SEPTEMBER CLASSES & LAOS FUNDRAISING

Zoom Classes take place on Wed. Sep 23 @ 3.30 pm & Sep 30 at 4 pm Eastern Time.

Cost in September will be $20.00 each which is a MINIMUM DONATION and all money raised will go to buy water filters in Laos through the charity: Adopt A Village in Laos. THEY HAVE NO ADMINISTRATION FEES AND ALL FUNDS GO TO THE CAUSE.

Each water filter costs $125.00 CAD (roughly $100.00 USD). If you donate a water filter, you will receive a tax receipt and a picture of the family receiving the water filter with your name on it. You can even put a grandchild's picture on the filter if you wish. Below, take a look at some of the beautiful children of Laos in one of the very remote villages. Note the mountains in the background.

LAOS: A SAD BUT INTERESTING HISTORY

HELP US TO HELP THEM

Laos remains the most heavily bombed nation, per capita, in history. During the Vietnam War, (between 1964-1973), Laos was hit by an average of one B-52 bomb-load every eight minutes. More bombs were dropped on Laos during this ‘Secret War’ than those dropped during WWII. During the Vietnam war, it was discovered that the North Vietnamese bombs were being transported through Laos to South Vietnam through the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail, and therefore a bombing campaign was started to cut off the supply chain.

Page 4: HOW ALEX & I SPENT CANADA DAY EVENING - Barbara Seagram · 2020-07-03 · Barbara Seagram, 220 Lawrence Ave East Toronto ON M4N 1T2 Canada Canadians can pay by Paypal OR better still,

Laos farmers were no match to block entry of the bombs by land from North Vietnam, nor to stop the resulting bombing raids. During this secret war, there were no rules or laws, as there often are with war. This meant that nothing was considered untouchable including temples and hospitals. Laos lost 30% of its population. An estimated 30% of the cluster bombs that rained down on this country remain in the earth – unexploded – called bombies (see photo of the contents of one cluster bomb) continuing to cause a devastating impact, with casualties and injuries, a regular occurrence. Children find these and know they can sell the metal. Horrible accidents occur as a result. With such an intensive and lengthy air campaign, the bombing runs were so frequent that there was a shortage of targeting information. Air squadrons were forced to leave base without having any real targets, as they awaited further instruction when in the air. Many of the bombers never received final target information and were forced to drop their payloads at the last minute so they would have enough fuel to return safely. The result is that it will take hundreds of years to remove the UXO's (unexploded ordnance). Much of the potentially arable land is still littered with UXO's and farmers remain at serious risk when they cultivate their rice fields. With only 10 % of the land in Laos being arable, farmers travel great distances to get to their rice fields and often stay there for a month at a time. The countryside is very mountainous and when we travel to the villages, we are on trucks and tractors, trekking over rough terrain, and sometimes through small rivers. Laos is a landlocked country. It is a tough life for the villagers. Many villages have no water and the women often walk for miles each day to carry water to their homes. This is back-breaking. Steve Rutledge, CEO of Adopt A Village In Laos, builds dams and brings permanent water to remote villages. He also has supplied over 65 villages with water filters. On distribution day, he asks the villagers: "How many of you have suffered from diarrhea in the past two weeks?" Usually, every village hand goes up. Two months later, when he asks the same question, it is rare to see a hand go up. Imagine the difference this is making in the quality of life and their ability to be productive. Infant mortality rates have dropped significantly. Each year, the rural villages suffer from drought during the dry season and floods/landslides during the rainy season. With climate change, it is no longer uncommon to see a drought during the rainy season. Hoof and Mouth Disease is also common with the livestock, thereby further reducing income for the families. With very limited medical facilities, Covid and other diseases remain a constant threat to the livelihood of the villagers. Malaria and Dengue fever are constantly on the rise. Below are pictures of the bombing that took place...The Secret War, as it was called since Laos was NOT at war with anyone. A picture of an opened-up cluster bomb is below. The land is littered with these. Hidden for the most part and if someone starts to dig, there is an explosion.

