e can’t say it enough – thank you! Your passion and leadership are evident all across this great river valley. And your enthusiasm is contagious. Land

conservation leaders throughout the Litchfi eld Hills are collaborating to build the fi nancial power needed to protect our remaining forests and habitats. Town leaders are teaming up with stream ecologists to protect our most precious cold water streams. Students and volunteers are planting rain gardens and buffers to restore clean water.

Yes, we do face unprecedented environmental threats. Changing climate conditions push habitats northward and threaten our precious and fi nite supplies of clean water. We spent a good part of the year examining new ways to tackle these issues. Our new strategic plan challenges us to share the urgency of our watershed’s story and attract the very best human and fi nancial resources to our cause.

The decisions we make in the next ten years will profoundly impact the nature and health of the Housatonic Watershed. You balance the odds. You make success possible. Imagine where this valley would be without you. Imagine what dreams we will achieve together.

On behalf of the rest of the HVA team, thank you!

“I especially appreciate the importance of HVA and its many POSITIVE accomplishments when I think about the negative impacts that would have occurred without its help.”

— Dave Dolinsky

“Thank YOU for the opportunity and privilege of participating in the river cleanup. It was such a great feeling to IMPROVE the environment to make this Earth a healthier and more beautiful place. This means so much to me.”

— Kathy Stanley

“... a great feeling to IMPROVE ...”

“... many POSITIVE accomplishments ...”

You restore trout streamsFor more than two decades, trout gathered at the mouth of Cornwall’s Furnace Brook. Year after year they sought relief on hot summer days as the brook’s cooler waters spilled into the warm Housatonic River. In the early fall, they struggled with little success to migrate upstream to spawn.

Then one day last September, with the brook’s cool waters rushing through fi sh ladder baffl es installed moments earlier, the fi rst trout in 20 years made its way into Furnace Brook and upstream to spawn. It’s a rescue story written by many, including the adjacent landowner, Natural Resource Damages Fund, Inland Fisheries Division of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Housatonic Fly Fishermen’s Association, Princeton Hydro, LLC – and YOU!

You also: Find barriers to water fl ow and fi sh and

wildlife movement at culverts carrying streams under our roads. Interns and river technicians inventoried 617 culverts – 488 in northwest Conn, 39 in N.Y. and 90 in Seymour, Conn. More than half are harming stream health!

Launch a project to save the Still River with town leaders and local river groups in Bethel, Brookfi eld, Danbury, New Fairfi eld New Milford and Ridgefi eld.

Restore Seven Wells Brook in Dover, N.Y. and sections of the Ten Mile River by planting hundreds of shoreline trees and shrubs with

Dover High students and volunteers. Improve Webatuck Creek in downtown

Millerton with a rain garden that buffers the creek from incoming polluted runoff.

Study conditions along the Housatonic River in Lenox, Lee, Stockbridge, Great Barrington, and Sheffi eld, as well as on the East, West and Southwest Branches, Hop Brook and the Williams and Green rivers – see results at hvatoday.org!

Meet with community leaders in Amenia, Dover, Northeast and Pawling N.Y. to collaborate on protecting the Ten Mile River – Dover and Northeast are leading the way!

By year’s end, we were organizing the next Ten Mile Watershed Roundtable for town leaders; prioritizing culvert replacement projects in northwest Connecticut; planning a new wetland buffer for Town Hall in Amenia; and developing new regional protection plans across the entire Housatonic Watershed.

Jan’s dream come true – Whales Tails Farm in Sharon, Connecticut.

“I would walk my dog on a bridle trail through the woods to a big meadow in Darien where I would often see deer, rabbits and foxes. One time, a fox was trotting close behind a deer waiting for mice to be roused from the ground so he could have lunch! In the 1960’s, Darien built a country club turning the meadow into a golf course, with a clubhouse and pool. My heart was broken. There was no place for the animals to go. So I had a dream of SAVING a fox habitat in Connecticut. We met Lynn and realized that HVA would be the perfect organization to make this dream come true and we did at Whales Tails on the Housatonic River.”

