How Can I Help? So many ways to support Chicago Duplicate Bridge and help everyone have a great time at the club! At a basic level, bridge requires us to spend 15 minutes at a time in close contact with each other. Excess scent, insufficient deodorant, and animal allergens create discomfort for some players. Please do what you can to make the club a comfortable and safe place for all. For more experienced players, consider playing in one of our mentor/mentee games. The next one is the evening of May 7 at 6:30. We always are looking for more mentors for these games. This is a great chance to “pay it forward”—help develop newer players. And it’s a fun evening of bridge, complemented by special desserts made by director Dave Schroeder. And don’t forget, The Longest Day is coming soon! See below for info on needed help and donations for our fundraiser for Alzheimer’s in June.

Save April 28: Two-for-One Special Day

On Sunday April 28th, CBD will have a Rank Advancement Party with a special lunch at noon,

to celebrate those who have advanced in rank since November. Please join us to celebrate the

success of our members. You should have received an email listing those members who have

advanced. If you believe you have advanced in rank and we missed your name, please

email chicagoduplicatebridge@gmail.com, so that we can include you.

Sunday April 28th will also feature the launch of a new plaque event, the CDB IMP Pairs

Championship (replacing the Mixed Pairs Championship). Almost all club pair events score

using Matchpoints, so this is a rare event where you are scored as a pair, but will be rewarded

for IMPs scoring. In IMP games, bidding and making games is far more important than the

overtricks that are the bread and butter of Matchpoints. (IMP scoring is explained in more

detail in the email sent out earlier this week.) As always, plaque recognition requires being a

paid-up CDB member by the end of the first round of the game. If there are enough interested

players there, we will have a separate 99er game.

Memorial Day This year Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 27. The club has many older players, which means that a number of our players die each year, and we encourage members to use the Memorial Day game to commemorate those we have lost. If someone you care about has died in the last year, please feel free to print out some memorial to display at the Memorial Day game.

The Longest Day at CDB—Play All Day!

On June 22nd Chicago Duplicate Bridge is participating in the ACBL's Longest Day, to raise

money to fight Alzheimer's Disease. We will be hosting 6 bridge session over the course of 24

hours. You can choose to play in only 1, in all 6 (some of us are crazy enough to want to try

this!), or any number in between. The tentative schedule of games and types includes:

• Midnight (as Friday the 21st changes to Saturday the 22nd): Zip Knockout; 2 hrs max (2 sections if enough 299ers attend)

• 9am: MP Pairs (2 sections if at least 2 tables in Open and 2 in 299er)

• Noon: IMP pairs game in regular slot (Open and 499er)

• 4pm: Individual (segmentation by strat)

• 8pm: Swiss Teams (separate section if at least 5 teams in Open and 3 teams in 199er)

• Midnight: Zip Knockout Refreshments/meals will be available for each event. More information about the unusual game types will be available as the date nears. Please consider providing food appropriate to the time of day/evening if you are able to.

In addition to the six bridge sessions, we will be holding various fundraisers including a silent

auction. That's another reason why we need your help. We need items to auction off for the

silent auction. For example, think about gift certificates for your favorite restaurant, hair salon,

bar, bakery, candy store, etc. If you're a regular customer somewhere, talk to the

manager. You'd be surprised at how willing they might be to donate a gift certificate. Do you

have theater, opera, or sports tickets you can't use? What about a weekend at your lake or

country home? Have some gifts you wanted to regift? Some bottles of wine or liquor you

aren't going to drink? Do you bake or make candy? Do you have a talent or skill you could

provide to someone via a gift certificate? We need all kinds of donations to include in the

silent auction. Please bring your donations to the bridge club or email David Schroeder

at dave8459@yahoo.com with a description of what you think you can donate. Donations may

be eligible for a tax deduction.

Venmo Is Here!

More and more members are now using Venmo at Chicago Duplicate Bridge as a cashless option to pay for game fees, memberships, lesson fees, and contributions. You will need to install the Venmo app on your phone and set up an account, linking it to a credit card or bank account, or go to http://venmo.com and set up an account there. You cannot use Venmo to pay the club until you have set up your account, know your password, and have linked a bank account to your Venmo.

