8 HOUSE AND HOME ISSUE NO. 10 - 2012
It’s that special time of year when—aside from the holidays—we take measure our lives, the year’s accomplishments and the goals that lie ahead. Whether it’s a New Year’s resolution or simply a new way of
living, the end of any year is a time for refl ection as well as looking ahead.I did plenty of refl ection in late November when our family from
Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas gathered in Natchitoches for the annual Festival of Lights, Thanksgiving and a celebration of my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. In the weeks leading up to this trip, my sisters and I had gathered hundreds of family photographs that were eventu-ally spun into a fantastic video to sequence the highlights of my parents’ marriage. From early times growing up in New Iberia to the college years in LSU’s married student housing and eventually the relocation to Texas, the birth of three daughters and later four granddaughters, the special pets and memorable vacations were all collected into a 20-minute photo montage. After a special anniversary dinner, we headed back to our bed and breakfast accommodations where the entire family huddled into one bedroom and presented the video to our parents. There was no lack of sentiment as we watched 50 years play out on the TV screen to tunes by Frank Sinatra, Kenny Rogers and others who represented the passing decades. While I was only a supporting cast member in the video, it was an opportunity to take stock of my own life as it unfolded inside of theirs.
Looking ahead, when I arrived back home to Baton Rouge after the long holiday weekend, I began the ominous task of packing up my home. (In an unexpected turn of events, an enthusiastic buyer approached me in October with plans for a quick purchase. After some initial anxiety over where I would live, I found peace in the opportunity to start a new chapter of my life and, more importantly, the enthusiasm to once again do something I love—buy and remodel a home).
Next year I’ll be living leaner in roughly half of the space that I’m leaving. But fi rst, I’ll lighten my load, giving away things I no longer need and storing the special artwork and furnishings that won’t fi t in the next house. It’s an adventure in my quest toward 100% homeownership and the freedoms that come along with it. So it seems I’ll backburner the BMW for the time being. Here’s hoping we all fi nd our equivalent joy in the coming year.
PS – After 15 years, this is my fi nal column to write for some time. I enthusiastically welcome interior designer Rachel Cannon Lewis as House & Home’s Contributing Editor in 2013!
The new status symbol of wealth is the paid off home, not the BMW. —Dave Ramsey

The home’s French entry doors and a pair of fl anking windows are decorated in a playful palette of bright green and traditional red with a mix of striped ribbon and large, brightly-colored snowfl akes.
With a foundation of garland, the selected accents are bold and simple in an effort to have them show well from the road. Woven mesh ribbon is punctuated with oversized snowfl akes and lime green berry picks. “I prefer to use a few large scale items that make a bigger impact rather than many small items,” says Johnston.

Each holiday season, Sarah and Shane Morrison of Baton Rouge enlist the services of Audra Johnston of The Finishing Touch Designs to decorate their home
which features a stately 12-foot entry door
houseandhomemagazine.net 19
Johnston decorated this spirited entryway by first spreading grapevine around the door, then layering the green mesh ribbon and white lights. Finally, a bold mix of curly picks and ornaments add the final touches. For the side gas lanterns, greenery was substituted for the grapevine as a basis for the same bright color selections. “Many people try to add bows to lanterns without greenery behind it,” says Johnston. “But the greenery is the anchor that keeps it all together.”
Greeting visitors and passersby is the street-side mailbox that carries out the consistent color scheme of whimsical bright green and red.
Above: Oversized ornaments found by the homeowner are used to accent the entry, along with pre-lit decorative gift packages in small, medium and large sizes. “At night, it is so great at night to see the light they create around the doorway and on top of the side urns,” says Johnston. “I really like to use over-scaled items to make a big visual impact from the road.”

This page: In this small dining area, metallic gold and silver mesh ribbon was used to encircle the chair backs. The dining table and adjacent side
table are dotted with a mix of mercury glass candle holders and spheres that reflect light and
add colorless sparkle that suits any décor.
Facing page: One of two decorated Christmas trees includes a mix of silver and gold ornaments with touches of red. Silvery-gold mesh encircles the tree for all-important texture. For a touch of whimsy, gold birds are placed sporadically throughout the tree and gifts are wrapped in metallic silver paper with gold bows in keeping with the simplicity of the palette.
22 HOUSE and HOmE Issue No. 10 - 2012
For the holiday season, traditional artwork on the wall is replaced with metallic gold angels. A red accent pillow with a three-dimensional poinsettia adds a touch of texture. A custom arrangement pulls together all aspects of the room, incorporating sprayed pine cones, golden ornaments and touches of red.
