ENERGY MANAGEMENT

100% renewable energy :

• Combinat ion system of St ream Engine water turbines and so lar panels to adapt to

nature ’s rhythms of the seasons.

• Energy sav ings : construct ions bui l t in a way to us ing a max imum natural l ight ,

hal f LED and hal f halogene bulbs (12V) , no a i r condit ioning, no T V, no hot water,

WASTE MANAGEMENT

Separat ion and responsible d isposal o f a l l waste :

• Organic waste gets added to the compost or p igs food.

• Recyclables waste go to Puer to J imenez h igh school recyc le center.

WATER MANAGEMENT

Two d i f ferent water sources are located on F inca Exot ica proper ty :

• A water tank system was implemented in order to co l lect some of the water to

supply the eco lodge , but a lso 3 other neighbor proper t ies.

• 100% of grey water i s being c leaned and reused through b iofi l ters .

AGRICULTURE & CATERING

The pro ject s tar ted f i r s t w i th the v is ion of a permaculture farm : in spanish “Finca ”

means “Farm”:

• The organic garden so i l i s pr imed to receive a mixture of p lants . An edible h i l l i s

being p lant ing r ight in f ront of the k i tchen to of fer a larger var iety of f ru i t t rees ,

var ious wi ld nat ive greens , nat ive tubers fu l l o f protein and minerals and

ornamentals that f rame the re juvenated landscape.

• Welcomes co l laborat ion f rom professors , s tudents or exper ts in agr icul ture or

landscaping.

CONSTRUCTION

Markus, co - founder of F inca Exot ica is an Archi tect , and p lanned ver y careful ly the

sustainable const ruct ion par t of the pro ject :

• Focused on us ing bamboo and thatch to the extent poss ible . A large var iety of

bamboo spec ies p lanted in the f i r s t years wi th the intent ion of c reat ing an on -

hand supply of susta inable bui ld ing mater ia ls .

• Cement was poured only in the k i tchens for hyg iene reasons .

• Only susta inably sourced wood was ut i l i zed and at minimal amounts as poss ible .

• Const ruct ions are spread throughout the farm to lessen the impact and maintain a

cor r idor for w i ld l i fe .

Markus is an act ive member of the Carate Community Development Associat ion :

• Suppor ts pro jects such as road maintenance, br idges’ construct ion and community

formation .

• Helps in the des ign of Carate local school w i th a focus on susta inable const ruct ion

us ing bamboo as the main mater ial .

• Twice a year a l l the employees jo in a local pro ject o f c leaning the beach, and

col lect ing them to take them to the recycle center.

• Respect of costa r ican work and secur i ty insurance leg is lat ion.

• 95% of F inca Exot ica proper ty was set as ide exc lusive ly for conser vat ion purposes .

• Protect ing 125 acres of pr is t ine ra in forest .

• Regenerat ing 90 acres of former cat t le pasture .

• Founding member of the “Refugio Saimir i de V ida S i lvestre Mixto” , an Osa

Peninsula wi ldl i fe refuge establ ished in 2007 to protect over 300 acres of land.