The club's Venmo account is Judy Adler 6. Payments are made using the top-right button on iPhones ($ sign), and bottom-right blue button (with the $ sign and the pencil) for non-Apple devices. The director will confirm your payment on the club phone. Please contact ChicagoDuplicateBridge@gmail.com with any issues or concerns.

Power Up Your Bridge Game

Snowbirds: Now’s your chance to purchase the best new bridge book on

the market (not that we’re prejudiced). Eldad “Gino” Ginossar’s new

book, Power Up Your Bridge Game, is now available. This new work is a

compilation of a series of lessons, based on Gino’s years of expert

playing and teaching bridge. There are lessons that will be useful and

understood by advanced beginners as well as very advanced players. The

book was a joint venture between Gino and Chicago Duplicate Bridge,

and profits are being shared. Copies are available at the club. Thanks to

Gino for all his contributions.

Beginner, Intermediate/Novice News

Don’t be shy; don’t be afraid. Beginners are welcome at Chicago Duplicate Bridge. All games

are stratified and provide Masterpoints. High school students can play for $1.00. And we have

lessons at several levels; see below.

Lessons—We’ve Got Lessons!

Chicago Duplicate Bridge offers bridge lessons for

beginners, intermediate players, and advanced

players. Beginning Bridge classes are offered on

Monday and Wednesday evenings, taught by

Rosede Olson and Hazel Connor, respectively.

Teaching the Intermediate and Advanced classes

is Eldad “Gino” Ginossar. Gino is/has been Israeli

pairs champion, European team champion,

winner of the Moscow Cup, etc., etc. You get the

picture. They are all great teachers.

o $20 one-time for materials plus $25 per lesson

Opener’s Double-Jump to 3NT

This jump rebid does not show a balanced distribution. Rebid 2NT with 18-19 HCP and a balanced distribution. Open 2NT with 20-21 and a balanced distribution. This double-jump bid to 3NT indicates 6+ cards in the opening suit, with 18+ HCP. The opener usually shows a semi-balanced or a distributional “NT” hand, where a shortness is only possible (even likely) in responder’s bid suit. For example:

West (A)’s hand is too strong to rebid 3♣, which is an invitational nonforcing bid. With 18

HCP and an extra club, West (A) holds a game-forcing hand. West (A) cannot rebid 4♣. With all side suits stopped, 3NT appears to be a good contract. West (B)’s rebid of 3NT shows a 6-card heart suit with stoppers in the unbid suits, clubs and diamonds.

I love to play duplicate but don’t have a regular partner. Will CDB always provide a partner for me if I show up without one? The club has a general policy of providing partners where possible, so that out-of-town players know that they can show up and will have a game, people whose partner is out of town have an opportunity to play, or a last-minute emergency comes up. The ideal is to contact the game director ahead of time to request a partner on the day of the game. Our expectation is for you to do your best to organize a partner in advance and not rely on the club to provide one for you. We have instructed directors to send home players who abuse the partners they are paired with, refuse to play with partners offered to them, or regularly show up hoping to play with the director and this would create a half table.

Upcoming Tournaments

Tournament season is going great guns in May! More info on each of these tournaments can

be found on the ACBL web site. Consider taking a short trip for a change of scene!

In addition, Chicagoland is once again hosting one of the major international events in the

bridge calendar—the US Bridge Federation Team Trials in Schaumburg from May 10th. These

games determine the teams to represent the US in China later this year in the Bermuda Bowl,

the Venice Cup, and other major events. There are teams in the Open, Women's, Mixed, and

Seniors groups. This event will attract most of the top 100 players in the country. You may

enter a team (yes, really). You may also watch the top-notch bridge, either in person, or the

online vugraph at bridgebase.com. Or you might be able to find work as a vugraph operator if

you are highly proficient with bbo. All details can be found through this link:
