Try before you buy. The Gateway programme is also a great way to find
an apprentice.Your business takes on a secondary school student for work
experience one day per week. If they fit with your business they’re the perfect
choice for your next apprentice.
Prepare your businessApprentices need supervision, so you’ll need a qualified sta� member to work with
them. That sta� member needs one of the following qualifications (or equivalent):
• Hairdressers: New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Professional Stylist)
Level 4.
• Barbers: New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Barbering Level 4.
• Beauty therapists: National Certificate in Beauty Services
(Beautician) Level 4.
No qualification? No problemHITO o�er a programme that can convert industry experience
into a qualification called Qualification by Experience (QbyE).
