What characters have you included in your film and what social groups do they represent (e.g. what gender, age, class, ethnicity, etc.)?

Primarily in our film opening only two characters are seen, who are the main characters and they are both categorised in the same way but have a few differences between them. Both being from the same ethnic background ; both being black .They are also around the same age as one another showing another similarity between them. However from the clothes they both are wearing we can see a clearly the stereotypical division in the class between the two main characters. Where the female character, also another difference between, is wearing elegant and sophisticated clothing which suggest she is in a high profession where she has to dress accordingly depending on the work environment she would be in, in her every day life. On the other hand the male character seems to be a polar opposite to this character because of the clothes he is wearing. Clothing that typically wouldn’t be worn by someone who would be in the same class as this female character, wearing a hoodie and tracksuits . In this screen grab we tried to show how different the two characters were to one another, someone who is successful allowing them to by clothes suited for their age and the other not so fortunate who has to settle with what he’s got , or not in this case which reinforces the concept of our storyline, of how envious he is towards her.

How have you constructed ideas about your character through mise en scene, camerawork, editing and sound?

In our film opening the female male character are represent in two different way, the female character being more vulnerable and the male character more determined and strong minded. The mise en scene and camerawork really helped us to achieve this. This point of view shot of the character concentrating on her phone makes it seem as if she is more vulnerable in her current situation as we are watching from the eyes of the villain looking down at her and what she’s doing. As we are watching from his point it connotes the fact he has more power than her at this moment as anything could happen in this moment and its due to the fact that she doesn’t know that he is in her car with at. It empowers the villain and diminishes the power that women holds in her own car, making her more fragile and innocent. The man then proceeds into touching the woman at which the point the music for this section reaches its apex and is the most dramatic , representing the innocence of the female character and the situation is intensifying due to the intensity of the music but she just doesn’t know it yet at this point, until he touches her. From the picture below the use of this mid shot helps us to fully establish this scene , as we can see the male character towering over the female character, suggestive of the fact that he has some how succeed in his attempt to prove himself capable getting what he wants. linking back to the representation of him being determined and strong minded, showing his envious side, the side which we wanted to come out showing why he was represented in this way.

To what extent are your character representations typical of your film’s genre? Compare, with examples from real films.

There is some comparative elements between our film and the film of the same genre fatal attraction. The villain in our film and Glen closes characters both exhibit behaviour of an impulsive nature which make them exceptionally determined to get what every they have there eyes set. In the case of fatal attraction she abducts her lovers child in order to put him into a frantic and vulnerable state which makes him want to find her. She is doing this in order to get his attention as she feels abandoned and neglected by her lover as he already has someone who he loves, she was just a distraction in his eyes. In our film some of the key features of fatal attraction correlate to our film as he in the same way acts the same as Glen close’s character because he is resentful towards her which makes him act out in ways to hurt her, by kidnapping her. In the same way Glen closes character is resentful towards Michael douglas’ character and does what ever she can to hurt him. Though their situations are slightly different to one another they both exhibit the same behaviour and emotion, showing how the way we represented him is not uncommon and cane be seen in real life media

In what ways do your representations reinforce or challenge social stereotypes?

I think that in our film we are trying to reinforce the fact that more female women need to be involved in more films as a major role than taking a part very minimal. In a research by ‘London feminist film festival’ it showed that only 32.8% of women have speaking roles within films which shows the lesser focus woman have in films on films on a whole. Impacting why we chose to have a female character and the centre of our films. Further more in a 2014 a research conducted by ‘Indie wire’ it shows that 74% of female characters were white. African-American/black characters made up 11%, Latinas 4%, Asian 4%, otherworldly 3%, and other 4%. This 11% is a small amount compared to the 74% of white characters that is shown on screens which influenced our decision making in picking black lead characters to reinforce the fact that black actors are not always seen in a lead role in everyday films and media texts. Also according to ‘Indie wire’ , ‘Females of all ages were more likely than males to be shown in sexy attire (27.9% of females vs. 8% of males), with some nudity’ which doesn’t always show woman in a respectable manner, they can be just be seen as a sex symbol which is why we chose not to follow this convention and divert from the ‘norm’ which we see often in everyday films. Hence why we chose to dress our lead female character in very modest clothes , which doesn’t show anything to revealing for audiences to be focused on her physical appearance but to focus on the story that we are trying to convey. In today’s society younger black males are becoming more and more ridiculed by the way they act and the clothes they wear and are characterized as men who are more likely to get into trouble by authority and do things that are not seen unacceptable in the eyes of the law. Though our male character does have some of the characteristics that they are said to exhibit, we did not intentionally decide to stereotype our male character in this way ,which could been seen as a negative representation of young black males. The concept and development of this character occurred due to events that unintentionally unfolded whilst developing our story
