2 2003-2004 Houston Rockets Preseason Guide

LESLIEALEXANDER

Owner

PurchasedRockets:

July 30, 1993

College:New York University '65

When Leslie Alexander purchased the Rockets on July30, 1993, he made it clear that he wanted the bestfranchise in professional sports — both on and off thecourt. His mission was simple: to win championships forHouston and to help Houstonians in need. He hassucceeded repeatedly on both fronts, but constantlysearches for ways to take his mission to a higher level.

“I’ve always believed that sports teams are in the uniqueposition to make a real difference in their communities,”Alexander said. “When I bought the Rockets, that was mydream. I hoped to make a difference for the people ofHouston, both emotionally and financially.”

Since 1993, Alexander has dedicated himself to buildingthe Rockets franchise in every area.

“I want to do the most we can every year to win thechampionship,” he said. “That’s always our goal, and ithas been thrilling to see what this team has accomplishedover the last ten years.”

Alexander has continually proven his commitment tosuccess. He has engineered numerous moves to enablethe Rockets to improve the team:

In 1995, Alexander orchestrated a deal with Portlandto bring Houston native Clyde Drexler to the Rockets. This trade served as a springboard to Houston’s second-consecutive championship just four months later.

In 1996, Alexander signed Hakeem Olajuwon to along-term contract extension.

In 1996, Alexander acquired NBA All-Star CharlesBarkley from Phoenix.

In 1997, Alexander gave a multi-year contractextension to Head Coach Rudy Tomjanovich.

In 1999, the Rockets traded with Chicago for six-timeNBA champion Scottie Pippen.

In 1999, Alexander acquired Steve Francis, givingHouston, at that time, its highest-drafted player sinceOlajuwon joined the team in 1984.

In 2002, Alexander and the Rockets made historywith the first overall pick of the 2002 NBA Draft byselecting Yao Ming, making him the first-ever playerfrom an international league to be drafted number one.

In 2003, Alexander hired Jeff Van Gundy as the 10thhead coach in franchise history. Van Gundy comes toHouston after posting a winning record in each of hisseven seasons with the New York Knicks.

Alexander spearheaded the team’s search for a newcoach this past offseason. Among the highly qualifiedcandidates interviewed, Alexander decided that VanGundy most possessed the personal qualities andcoaching experience to develop Houston’s talent andlead the Rockets to postseason success.

While Alexander’s teams have been most successful onthe basketball court, unique to the Rockets organizationis its off-the-court commitment to the community.Building a better quality of life for Houstonians is adriving force for Alexander and the Rockets. A decadeof active community involvement has resulted in over

$5 million indonations to localcharities andallowed theRockets to impacttens of thousandsof Houstonianseach year.

“It’s so importantto me that theHouston Rocketsfind a way to thankthe fans for theiro v e r w h e l m i n gdevotion to ourteam. One waywe try to do that isby reaching out to young people through our communityprograms and fundraising initiatives,” Alexander said.

In 1995, Alexander established the Clutch CityFoundation with the goal of providing help, hope andinspiration to those who might otherwise be forgotten.Through the Clutch City Foundation, the Rockets areinvolved in several community service and charityfundraising programs.

The Clutch City Foundation funds and operatescomprehensive programs benefiting thousands ofchildren each Rockets season. In 1998, the Rocketswere awarded the “Leadership Houston” Leadership inAction award for outstanding community service toeducation, one year after winning the same award foroutstanding community service to youth.

Alexander and the Rockets received the 1997 ProTeam Community Award, given by the World SportsHumanitarian Hall of Fame. This award recognizesone professional team each year that exemplifiescommunity service. In accepting the award, Alexandersaid, “The Rockets are honored to represent our greatfans in bringing this special recognition to ourcommunity. It is our privilege and responsibility to helpmake a difference in the lives of Houstonians in need.”

Through the Clutch City Foundation, the Rocketsorganization will continue to make a difference in thelives of Houstonians for years to come.

When the NBA Board of Governors decided to createthe Women’s National Basketball Association,Alexander saw an opportunity to bring a new andexciting brand of professional basketball to Houston.Houston was granted a franchise and Alexander, whoknew firsthand of the city’s love for professional basketball, immediately set out to build another champion. Aswith the Rockets, Alexander again had the magictouch. In the first four years of the WNBA, the HoustonComets claimed four consecutive leaguechampionships.
