Clinic LeadershipMark Ladner, MD
Dr. Ladner is the Director of Outpatient Psychiatry at UMMC. He completed medical school and psychiatric residency at UMMC. Dr. Ladner is a board certified psychiatrist with 20 years of clinical experience practicing psychiatry in Mississippi.
Lindsay Avent, MS, LPC
Ms. Avent is the manager of the Behavioral Health Specialty Clinic. She received her bachelor’s in psychology and master’s in community counseling at Mississippi State University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor. Ms. Avent has served as the clinic manager for nine years and has worked in the mental health field for 11 years.

Who We Are The Behavioral Health Specialty Clinic (BHSC) is located at the Jackson Medical Mall. The BHSC is the primary ambulatory service location for the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior. We provide comprehensive evaluation and behavioral interventions using a collaborative interdisciplinary model. Our team-based approach includes trainees such as medical students and psychiatry residents who provide care under the direct supervision of our licensed clinical faculty.
Services Include:• Medication management

• Group therapy
• Social work services
The mission of the Behavioral Health Specialty Clinic is to provide services in a caring and respectful atmosphere by a team of dedicated and skilled providers who are committed to improving the mental health of the citizens of Mississippi.
SpecialtiesMood and Anxiety
• Assessments and treatments for mood disorders such as bipolar, major depression, and persistent depression disorders, as well as anxiety disorders such as post-traumatic stress, obsessive compulsive, panic, social, anxiety, and generalized anxiety disorders
Neurocognitive Disorders• Treatment for memory disorders as well
as psychiatric disorders related to stroke, traumatic brain injury, Tourette’s syndrome and seizure disorders
• Treatment for developmental disabilities such as autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and chronic headache accompanied by psychiatric symptoms
Psychotic Disorders• Treatment for severe and chronic mental
illnesses such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and delusional disorder
Child and Adolescent Care• Assessment and treatment for minors 6-17
years old
• Typical problems include obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), behavioral disturbances, and a variety of mood and anxiety disorders
Substance Use• Assessment of substance use disorders and
treatments including psychosocial intervention and medication
LGBTQ Care• High-quality mental health care for those in the
LGBTQ community in an affirming, supportive treatment environment that is sensitive to their unique challenges and needs
Integrative Health• Patient-centered care that enhances health,
healing, wellness, and quality of life
• Utilizes an interdisciplinary, team-based model to develop comprehensive treatment plans that emphasize both mental and physical health to facilitate each person’s natural capacity for health and healing
General Mental Health Conditions• An entry point into care for those whose
mental health condition has not yet been diagnosed or whose condition does not fit into one of our other specialties
