What is the Canadian Food
Inspection Agency?
It is a government agency that is dedicated to protecting Canadians from
food safety hazards and manages food safety
emergencies.
What is the Vision of the CFIA?
“To excel as a science based regulator, trusted
and respected by Canadians and the
international community.”
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency:
“Protects Canadians from preventable health risks.”
“Protects consumers through a fair and effective food, animal and plant regulatory regime that supports competitive domestic and international markets.”
“Sustains the plant and animal resource base.”
“Contributes to the security of Canada’s food supply and agricultural resource base and provides sound agency management.”
Sets, maintains and assesses quality controls.
Roles in Food SafetyFood safety responsibilities are shared by every level of government, industry
and consumers.
Roles in Food SafetyGovernment:
The CFIA helps keep our food safe with the help of many organizations from different levels of government
(municipal, provincial, territorial and federal).
Industry: There are very strict rules that
Industries must follow when it comes to handling, manufacturing and
processing food. If a problem occurs they work with
the CFIA to fix the problem and remove any unsafe foods.
Consumers: Consumers depend on the CFIA to
ensure that the food they purchase is safe to eat. Consumers also have a role in making sure they keep their
food safe as they prepare it at home.
How Does the CFIA Help
Ensure Food Safety?
Enforces Canada’s packaging and labelling laws
Checks labels for accuracy Confirms that any information that is given
to consumers is honest in regards to: the identity of the product, the contents,
weight, nutritional labels and health claims
Ensures that food is safe for consumption and
bacteria freeThis leads us to…
What is a Vision Sensor?
A vision sensor is a type of system used in manufacturing to
inspect products for quality control.
What does a Vision Sensor consist of?
A vision sensor system consists of a digital camera (or cameras), direct lighting,
computer software, touch screen display (user
interface), and a computer processor

How does a Vision Sensor work?
A vision sensor captures data by the use of a digital camera. When the images are processed, they are then analyzed and compared to specific criteria, which has been created in the software package. This criteria
has to meet CFIA standards.
CriteriaCriteria can specify many details for
inspection, such as:
Barcodes Blot or stain detection
Bacteria ColoursExpiration dates LabelsMeasurements Object alignmentShapes SizeQuantities Weight
Vision Sensors can inspect and identify these defects with increased accuracy, higher
productivity and cost savings. They surpass human efficiency, for example some sensors can
inspect 1,000 pieces per minute.

Vision sensors can help identify any
contaminants so that product can be disposed of before getting to the consumer.
Vision sensors can check that expiration dates are
properly labeled and easy to read.
Vision sensors can help verify that the label is placed correctly on a product. In some cases this
can help make sure people don’t
accidentally eat something they have an allergy to.
Vision sensors can ensure that foods have the correct
colour, size, shape and quantity.
“The CFIA works from the farm gate to the consumer’s
plate to protect public health.” They “safeguard
not just the food supply, but also the plants and animals
upon which safe and high quality food depends.”