You protect spectacular riverfronts …… keeping abreast of proposed development projects and leading a collaborative of land trust partners across the Litchfi eld Hills takes persistence. Because of you, we stay the course.

You make it possible to: Create a riverfront mapping tool to locate

habitat and conservation land for land trusts and land owners. This year we mapped the Ten Mile and Aspetuck watersheds, and tested the model in Kent, too.

Review the proposed Silo Ridge Golf Club and its 250 proposed residences in Amenia, N.Y., making the case for major plan improvements to protect fragile resources.

Review and strongly oppose a proposed construction materials crushing and storage facility near fragile wetlands and within the fl oodplain of the Still River in New Milford. The application was withdrawn.

Achieve accreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission! We’re proud to share this distinction with seven Greenprint land trusts (14 in total across Connecticut).

Greenprinting the Litchfi eld HillsThis year you enabled the Litchfi eld Hills Greenprint Collaborative members to gain

access to funds that will assist with land protection transaction costs – often the only road block to completing conservation projects! Now, thanks to a grant of $100,000 from the Jesse B. Cox Charitable Fund (administered by HVA with guidance from the Greenprint Collaborative), land trusts and landowners can move full steam ahead.

And you also helped: Attract $200,000 from an anonymous

Greenprint donor to help our partner Cornwall Conservation Trust purchase Trinity Forest in West Cornwall – more than 300 acres upslope from the Housatonic River.

Work with Kent, Roxbury and Sharon to update land parcel data, and maintain an up-to-date, comprehensive database of protected land across Litchfi eld County.

At year’s end, we were scouting the Housatonic River corridor for conservation and river access opportunities; working with Litchfi eld Hills Greenprint partners on the next phase of conservation projects for state and federal funding; and collaborating on building new private funds to save our most precious places before it is too late.

more learned how to be RiverSmart – around their homes and communities – in 24 towns throughout the Naugatuck, Pomperaug and Aspetuck valleys.

You also make it possible to: Host Still River Day for more than 100 students in Danbury who studied aquatic life, learned

about water quality and habitat, identifi ed aquatic insects, learned how stormwater pollutes rivers and about invasive plants – and were delighted to see fi sh, ducks, deer, muskrats and birds along the Greenway.

Expand the Naugatuck River website with additional recreational and river resource information – visit www.naugatuckriver.org.

Partner with the Torrington Conservation Commission and Torrington Trails Network to advance the Naugatuck Valley National Heritage Area project.

Create new paddling access site plans for Pittsfi eld, Stockbridge, West Cornwall and Kent – so far!

At year’s end, we were exploring new ideas to strategically connect teachers across the Housatonic Watershed, completing education work with youngsters and Trout Unlimited on the Salmon Kill in Salisbury, and planning new outreach programs to engage more people in 2016!

You inspire a life-long love of nature!

“How wonderful to fi nally be cruising down the Housatonic in a canoe – something I’ve always wanted to do but didn’t dare try on my own. What a feeling! I heard Prospero cry from the bridge ‘Go, make thyself like to a nymph

of the sea; be subject to no sight but mine; Invisible to every eyeball else...’” — Leslie Middlebrook Moore

Leslie joined hundreds of kids of all ages who danced, laughed, paddled and celebrated the Housatonic River during HVA’s RiverFest – part of Cornwall’s 275th anniversary party in early August. Connecting people to nature – that’s what you do!

This year, more than 500 students across the Berk-shires took part in 33 water programs, learning about storm drain pollution and how to keep our water clean – and having fun! Hundreds of adults re-discovered their love for nature, too, when they joined us on paddling trips, cleanups, river assessments and riverbank plantings. And scores

WITH OUR THANKS TO YOU!

“I loved my time at HVA as a River Steward this summer doing fi eld work, watershed planning, macroinvertebrate sampling, GIS mapping, web design, buffer restoration and so much more. Believe it or not, I’m coming back for more this fall!”

— Savannah Judge

“As an avid hiker and rock climber I’ve discovered the rare wildness in my back yard. As a musician, the Housatonic River and its rich local history provide me with a wealth of inspiration for songwriting. I am happy to be home here and a part of the HVA team.”
