Hotspots, Autumn 2013
Dear Holstein Enthusiast,
We read it everywhere, agriculture is booming!
In the Netherlands it is agriculture that is the
strongest engine pulling our country out o this
economic crisis. It is a big compliment or so
many amilies who have worked generation
afer generation, day afer day. Tese peopledid not cause the crisis and nobody has asked
them to work harder because we are in this
predicament. No doubt, there will be other
people who will claim this success, while we
understand the truth about the people who got
us out o this crisis. Farmers are resilient,
dedicated and work hard every day to do the
best they can, caring or their land and
animals with respect and keeping a clear eye
or the uture. We eel ortunate to be in this
circle o armers and agriculturalists.
Tis issue o Hotspots will bring you reports on
two o the most successul cow amilies the
world has known. Sunnylodge Prelude Spottie
is a amily that has proven itsel on both sides
o the ocean and in the emale and male line.
Te other, the Savage-Leigh Bellwood Lindas
are not yet as wide-spread but proven to be a
true magnet or cow lovers rom all over the
globe over the last two decades. A amily that
is on top o the genomic rankings as well as a
amily that can perorm at the worlds highest
show level. Fortunately or breeders the world
has so many differences in breeding goalsbased on different things such as environ-
ments, housing systems, milk actory payment
systems and others. Holsteins are allowing
countless opportunities or breeders to serve
commercial dairymen around the world and
help them make money under their own
conditions, so they can serve the economy in
their neighborhood and country. Te
worldwide need or more ood should
encourage breeders to keep aiming or the best
and get the most rom their beloved Holsteins.
We hope this edition will inspire you to aim or
the best Holsteins have to offer.
Best regards, Te Hotspots-team

There are not many cow families as consistent as theLindas. Everybody who milks a Linda or milked a Linda inthe past is amazed by the great dairy frames, quality ud-ders and silky black appearance. But besides that thecow family is also able to deliver high index figures andgenerate top sellers at sales worldwide.
HistoryTe maternal line o the Savage-Leigh Bellwood Linda amily has
been present at Savage-Leigh Farm in Maryland or a very long time.
In act, longer than Savage-Leigh breeder Chip Savage can remember.
However, their career in the spotlight really kicked off with Bellwood
Linda. When the dam o Linda, Savage-Leigh Star Linda VG-87-USA,
had to be mated, breeder Chip Savage was interested in using one o
the higher index sires. Chip explains, At that time people were
searching or high index cows and Bellwood was one o the high PI
sires and seemed to sire cows with good rames. I thought that this
would be a good mating on the Blackstar and they could support Bell-
wood with their great udders, which has always been one o the stron-
gest points o this cow amily. So Chip bought five units o Bellwood
to make the mating, he used two units to breed the Blackstar and the
other three remained in the tank until Linda was milking.
As a young cal I liked Linda but she was a bit too strong to show and
her index was not high enough to generate a lot o interest, according
to Chip. However, as soon as Linda reshened, in combination with an
increasing index and placing third in the junior two-year-old class at
Louisville, the interest started to grow. Afer she calved again as a
three-year-old and was nominated All-American, the interest in Lin-
da became overwhelming, Sire analysts and breeders rom all over
the world were interested in buying something rom Linda.
Early OffspringWhen interest in Linda peaked, Chip was already milking her first
daughters and in total Linda would have 30 Very Good or Excellent
daughter in the U.S. Chip states, It was a really exciting time or me,
I was able to sell many embryos and her offspring topped at many
sales.
Dixie-Lee Aaron sired the early popular daughters o Linda. Savage-
Leigh Lottery EX-91-USA was the highest classified Aaron daughter
o Linda and had a son by Hidden-View Best who did really well in
Japan, an-Rok Darvish. Nowadays, he has almost 1800 daughters in
his proo. Another son by Outside, Savage-Leigh Lucius, is owned by
Select and has over 4500 daughters in his proo. A ull sister to Lucius,
Savage-Leigh Lauren scored EX-91-USA. From another Aaron sister,
Savage-Leigh Aaron Linny VG-88-USA, Select Sires tested a Cham-
pion son, Savage-Leigh Limelight, and he was popular as a proven
bull, siring more than 3000 daughters. Limelight also has three ull
sisters classified o which two are Excellent. Te VG-86-USA Cham-
pion daughter o Linny has an EX-92-USA Potter daughter, Cedar-
Haven Potter Lizza EX-92-USA GMD DOM, owned by Tomas
Priest, Pa.
The Durham MatingTe most successul mating on Linda was to Regancrest Elton Dur-ham. Chip made the decision to mate Linda to Durham because at the
time he was one o the hottest sires in the industry. Durham came
rom a great cow amily and had a great score or udders, one o the
trademarks o the Lindas. Linda had a great udder, but her sire Bell-
wood wasnt known or great udders so in order to embed the great
udder into the cow amily I decided to use Durham, explains Chip.
And he wouldnt regret this decision. Te Durham mating resulted in
two antastic daughters Petinesca-I Durham Ladina VG-89-2YR-
CAN and Savage-Leigh Licorice EX-92-USA.
LadinaEven though she spent her career in the shadow o her amous ull
sister Licorice, Ladina lef quite an impact on the breed on the emale
and male side. Her sons Lobo (s. Goldwyn) and Lander (s. Shottle)
returned to the active line-up afer testing. Ladner scores nowadays a
solid +2223 GLPI with a +9 or Conormation. His Goldwyn brother
Lobo scores +2399 GLPI and is popular in Europe due to his high
components and his scores or teat placement especially with dairy
armers milking using an automatic milking system.
Ladina also has an EX-90-USA ribute daughter and a VG-85-USA
Goldwyn daughter owned by om Mercuro, Md. and Tomas Priest.
However, her most popular daughter is Calbrett Shottle Lucy EX-94-USA, owned by odd Whittier, Mass. and Cybil Fisher, Wis. Lucy has
been extremely successul or this partnership, especially the mating

Consistent True Breeding
Tom Mercuro, Mercuro FarmsI never worked with a cow family from which I got so many good
calves and cows, they all have that great open dairy frame and beau-
tiful udders, that milk really well. This family is extremely consistent.

with Mac. Tis mating resulted in Whittier-CF Mac Lucina VG-88-
USA, the ormer No. 4 GPI heier in the world who sold or $88,000
to Lookout Holsteins, Quebec and Ricardo Pesce, Argentina. Lucina
has sons by Atwood at Semex (Lookout P Last Chance) and Interna-
tional Protein Sires (Lookout Pesce Atw Lets Go). Both sires receive
great interest due to their high type index. Other ull sisters o Lucina
were successul in Europe or De Oosterho Holsteins, Netherlands
(Mac Lucinda VG-85-NL) and Hood Holsteins in Denmark (Hood
Mac Lucy VG-89-DK). Golden Oaks Farms owns a VG-88-2YR-USA
Atwood daughter o Shottle Lucy, while an EX-93-USA Goldwyn
daughter is still owned by the Whittier Farms and Cybil Fisher part-
nership. Tis Goldwyn daughter has an interesting Dorcy daughter at
LIM Holsteins in France who scores GPI+2065 and +2.63 or ype.
Todd Whittier, Whittier FarmsTey are strong wide cattle that take care o
themselves and are very aggressive. Te udderson the whole amily have been super.
A different line rom the Morty daughter o Durham Ladina is doing
a great job in Italy, via daughters o Bolton and Man-O-Man. All.Nure
Supersire (925) was one o the highest new tested European calves in
September on the Canadian GLPI system scoring GPA-LPI+3192.
LicoriceTe most popular and well-known daughter o Linda is the great Dur-
ham, Savage-Leigh Licorice EX-92-USA. Licorice was special rom
the start, states Chip Savage, When she was only three months old I
got the first offer to sell but she was special with great show potential
so I decided to keep her. And Licorice didnt disappoint, going on to
become a great show cow and also a phenomenal brood cow. Afer
Licorice was named reserve and intermediate champion at the New
York Spring Show in 2004 behind Hillcrof Melanie Leader, she came
back in 2006 and became senior and grand champion deeating the
champion rom World Dairy Expo six months earlier. I have many
great memories about this cow amily, but Licorice winning the grand
champion title at such a prestigious show is my greatest, says Chip
without any hesitation. Licorice was HHM All-American Five-Year-
Old 2006 and has been several times nominated All-American Pro-
duce o Dam (2012, 2011 and 2007).
