TIPS AND TRICKS

• Consider getting a 1-bedroom and share with another CM. Suddenly an expensive $1,400 room becomes a more affordable $700 room.

• Look for apartment complexes that include some or all utilities.

• When purchasing Internet, consider getting Xfinity. This way you can use their hotspots for free all over the city/country. (In addition to your own secure network, each Xfinity router produces an unsecured "xfinitywifi" network that you can access at other coffee shops, houses, etc that use Xfinity)

• Network: Often people know people who are trying to rent out rooms.

• To stay up to date on the listings in the DMV area, download apps like Craigslist, StreetEasy, Trulia and Zillow. Often times the apps offer benefits to people who create an account, such as the ability to save your searches or keep track of your favorite listings, take advantage of this. • Never send money, your social security number or any

other personal information to strangers, no matter what they say.

• Don't sign any documents or turn over any cash until you do some of your own investigating first. Search the person's name and company with the word "fraud," "scam" and "lawsuit" to see if anything comes up.

• Consider getting a Realtor. A corps member in 2016 used a realtor to find herself a gigantic house in Ft. Totten. She split the 7 rooms with 7 people and their rent was around $500 or less. She used Jonathan Woolfolk at Carrington Real Estate 1-804-640-7752. • There were no extra fees for her: his commission came

from the rent that was already set by the landlord. However, you should double check with him to make sure there are no fees and don't sign anything without reading it thoroughly.

• Responding to dozens of listings can be exhausting. Draft a general email response that you can copy and paste, with minor tweaks, to each listing that interests you.

• Post on the incoming Corps Member Facebook group to find roommates.

• Inquire about City Year’s partnership with Summit Hills Apartments in Silver Spring, MD.
