HOW DO TEENS SPEND THEIR TIME ON FACEBOOK?
Background Information Facebook• Worldwide social network service and
website• 500 million active users today• Can also be used on, cell phones, iPod
touches, and iPads etc.• One can do many things on Facebook
-Games/Apps-Chatting-Browsing walls or people
Purpose
How do teens spend their time on Facebook?
How much time do they spend on each activity while on Facebook?
Variable Control within the Purpose
Independent Variable: The day the study is conducted on (Wednesday and Saturday)
Dependent Variable: The amount of time the participants spend on activities on Facebook and what activities they pursue on Facebook
Hypothesis It is hypothesized that more of the
participants will go on Facebook on Saturday than on Wednesday and most of them spend their time checking their news feed and wall-posting on their friend’s walls.
Procedure Create survey. Distribute survey out to participants online. Analyze results from survey. Create journal diary Ask participants to start logging on their first
journal diary on Wednesday, January 5th, 2011.
Ask participants log on their second journal diary on Saturday, January 8th, 2011.
Record results given from participants. Organize data in data tables.

Data Interpretation Plan Facebook Survey-Participants opinion on
Facebook and how they regularly use Facebook
Online Journal Diaries used to collect their activity on Facebook

Results On the Wednesday journals: - Most productive activity: chatting or reading their news feed
- Least productive activity: browsing the profiles of their friends -Total time the participants spent on Facebook ranged from eleven minutes to one hour and thirty minutes.
On the Saturday journals:-Most productive activity: chatting and reading their news feed - Least productive activity :browsing their friends’ profiles or playing the games that are offered on Facebook - Total time the participants spent on Facebook ranged from twenty-five minutes to three hours and thirty-three minutes.
Survey Results:-participants rate Facebook, overall on how they felt about Facebook, an average of a 7 out of 10- Most participants said that they went on Facebook because they had nothing better to do rather than because it was fun or that they wanted to go on Facebook just because everyone else does.
Conclusion
Hypothesized that more of the participants will go on Facebook on Saturday than on Wednesday and most of them will spend their time checking their news feed and wall-posting on their friend’s walls.
Proven and disproven hypothesis Data shows that 5 out of 6 participants who went on
Facebook on Saturday spent more time on Facebook than on Wednesday
On both Wednesday and Saturday, 5 out of the 6 participants mostly spent time on checking their news feed or chatting with their friends
Paticipants didn’t have their time limited on Facebook Most participants had 1-2 hours of extracurricular
activities and 1-2 hours of homework

Errors:-Participants might not be very willing to do project-Participants may have not filled in the data correctly or completely-Some participants did not fully comprehend what to do
Improvements:-Participants could have been given some incentives-Make project easier and shorter with some advice given from participants-Elaborate more;have some additional peers look over work
Future work:-the comparison of the amount of time students spend IM'ing or chatting online versus the use of talking on their cell phones