Beyond her achievements in the show ring, Licorices biggest success
may be her achievements as a brood cow. Te index o Licorice ol-lowed a similar pattern to her dam, starting not very high according
to Chip but increasing on every run, which resulted in a high demand
or embryos. For this reason, Licorice only calved two times and had
a long career as an embryo donor being flushed to a wide range o
bulls like: oystory, alent, Champion, Allen, Marion, itanic, Gold-
wyn and Encore. Tis amily proved to be highly consistent, deliver-
ing great results rom every mating. And because the list o great
daughters (Licorice has 34 Very Good or Excellent daughters in the
USA alone) is so long we are only able to write down the highlights.
One o the earliest daughters o Licorice was Savage-Leigh itanic
Lexey EX-90-USA. Lexey sold to Sandy-Valley Farms where she was
flushed several times. Te most successul flush was probably to the
French Jocko son, Stol Joc. From this flush Jan van den Oord o Drak-
kar Holsteins in France bought our embryos resulting in our heier
calves.
Jan van den Oord, DrakkarTey were not typical Stol Jocs, they were much
more stylish, open-rib with great dairy rames andthe ones that calved here had outstanding udders. For me these are the strengths o the cow amily.
Jan sold his first Stol Joc trough the Eurogenes Online Heier Sale or
13,000 to Bouw Holsteins in the Netherlands. Tis heier, DKR San-
dy-Valley Lexus VG-85-NL, proved hersel as a valuable investment.
She is the dam o Bouw Mogul Lione GPI+2395 +3.13 and Bouw
Shamrock Lizette GPI+2275 +2.91. Lizette is the ormer No. 1
GPI heier in Europe and sold through the Holland Masters Sale
2012 or 65,000 to R Genetics (UK) Diamond Genetics and Hul-
Stein (NL). Another Stol Joc, DKR Licorice VG-86-NL, sold through
the Vente Drakkar in 2011 to B. Bredek o Westerwolda Holsteins
(NL) and was first in her class at the HHH-Show as a two-year-old. A
third ull sister, DKR Linda, sold at the Vente Drakkar Edition o 2013
to Johan Zwijnenberg. Linda is also a beautiul cow and will be shown
at the SPACE show in France. Johan clipped and showed Linda at a
show in Normandy and he became so excited about her potential that
he decided to buy her. Te ourth ull sister still remains at Drakkar
Holsteins where she has a daughter by Bradnick.
Another well-known daughter o Licorice, Savage-Leigh Lavish EX-
94-USA (s. alent) has an Advent son, Lavor, at St. Jacobs ABC and
several excellent daughters by Shottle and Jasper. However, the most
well-known daughter o Licorice is arguably Savage-Leigh Allen Leo-
na EX-96-USA. Te list o show results on this Allen daughter is long
and impressive, winning several titles at the Maryland State Fair,
Maryland Spring Show and Eastern Fall National. Leona was also sec-ond 125,000 lb. cow at World Dairy Expo 2012 and will show again on
the colored shavings this year. Leona has several nice daughters by

jestic Holsteins rom the UK, and has sons
by Million and Planet at Genus/ABS. Te
ull sister to Leona, Savage-Leigh Leola
also has several great daughters including
an EX-90-USA GPI+2029 Shottle daugh-
ter owned by Mercuro and Priest.
Te most successul mating on Licorice
was Goldwyn resulting in multiple high
scoring daughters. wo Goldwyn daugh-
ters who are still at Savage-Leigh, continue
to turn heads, Savage-Leigh Gold Lona
EX-92-USA and Savage-Leigh Gold Linda
EX-91-USA. Savage-Leigh Gold Lona was
recently crowned senior and grand cham-
pion at the Maryland State Fair and will
show at World Dairy Expo this year. Lona
has our Alexander daughters in Australia
who are owned by Eclipse Holsteins and
erry out, Cowarol Holsteins. One was
lost during an unortunate accident but the
other three continue to leave their mark.
