Transcript of Hour of Code at BES 2014
An Hour of CodePresented by Marjorie Sample
● An Hour of Code is a week-long event that takes place in December.
● The ideal setting is a computer lab but they also have “unplugged” lessons for schools where computers aren’t available.
● During the week, each class spends one hour learning how to code.
What is “An Hour of Code?”
● For those of you not familiar with “coding” it’s basically the language that your computer speaks.
● Just like we say “hello” and “goodbye”, our technology has a language of it’s own.
● If you have ever played “Candy Crush” or used “Facebook” then you have used a program created with codes.
Codes? Coding? WHAT?
● Did you know by the year 2020, there will 1 million jobs in computer programming that are unfulfilled?
● Few students are majoring in computer programing and very few are girls. But we have the power to change that.
Why should my class participate?
Anybody!● Children as young as 5 can be successful
with coding!
● Last year, all 700+ students at Bunn Elementary School participated in “An Hour of Code.” We had a BLAST!!
Who can code?
BES Hour of Code 2013
This year is going to be even better! WHY?Bunn Elementary is pairing up with Edward
Best Elementary to reach out to over 1200 students!
Our hope is that students will major in computer programming when they go to college.
Think about the difference we can make!

Questions
The reason I’m so passionate about coding: I began coding in eighth grade, back when the internet was relatively new and the world wide web was just a dial up connection away. Each day, I would teach myself new codes and I began to connect with other people from all around the world. Coding gave me the motivation I needed to get through school and get into college. Flash forward to 2013: I watched my students share excitement and passion as they too discovered the joy of coding. Some of my students who hadn't felt success in their academics excelled when it came to coding. Others discovered their leadership potential as they taught and assisted with the lower grades. To be honest, it was one of my favorite weeks out of the school year. I got to watch our students and faculty come together as one, as we dove into the wonderful world of coding!
Final thoughts...a story of my own:
