Building Better Support for Carers | The Adult Services Stakeholder Conference | 19 November 2013


What will we cover?

• We have 40 minutes to…

1. Listen to me talking for about 5 minutes to give an introduction and to talk about some difficult challenges in the future

• Please can you introduce yourself to other people on your table

2. Get together in small groups for about 25 minutes to talk about how better information and advice can improve lives

3. Think for about 10 minutes as a big group about what you have said and what happens after today’s Conference

Who am I?

• I am employed by London Borough of Bromley

• I am responsible for:

a) the Bromley MyLife website

b) looking at how we talk to and listen to ‘real people’ and other organisations

• I am a fan of working in a different way to give ‘real people’ a stronger voice, like

a) using ‘social media’

b) holding ‘talking events’

c) trying new things

What will we think about?

1. How do people currently find information?

2. What stops people finding and using information?

3. What things can we all do to help support people to find and use information?

The journey so far…

• Lots of changes in the last few years to increase the control that people have over their day-to-day lives……and to encourage people to have healthier lives

• A big increase in people using the Internet……and big changes in the way that they use it

• Big changes in the way people want to find and use information and advice

• A big change in the way that people want to live their lives and use (or not use) services

And, there are some difficult things coming too

• A big increase in the number of people who live in the borough……giving a big increase to the number of people needing to use services

• Less money and staff for the Council and health services to provide things for people

• Huge changes from the Government about – who can use services– how people can use services– the information that Councils must provide to people to help

them to increase the control that they have over their day-to-day lives

• Future changes in the way people use the Internet and find information

• put one of your stickers in the box for each way that you find information in the ‘MyWay’ corner

• write any other ideas or comments on the ‘post-it notes’ and put them in the ‘MyWay Idea Space’ in the corner

2. What things stop people from finding information? • write your ideas on the post-it notes and put them in the

‘HelpMe! Thoughts Space’ in the corner

3. What things can we all do to help support people to find information?

• write one thing that you can do to help people find information on the ‘MyHelp Idea’ sheet

• write any other ideas or comments that you have on the post-it notes and put them in the ‘MyHelp Thoughts Space’ in the corner