Te highest scoring is Cowarol Eclipse
Alex Licorice VG-87-2YR. She currently
produces 35kg a day with 5%F and 3.6%P. Te partnership also owns
a VG-86-AUS Canyon-Breeze Allen daughter o Gold Linda.
Terry Tout, Cowarol Holsteins"We bought into the Savage-Leigh amily becauseo the outstanding show results o their DurhamLicorice granddam and the profile the amily wasbuilding. Te amily's strong points in our opin-
ion would be the style o the cows, their greatudder attachment and lovely temperament."
Chip mentions, I think that the lines o Lona, Liza and Leona will be
the amily lines that keep developing towards the uture.
Another Goldwyn daughter is owned by Morsan Farms, Savage-Leigh
Gold Lyra. Lyra has an Afershock daughter, Nobold Afershock Lyra,
who won her class at the UK Dairy Expo 2012 and is owned by Nobold
Holsteins. Te highest genomically tested daughter o Licorice is her
Super daughter, Savage-Leigh Super Spot VG-88-2YR-USA and scores
GPI+1952.
High SellersIt has already been mentioned but amily members o Licorice have
sold or high prices at many sales. Te highest one is Savage-Leigh
Lavisha (s. oystory) who sold to Ludwig Farms, Ill. during the Inter-
national Intrigue 2009 or $340,000. Her ull sister sold at the Field o
Dreams Sale or $48,000 to Stanton Bros Ltd, Ontario. At the Stars o
Savage-Leigh 2007, Savage-Leigh Allen Leola sold or $70,000 and atthe Global Glamour Sale 2008 a Shottle daughter, Savage-Leigh Lola
EX-93-USA, rom Licorice sold or $150,000.
High IndexAnother successul flush or Linda was
with Skychie. Te highest scored daugh-
ter rom the flush is Savage-Leigh Louise
EX-94-USA, who has an EX-92-USA
Dundee, an EX-90-USA Durham and a
VG-88-I Elegant daughter in Italy at
Al.Be.Ro. Te Elegant has a Man-O-Man
son at Semex with a GPI o +2218, All.
Nure Starblue-E. Te ull sister o Star-
blue is now proving hersel as a very valu-
able brood cow with two Supersire daugh-
ters indexing very high. All.Nure Supersire
Eleonor scores +2417 or GPI and +3390
GPA-LPI and her sister Eluana comes in
close behind with a GPI o +2412 and
GPA-LPI o +3335 both heiers are owned
by Al.Be.Ro, Diamond Genetics and Pon-
derosa, Spain.
Te ull sister to Louise, Savage-Leigh Lil
Linda EX-90-USA, has daughters by Gold-
wyn and Dundee. om Mercuro o Mer-
curo Farms owns an EX-91-USA Dundee
(Ms Do-N-Joy Dunde Laurie) daughter o
Lil Linda. Mercuro is extremely satisfied
with the consistency o the amily sharing,
I never worked with a cow amily rom which I got so many good
calves and cows, they all have that great open dairy rame and beauti-
ul udders, that milk really well. Tis amily is extremely consistent."
Do-N-Joy Gold Lin-Rae VG-87-USA, owned by Do-N-Joy Holsteins,
Minnesota, is a maternal sister by Goldwyn to Laurie. She has a Gaborson at Accelerated, Fb D-N-J Gabor Link-E GPI+2185. Lin-Rae
also has a VG-88-USA Baxter daughter, Do-N-Joy Baxter Loree, who
has a Beacon daughter with a GPI o +2102. Lorees ull sister, Do-N-
Joy Baxter Lilly VG-86-USA, has a high-ranking Iota daughter, Do-N-
Joy Iota Lilac GPI+2227.
