intersections• Distracted pedestrians