ARTICLE ABOUT ALEX

The Fall Kibitzer magazine is out. There is an article about Alex. I have given a separate link for that in case you are interested in reading this. There is a picture of Alex at age 10 or so in Warsaw, Poland, where he starred in five movies as a young boy in Poland. See below!

THE KIBITZER MAGAZINE

The latest Kibitzer magazine is out. There is an interview of my husband, Alex, by Andy Stark. In case you have time to read this, click on link below.

The last link is a new format. Flip-it where you easily turn the pages. But the print is small. If you go to the bottom left hand corner of your screen while the magazine is open, you will see a tiny picture of a magnifying glass. Click on this and this will make it easier to read. BUT then top and bottom of page are hiding after magnification. Left click on each page (after magnifying) and hold down your mouse left click. Now you can drag the magazine page up and down to get a good look.

REMEMBER THESE TWO? SIMON & GARFUNKEL

In 1967, they performed live on stage in Fredericton, New Brunswick, where I was attending University and I have

loved them ever since. They wrote a song called "The 59th Street Bridge Song". Imagine that it has the name BRIDGE

in it! Yeah.

I begged our son, Chris to record my crazy version of revised words for this song and tried to play it in my Zoom lesson but I could not make it happen...so here it is as promised. You will hear our wonderful 2 year old and 4 year old girls playing in the background. Just for fun...to make you remember as you play..."Slow down, you play too fast!"

THE LIGHTNER SLAM DOUBLE

S 10 H 987 D QJ1098 C J974

NORTH A6543 J6 A32 KQ2 SOUTH 82 KQ1043 K64 A43

S KQJ97 H A52 D 75 C 1065

THE LIGHTNER SLAM DOUBLE The Lightner double is named after Theodore Lightner who invented it. The double of a slam contract, OR the double of a 3NT contract, if made by the partner of the player on lead, instructs his partner as to what to lead. The double actually asks for an unusual lead.

Page 16: HOW ALEX & I SPENT CANADA DAY EVENING - Barbara Seagram · 2020-07-03 · Barbara Seagram, 220 Lawrence Ave East Toronto ON M4N 1T2 Canada Canadians can pay by Paypal OR better still,

If the doubler had bid a suit against a slam, it would be usual for his partner to lead that suit. After the double occurs, then the double says: “Do NOT lead my suit.” That is what makes this a call for an unusual lead. If the doubler had bid a suit against 3NT however, the double calls for the lead of that suit. OR if the opening leader has bid a suit, the double by partner says “Lead your suit.” BUT against a slam, it says: “Do Not lead your suit or my suit.” Since EW had not bid a suit, then East is asking for the lead of dummy's first bid suit. Confused yet? When in doubt, the double calls for the lead of dummy’s first bid suit (NOT the trump suit). Let’s take a look at an example of how this may come up in real life: S W N E 1H P 1S P 1NT P 3NT Double P P P West would always plan to lead the top of his sequence: Diamond Queen but East’s double of 3NT commanded partner to make an unusual lead. When in doubt, partner is asked to lead dummy’s first bid suit. West leads the S 10. This is ducked in dummy and East MUST be sure to overtake that S 10, in case it is a singleton. Indeed, East KNOWS it is a singleton as South would not have rebid 1NT with a singleton Spade…yes, even though North bid the suit. This rebid of 1 NT guarantees 2 or 3 in partner’s suit. East continues leading Spades until the Spade Ace is played and later gets in with the Heart Ace, this scoring 4 Spade tricks plus the Ace of Hearts. Without the Lightner Double, Declarer would make 3NT since West would lead the Diamond Queen.