LizaAnother dominant breeding line is the one o Lindas Leduc daughter,
Savage-Leigh Leduc Liza EX-90-USA. Liza has an EX-90-USA Zenith
daughter, Savage-Leigh Zenith Liz who is the dam o Savage-Leigh
NH Mac Liza VG-87-DE owned by Nosbisch, Germany. Savage-Leigh
Golden Liz-E EX-93-CAN is her highest scoring daughter and is
owned by Idee Holsteins, Canada. Dean Craswell rom Idee Holsteins:
We bought her as a second lactation cow at an auction because I re-
ally like the Linda cow amily. Tey breed very consistent with great
dairy rames, open rib, quality udders and they are silky black.
Te maternal sister to Golden Liz, Savage-Leigh Golden Lizzy, is
owned by Monanran Farms and has an Observer daughter with a
GPA-LPI o +3000, owned by Quality Holsteins, Ontario. She also has
an EX-90-CAN Sanchez daughter, Monanran-JS Sanchez Libby.
Te Bellwood Linda cow amily receives worldwide appreciation be-
cause o their consistent pattern o breeding. Dairy, great udders andsilky black keeps showing up generation afer generation. One thing is
or sure; we have not seen the last rom the Lindas.

Many breeders recognize how the reproductive tools of In Vitro Fertilization and Reverse Sorted
Semen make a powerful combination. IVF can work well on virgin heifers, pregnant females, and/or
problem donors. Using Reverse Sorted Semen with IVF can allow you to produce pregnancies of the
desired gender from almost any bull, which can make a huge impact on your operations profitability.

Story:Its almost impossible to mention all the show
titles from one of the most successful Red & White
cows in the Netherlands, Zeedieker Mon-Chri 1 EX-92-NL. She won 25 show titles already, including
twice the National title at the HHH-Show in 2009
and 2010! Mon-Chri 1 won her last ti-
tle at 9-years of age, Grand Champion
at Oldebroek 2013. Her mother was a
Lentini-daughter imported by Zeed-
ieker Holsteins from Germany.
Breeder Comments: Evert Koren-
berg: Several people commented Mon-Chri as the
true type cow. Every show we go to people come tosee Mon-Chri in the show string. Since 2007 she
can battle with the absolute top on the shows. Per-
sonally its a great cow for us to work with, she is a
calm cow and most of the time she is eating. She
is served now to Fever and we hope she is preg-
nant so we can participate with her at the National
Show (NRM) 2014. Currently she has produced over
80.000 kg milk. We are looking forward with the
next generation and sisters, so far we have a third
calf Retinue Red daughter, a Lawn Boy and two Sa-vards. Best new family member is Mon-Chris Acme
sister from which we expect a lot.
LAVENHAM DURHAM ADEEN | EXCELLENT-92-UK EEEVBreeder: Lavenham Holsteins (UK)Owner: Riverdane, Holmland and Carldanton Holsteins (UK)
Show Results: Intermediate and Grand Champion Great Yorkshire Show 2013
Breed Champion, Agriscot 2012 Interbreed Champion, Dairy Expo 2013
Story:Lavenham Durham Adeen is one of the great-
est cows in the UK right now with her most recent
victory at the Great Yorkshire Show 2013, captur-
ing grand champion honors. She is a
Durham daughter straight out of Ms
Kingstead Chief Adeen EX-94-USA,
the granddam to Atlee EX-92-USA,
the mother of Atwood, Aftershock,
Golden Dream, Delete and more!
Adeens popularity remains strong in the UK. Her
first Goldwyn daughter topped the Holmland disper-
sal sale at 14,500 gns last year and went on to score
VG88-2yr an won champion heifer at the National
All Breeds Show and Reserve All-Britain intermedi-
ate heifer in milk 2012. This year, another Goldwyn
daughter, Absolute Goldwyn Adeen, was the top
price lot at the Genetic Elite Sale, with a final bid of
10,000gns.
CARF EMERAUDE | EXCELLENT-91-FR EEEVBreeder: Carf Holsteins (FR)Owner: Diamond Genetics & JK Eder Holsteins (NL)
Show Results: 2-Yr. Old Champion National Show France 2011 2-Yr. Old Champion SPACE (FR) 2011 2-Yr. Old Champion Noordeloos (NL) 2011 Intermediate Champion Marinwaerdt (NL) 2013
Story: Emeraude is one of the greatest Goldwyn
daughters around with a very complete pedigree.
