Floors and access ways• Only keep frequently used

Materials storage• Store sheet materials in racks• Store round bar etc to prevent

rolling• Store small items in trays• Avoid storing materials:

– On top of shelf units– Underneath work benches– On window sills



Flammable liquid containers

• Store flammable liquids in metal, flame proof cabinets,– Including paints, oils in plastic containers,

aerosol packs of paint and degreaser

• Don’t store flammable liquid containers on benches, edge of shelves or where they can be punctured or heated



Rubbish and waste hazards

• Include• Metal Filings – cuts and eye injuries• Food scraps and wrappers – vermin

and disease• Oily rags – fire• Sharp metal – cuts to hands and fingers• Paper, cardboard, shavings - fire



Waste and rubbish disposal

• Clean bench tops and equipment• Metal waste into metal waste bins• Paper and cardboard into bin• Food scraps and wrappers into a bin with a lid

Problems:

• Everyone should be on the Common lookout for :

• Poor Flooring

• Unsuitable footwear

• Slippery surfaces

• Obstructions in walkways

• Inappropriate lighting or restricted vision

• Unnecessary haste.

• Bad housekeeping (cleanliness)

• Look out for hazards all around you

• Deal with the hazards in an appropriate manner

WET FLOOR



Poor Flooring:

• Whether you work in an office, factory or the Shop• floor, a major cause of slips and trips is poor flooring.

Look out for the following• Loose floorboards• Cracked floor surfaces or damaged / missing tiles etc.• Old linoleum and carpets, in poor condition• Loose and worn out mats• Accidental spills onto a good floor surface• Report any problems to an appropriate person



Footwear:

• Where the Risk Assessment identifies the risk, an employer may be required to provide staff with Protective Equipment. This could include footwear. Where this is NOT the case, avoid wearing footwear which increases your risk of slipping / tripping

• Open toed sandals• excessive high heeled shoes• smooth soled shoes



Tripping Hazards• Objects dropped or placed in the gangway

often go unnoticed and may cause a fall.• Implement effective cable management

systems• Keep passages clear• Do not obstruct ‘high risk’ places, i.e. stair

landings, outside office doors, changes in floor level, changes in direction etc.


• Undue Care:• rushing to get something done• forgetting to take due care• not paying attention • Stairs• Stair treads that are slippery, worn or

broken• Inadequate lighting• Missing / damaged fixtures• Obstruction of vision when ascending or

descending



Prevention and Health & Safety Management

• A good Health & Safety management system will:

• help in identifying problem areas,• help in deciding what to do,• impact on the actions taken• monitor the effectiveness of those decisions



A good management system will involve 4 stages

• PLANNING• ORGANISATION• CONTROL• MONITORING & REVIEWING



PLANNING

• Identify Key Areas of Risk• Set Goals for Improvement• Carefully select Equipment and

work practices which Prevent or Contain Slip or Trip hazards


ORGANISATION

• Staff need to be Involved and Committed to reducing risks

• Give people responsibilities to ensure that areas are kept safe

• Maintain a Record of who is responsible for which arrangements

• Make these details Clear to everyone



CONTROL• Check to ensure that practices are being carried out

correctly• Ensure a mechanism is in place by which problems

can be reported to the appropriate person• Keep records of cleaning and maintenance work etc.• Encourage good health and safety.



MONITOR & REVIEW• Re-examine your approach in the light of experience• Examine Accident Investigation / Inspection Reports• Ask yourself, can improvements be measured• Talk to Safety Reps. / Staff about Slips, Trips & Falls