RESPONDER

Responder with 4 card suits bids them UP the ladder. e.g. AKxx Axxx Kxxx x 1C by partner, respond 1D, your cheapest four card suit on the bidding ladder. Now if opener bids 1H, you bid 4H. Ditto with if partner bids 1S next, you bid 4S. If however you have a very weak hand (6-9 points) then bypass the minor and bid the major. e.g. Axxx Xx Kxxxx Xx 1C by opener, respond 1S, even bypassing the 5 card minor. Because you are 6-9 and usually only get one bid. With 5-5 however, Responder always bids his highest-ranking suit first Axxxx AKxxx Xx Kx Partner opens 1C. You bid 1S. Partner now bids 2C, you bid 2H. This is forcing, as it is a new suit. Partner knows that you have five Spades and at least four Hearts. BECAUSE if you had 4 of each, you would bid them UP THE LADDER. When it is your turn to bid again, you bid you Hearts again and now partner knows that you have 5 of each (or possibly 6 Spades and 5 Hearts but that happens so rarely). Note that if you are overcalling with 5-5 (or 6-6) or making a transfer, or opening, you always name your higher ranking suit first. So we say…UP WITH FOUR, DOWN WITH MORE!!!

ANSWERS TO QUIZ # 20

People had so much trouble with this quiz that I am putting answers here to make sure everyone studies this.

Question 1. South S A1042 H 63 D KQ54 C Q32 Your partner (North) opens 1D. You bid 1S. Partner now bids 1NT. What do you (South) bid now? 1. Pass 2. 2NT 3. 3D 4. 2D If you had this hand and 6-10 points, certain in the knowledge that no game can exist, (since opener has promised 12-14 HCP exactly and precisely) you would pass now. With 11-12 HCP, you must make another bid in case there is game. So you invite game by bidding 2NT. If opener has a maximum, she will bid 3NT. With 12 or 13 HCP, she will just pass.

Question # 2 North S 764 H AQ42 D AQ8 C KQ10 You open 1NT. Partner (South) bids 2H (Transfer) and you bid 2S. South bids 3NT. What do you (North) bid now? 1. Pass 2. 4NT 3. 4S 4. 4H Partner says she has five cards in the Spade suit. You might have had only Spades 32. That is all you need to have to open 1NT. So partner , who only has FIVE Spades may not bid her suit again. She bids 3NT showing enough points for game (10 or ore HCP) and a five card Spade suit only. You, North, must now bid 4S because your side together has an eight-card fit in a major. It is safer to play a hand in a major than in NT and with an eight-card major fit, that is what you must do. Question # 3 South S A10965 H 76 D A984 C 97 You are South and partner (North) opens 1H. You bid 1S. Partner now bids 2C . What do you (South) bid now? 1. 2H 2. 2D 3. Pass 4. 2S When partner opens the bidding and you find yourself as Responder with 6-9 points, you are sad you even came out to play today. You are very low on the totem pole. You may bid only once unless PUSHED by partner. When Opener bids a new suit, THAT is a push. As Responder with only 6-9 points, you MUST choose one of her suits. I’ll say that again. You MUST choose one of her suits. Since you know that she has at least 5 Hearts and may only have four Clubs, you must choose Hearts. You bid 2H. This is called Simple preference. If you had three Clubs and only one Heart, you would choose one of her suits by PASSING 2C.

Question # 4. North S KJ873 H J52 D A64 C Q2 Your partner (South) opens the bidding with 1H. You bid 1S. South now bids 2C. What will you (North) bid now? 1. 2NT 2. 3NT 3. 2S 4. 4H 5. 3H See # 3. You have a few more points on this hand. You are Responder with 10-12 points. Partner is known to have five Hearts. You must choose one of her suits. IF you now bid 2H, then partner will expect you to have 6-9 points. So you must bid differently so she knows you have more points. Bid 3H. This is called JUMP Preference. She now knows that you have 10-12 points and 3 card support. Because if you had 10-12 points and 4 card support, you would have made a limit raise bid immediately: 1H -3H (Standard) OR 1H – 3D if playing Bergen Raises.