She was the National 2-Yr. Old Champion in France,
and then sold to Diamond Genetics and JK Eder Hol-
steins in the Netherlands where she won several
shows. Now in her second lactation,
she looks better then ever at 165 cm
tall and scoring EX-91-NL. Emeraude
is from the great French Menthe cow
family; the same as the high Semex
sire Cabon Fernand. She also trans-
mits index and is the former No. 2
conformation cow on Canadian base. Emeraude has
a Numero Uno daughter at DGV LPI +3175 with Conf.
+19 in Canada, making her one of the highest Con-
formation Uno daughters in the breed!
Breeder Comments: Jan Kolff: Emeraude is the
most special cow we ever had in our herd. She is
the complete package of fantastic show type, ped-
igree and index as well. We are very pleased with
the first results of her daughters, the line we see in
her daughters is so consistent and you can pick out
easy the daughters of Emeraude if you walk through
the young stock barn, for example her Numero Uno
daughter is one of the fanciest heifers ever born at
JK Eder.

Put together production, type, health and fitness and youhave a total index. TPI, LPI, NTM or RZG, every Holsteincountry has its own total index and ranking, based on theirspecific breeding goal. How do they weigh the differentcomponents in the index? And where does your bull orheifer test best?
Te best-known total index is PI, the total performance index, madein the U.S. Te PI is the guideline for the bull rankings, because it's
one of the most complete total indexes. Production has the most im-
pact and type and fitness are sort of equally weighed in the index. An
animal with a high PI has a good chance to a bright future. But there
are also other possibilities when you test your animal on genomics.
Te different total indexes in Holstein countries (as you can see in the
table) have different weighing factors and different rankings, which
increase the possibilities for breeders to market their animals. Te
countries listed in the table, publish their own total index rankings
including foreign (genomic) bulls. Tey are also willing to test high
potentials on genomics and are transparent in the communication of
the results. Tey promote therefore their breeding goals and givebreeders the opportunity to make their own choices and offer a prod-
uct for their markets.
Total index = breeding goalTe goal of a total index is to give farmers a quick and easy ranking list
of the best animals available for the country's specific breeding goal.
For bulls, it's a guideline to use the best ones in your insemination
plan. Terefore, the bulls in the top should normally also be the most
used bulls as they fit farmers' plans best. Te top 25 bulls should be
simultaneous with the ranking of the most popular bulls in the coun-
try at that moment. If not, the total index isn't a perfect reflection of
the breeding goal. Tis is an important point of attention for several
countries!
For females the total index ranking is also a ranking for the most
'wanted' animals of the next generation. Tey are the most complete
and fit the breeding goal. High listed heifers are popular as donors and
bull mothers. Every country has a specific ranking, and the most used
female animals score high in several rankings. On sale heifers with a
high PI, LPI, RZG and for example PF are the highest in price.
Tey are 'true types', fit in every breeding goal; regardless the weigh-
ing factors in the total index.
Although you would say that the 'true type' cow is internationally get-ting more and more similar, there are differences over countries and
also within countries. Of course every farmer wants good feed and
legs on his cows, and a healthy strong udder, but the diversities in milk
payments and management styles (for example grazing) make breed-
ing goals differ.
Combination fitness, production, typeWith every country having a specific total index, there are also differ-
ences. Te breeding goal is of course leading for the weighing factors:production, health and type. As noticed the PI is very well respected.
Germany, the UK and France put a lot of emphasis on health, fertility
and fitness. In Canada, type is influential in the total index and Scan-
dinavia puts the most attention on health, fertility and fitness. In Ger-
many, production has the biggest part in the RZG total index, fol-
lowed by a high percentage for the fitness traits. And they are having
success, as the German RZG is quickly becoming a popular index
when testing animals on genomics. It's because Germany was one of
the first countries that put more health and fertility in their total in-
dex, in combination of course with their ongoing emphasis on pro-
duction.
