How Dangerous Is It To Eat At Your Desk?
We’ve all been there. Rushing to work without having any breakfast and having to munch down some cereal over your keyboard.
Rushing to meet your deadline and chomping on lunch while typing away. Or being tempted by the smell of hot sausage rolls when your stomach starts churning at 4pm and you don’t feel that you can make it to the end of the day without eating one.
So what do you do? You eat at your desk. But did you know that your desk is harbouring 400 times more germs than a loo seat?
As delicious as that hot chicken baguette might be, you might want to try and resist eating it at your computer when you read this.
It turns out that all that food indulgence during office hours transforms your office into a hot spot for germs to live, spread and infect us with disgusting viruses and colds.
A recent US survey showed that almost a third of us eat breakfast at our desks when arriving at work, and over half eat lunch or snacks at their desks throughout the day.
All the while we drop crumbs and debris into our keyboard and all over our desks, and with that lovely warm office environment germs breed and spread like wildfire.
According to the same US study, almost three quarters of us only clean our desks monthly or less often – GROSS! Also, 20% of people have no idea whether the communal fridge at work is ever cleaned!
That is just sickening!
Now comes the disgusting bit – the average desk is home to over 400 times more bacteria than a lav seat.
So think about all of those lovely germs and bacteria from the fridge getting all over your food containers, then you happily walk it over to your desk, transferring the germs to your desk.
You touch handles and rails all day long picking up gross germs, and again, transfer them to your desk.
All day, you are putting germs on the desk and every day, you go home without so much as looking at a cloth.
How to keep your desk clean at work?
If you want to prevent illness and keep your desk clean, make sure that you regularly clean your keyboard by emptying all the bits out of it and giving it a good thorough clean.
You should also eat food away from your desk in the canteen or in a space dedicated to eating.
Wipe down your computer screen with screen wipes daily, and use antibacterial wipes for your desktop, desk phone, keyboard and any other items on your desk.
It can help to keep paperwork in trays or folders so that you don’t have bits of paper collecting dust and germs, too.

It is useful to have daily office cleaners to come and do the major tasks like keeping your kitchen tables, counters and fridge clean and will also tackle most of the desk cleaning duties that employees tend not to bother with.
