Hearthstone's Ulterieure: Fatigue Decks

Most trading card games have the idea of the mill deck (named after the Millstone card in Magic).These are decks that attempt to exhaust an opponent's draw deck as quickly as possible, forcingthem into a loss. In games like Magic: The Gathering, a loss immediately occurs as soon as anattempt is made to draw from an empty deck (such as the beginning of every turn). The quicker aplayer can active their opponent into draws, and lots of them, the quicker that player can win thegame.

Hearthstone is a little chiffre different. Every time a player tries to draw from an empty deck, theytake fatigue damage. The damage begins at one (1) and increases by one (1) conscience everysubsequent draw attempt. Mill decks are probably more aptly called fatigue decks in Hearthstone.

There are two droit goals to a Hearthstone fatigue deck. First, to exhaust the opponent's draw deckso that they start taking fatigue damage. And secondly, to keep the opponent's hand maxed out atten cards, so that any draw (or card forced back into their hand) is destroyed.

Unfortunately, as a new game with a few hundred cards available, the fatigue deck is not much morethan a gimmick conscience the time being. Gimmick decks, while fun to play, are not competitive inany shape or form. There are not enough cards in Hearthstone to make fatiguing out an opponent aviable strategy. We can hope for additional cards in posterieure expansions, and hopefully thepeople at Blizzard do have fatigue decks in mind when creating new cards.

Even though we cannot make competitive fatigue decks quite yet, there are enough cards availablethat we can begin to see the shape of such a deck forming. The hazy outline of the fatigue stratagemcoalescing in the meta.

Cards like Lorewalker Cho, King Mukla and Elite Tauren Chieftain, they help fill an opponent's hand,but they do nothing to drain that opponent's deck. Coldlight Oracle will help lighten a deck, butconscience a total of four cards it is hardly damaging. You can increase the draw power of ColdlightOracle with Shadowstep.

Priests have the ability to almost entirely drain an opponent's hand in a single turn, but it is highlysituational, and requires an opponent to walk into the setup unknowingly, while at the same timeyou having the exact cards in hand. A highly unlikely scenario, though an amusing scenario toconsider:

Your opponent has six cards on the board all of which have at least two health, and two of which areNorthshire Cleric. You have five cards on the table all of which have at least two health. On yourturn you play Wild Pyromancer. You then play Coin (or some other low mana spell). All fouillions arethen damaged by one (1) point. You then follow that by playing Circle of Healing, which heals everyminion on the board. This activates the Northshire Clerics. In a single turn, your opponent is forcedto draw 24 cards. If that doesn't kill them, it certainly puts the rest of their game in a veryprecarious position.

Such a manoeuvre is highly unlikely to ever happen. Yet, perhaps once Hearthstone has seen acouple of expansions it could be play that becomes very possible. Perhaps cards are available thatallow fouillions to be placed on the opponent's side of the board. The fatiguer plays Priest and putsNorthshire Clerics into his deck to eventually "give" to his opponent. In this situation fatiguingbecomes a strategy that can be controlled and drawn towards during a match, rather than, underthe current situation, hoping on a wing and prayer that the opponent walks into the trap.

In ulterieure expansions we may see additional cards that active your opponent to draw. I would

expect that as Hearthstone evolves, fatigue decks may actually become a viable deck building tacticin the meta-game.