Wolfgang Ruten, German VTIFor several years we have focused on cows thatare productive with longevity. Farmers want to
have productive cows that live longer.
Te consequence of the high level of production and fitness is that
conformation traits consist of 15% in the total index. Feet and legs and
udders have the most weight. Tese are the main traits for longevity.
Te other traits will follow automatically.
In the UK, health and fertility is one of the biggest issues for dairy
farmers. Tey have put a lot of emphasis on production in the past,
Owain Harris, sire analyst at Cogent mentions. Tey are happy with
the production and now focus fitness, especially fertility, that's the
number one issue.
Te total index in the UK, the Profit Lifetime Index (PLI) therefore,
has a lot of room for health traits, almost at the same level as produc-
tion.
Owain Harris, Cogent UKOur PLI base is more closer to the German
RZG than to the PI from the U.S.

Harris also adds that since April breeders can test their females on PLI
and rankings are published. Te PLI ranking is different than the PI
ranking, it's the same with bulls. It gives more opportunities for mar-
keting. Harris has experienced that bulls that didn't quite rank high
on PI, can test high on PLI. When you spend money testing ani-
mals on genomics you want to see a return on that investment. By
testing on different bases you increase your chances and the number
of marketable animals.
Unique information in the NTM
In Scandinavia, the NM includes more than 40 characteristics, all-important for the economy in the herd. Tanks to the high -and
unique- level of registration in Denmark, Sweden and Finland a lot of
functional traits are available and reliable. Tat is the big difference
to other Holstein countries in the world. Te NM is our base and we
want to compare foreign bulls on the NM too, says Lars Nielsen
head of breeding at Viking Genetics.
Hoof health is an example of a trait only available in Viking area.
Lars Nielsen, Viking Genetics
Hoof health says more about longevity of a cowthan feet and legs. Tat is why conformation, including feet and legs, is weighed for just 6% inthe NM. We don't want to double up on traits.
For mastitis it works the same, Nielsen says. Tere is more correla-
tion between mastitis and longevity then with udder traits. Terefore,
Viking tests potential foreign sire of sons on genomics before deciding
to give the bull an opportunity. Tey compare it with the reference in
their own system. In average the NM ranking is roughly the same
as a ranking based on another total index. But there are extremes to
the top and the bottom and they are re-ranked on NM. When we
choose sire of sons we want to have these positive extremes, that suitthe Viking breeding goal. About 85% of the dairy farmers in the three
Nordic countries are loyal to the NM. Tey use the bulls that we as
a breeding organization advise on their cows."
Use the differencesWith the U.S. PI as a leading international total index, even most
European born young bulls and heifers are tested in this system. How-
ever, Jan Postma from Diamond Genetics notices that it's worthwhile
to look at different options.
Jan Postma, Diamond GeneticsAlthough the differences in large Holstein
countries are not extreme, it's worthwhile tocheck other countries too when you want to
test your animal on genomics.
He notices for example that next to the PI, the reputation of the Ger-
man RZG is rising. Tanks to the balance between production and
health and fertility traits in the total index. Animals who might score
on kg F and P and fitness can get a high RZG. If you expect a lower
score on type, you still might have a chance for a high RZG. As he
says this he notices that a minimum score on type is important. If a
bull is low on type (RZE), the marketing potential is smaller and that
makes it more difficult for a bull to enter A.I., even though he has a g
RZG of 155. Te weighing of different elements in the type score is
also important. Although PA has a 28% influence in the PI, it's
not said that only show type is responsible for a high PA. Te high
PI scores of Massey, Planet and Freddie, bulls that do not give show
type, prove that these bloodlines work well in the g PI system too.
When selecting a country to test your animal you can make estimate
where he/she will score best. Some sire lines score better in specific
countries. Look at the different rankings and you'll find out. For ex-
ample, million can do well in Italy. Niagra so far, is not doing well in
Germany Te most ideal animal will score high in various total in-
dexes, Jan says. Of course that's perfect and they market themselves.
It's a dream for every breeder. But it's also rare, so check your chances, ask us for information and support and make your plan for the best
result.
