The Greater Essex County District School Board is proud to offer parents the opportunity to enrol their child in an Early French Immersion Program. French Immersion is designed for students whose first language is not French. The goals of the program are to enable students to become functionally bilingual, to instill an appreciation of French language and culture among students, and to promote lifelong language learning.

Students can begin the Early French Immersion Program in Junior Kindergarten, Senior Kindergarten , or the first few weeks of Grade 1. The program continues into high school where students achieve diploma requirements in French Immersion.

What is the parent’s role in French immersion?

Read and communicate with your child in their first language. Research shows that knowledge learned in a first language is transferred to a second language.

As well, have a positive attitude towards learning French as a second language. Your encouragement and commitment will contribute to your child’s success.

What does the French Immersion program look like?

Do students in French Immersion learn the same curriculum as students in an English program?

French Immersion students learn the same curriculum as that of students enrolled in an

English program. Only the language of instruction is different. As students in French

Immersion progress through the primary years, English is gradually introduced into their

program. Students’ literacy skills develop along with their growing acquisition of the

French language.

Must the parents be French speaking?

No. The French Immersion Program is a French as a Second Language program. No previous French background is necessary.

What about transportation?

Transportation to and from school is provided in accordance with The Greater Essex County District School Board’s policy.

Do French Immersion students receive support if they have special needs?

Yes. Students have access to all of the program supports that are available in the GECDSB

in order to receive an education that is tailored to their specific needs.

What are the benefits of learning in a French Immersion program?

Research has shown that learning in a French Immersion program increases: • first language skills • problem solving, reasoning skills and capacity for creative thinking • respect and understanding of other cultures • understanding of oneself and others • appreciation of the value of language and its functions • the ability to understand and communicate in French for life • opportunities for the future!
