AbstractThe foundation of leadership starts with identifying a leaders own personal mission, vision, values and purpose. Each statement consists of the individual’s beliefs, motivations, action plan and long-term goals. As a leader, each person has the opportunity to, not only influence followers, but also influence peers, and managers. The terms used for these leadership methods are leading-up, leading-across, and leading-down. Below I will go over my leadership statements and explain how I will accomplish leading 360-degrees based on my statements.
My MissionMy mission is to come to work each day with a positive attitude, to perform my duties to the best of my abilities, to pay attention to all details of the job, to support our customers will the highest professionalism, and to promote a positive atmosphere within my team.
My VisionIn the next five years, I see myself in a leadership position at my Internet Data Center. I will achieve this position through my continued support of my fellow teammates and by proving to management that I have the skills and commitment to lead. I will prove myself in the next five years by continuing to demonstrate that I can influence and motivate my team members and help them grow in their positions.
My ValuesI believe in trust, commitment, openness, accountability, respect, honesty, transparency, and professional communication. As a leader, I believe these values will help govern my actions throughout any situation.
My PurposeMy purpose for being employed as an IT Technician at CenturyLink is to support external and internal customers in the day to day operations of their businesses. Through professional support, I can resolve any issues they have within a timely manner to limit the risk of a long term outage or loss of service.
In light of your Leadership Development Goals and as a potential 360-degree leader, how could you use your Values and Purpose to Lead-Up?
In light of my leadership development goals and as a potential 360-degree leader, I will use my values and purpose as a way to ground and lead myself. At my current employer, I take pride in my work and ensure I have open communication with my peers and other departments. It has helped me develop relationships with managers and leaders in other division who come to me for advise and my opinion for new processes or installations. Not only does this make me valuable in the organization, it also takes some burden off my current manager.
In light of your Leadership Development Goals and as a potential 360-degree leader, how could you use your Mission to Lead-Across?
In light of my leadership development goals and as a potential 360-degree leader, I will use my mission to lead-across by coming into the office each day with a positive attitude and by doing my job to the best of my abilities. If I come in each day caring about my position and helping others with theirs, I will not only succeed in leading across, I will be helping my peers become potential leaders as well. If a peer or customer is also being negative, I can help to redirect the negative energy by helping with whatever issue they’re having with a positive attitude.
In light of your Leadership Development Goals and as a potential 360-degree leader, how could you use your Vision to Lead-Down?
In light of my leadership development goals and as a potential 360-degree leader, I will use my vision to lead-down by getting to know each individual I work with over the years to come. Once I get to know them better, I can understand their strengths and weaknesses on the job. Once I understand their strengths and weaknesses, I can help their strengths get even stronger and turn their weaknesses into strengths. If I can help them to succeed, they will look to me as a leader, mentor and roll model. As that leader, I need to remain consistent in everything I do on the job in order to establish a baseline of stability for everyone else.
