n Case-based clinical reasoning Think like doctors, discuss with fellow European students, and sharpen your clinical reasoning with the help of expert physicians from Europe and Africa ! Starting from easy cases to advanced cases, each group of students will have to elaborate and discuss the course of action from the initial presentation of the patient to the final steps of clinical management. n High-fidelity simulation
Put your knowledge into practice and improve your performances without risking the lives of patients at Paris Descartes’ simulation centre. In a small team of students, you will develop some skill-based techniques as well as your team-based communication. Our team of teachers will guide you and give you some feedbacks to improve your clinical practice.
n Cocktail on the roo!op of the University
SAVE THE DATE We invite you to a cocktail on the roo!op of Paris Descartes University on the 28th of August at 6:00 pm. Relax and discuss in a friendly atmosphere while enjoying one of the best views of Paris. This evening will also be an opportunity for us to give a warm thank you to all the persons involved in the IDEAL programme.
Highlights of the week
✜ BETTER TRAINING FOR BETTER CARE Integrated into the Sorbonne University and located at three major Parisian sites, iLumens is an international training research department. Designed for healthcare professionals and students, iLumens is dedicated to teaching through customized medical simulation programs and improving both individual and collective performances.
✜ « Never for the first time on a patient » Through simulation exercises, iLumens will teach you skills-based techniques, as well as cognitive thinking methods and team-based communication. iLumens involvement with scholarly societies and health institutions result in relevant and practical curriculum, ensuring the transfer of the latest best practices into clinical practice.
✜ Hight-fidelity manikins practice makes perfect the highly healthcare setting. High-fidelity manikins guarantee an inevitable adrenalin rush and instantaneous immersion. Life-like manikins breathe, bleed and react to treatment throughout predefined training scenarios. Each simulation scenario is carried out by a multidisciplinary team, while being filmed and analyzed in real-time by simulation experts. The following debriefing is essential as it leads to an effective learning process. Through a constructive and supportive discussion, every action you take, reaction you have, and interaction between the team is analyzed. Increase your self-confidence in a durable manner, through immediate feedback that takes the drama out of distressing situations, and allows you to transfer this learning into clinical practice.
What is I D E A L ?
IDEAL (Infectious Diseases European/African Learning) is an international Erasmus-funded teaching programme running since September 2016 as a part of a strategic partnership. It is a unique intercultural pedagogical programme aiming to enhance medical students’ Infectious Diseases knowledge in Europe and Africa.
✜ The project was born in 2014 when Paris Descartes University, Sacred Heart University in Rome and University of Edinburgh first developed an international common course in Infectious Diseases as part of the European MED-MOTION initiative that aimed at removing barriers between different medical curricula in European countries. This comprehensive course, built on teachers’ mobility, was referred to as the International Intensive Infectious Diseases Course (I3DC) and implemented in each university.
The I D E A L PROGRAMME!
✜ The programme, now called IDEAL, enlarged in September 2016 to two new European partners: the University of Antwerp and NHS Lothian in Edinburgh, and to two new Ugandan partners: Mother Kevin Postgraduate Medical School in Kampala and Saint Mary’s Lacor Hospital in Gulu.
n I D E A L aims to: • develop a common strong knowledge on Infectious Diseases among medical students
from different countries; • overcome barriers and local language, culture, and academic discrepancies between
medical curricula. The project could extend to other fields and to new countries or institutions interested in this aim and approach;
• promote international teaching collaboration in the field of Infectious Diseases; • enhance international exchanges within Europe and between Europe and Uganda.
Who is involved in I D E A L ?
n I D E A L is carried out by six institutions : • Paris Descartes University in Paris, France, the coordinator of the programme; • Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Roma, Italy; • Universiteit Antwerpen in Antwerp, Belgium; • NHS Lothian Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland; • Mother Kevin Postgraduate Medical School in Nsambya, Kampala, Uganda; • Saint Mary’s Lacor Hospital in Gulu, Uganda.
I D E A L is developping 3 complementary teaching approaches :
¤ INTENSIVE COURSE (I3DC : International Intensive Infectious Diseases Course) ✜ The course is a complete international undergraduate Infectious Diseases Course. Since its first implementation in 2014, we have redefined its content annually by consensus among all partners to build up a core common knowledge overcoming discrepancies in local curriculum and pedagogical approaches. Each partner’s point of view is critical to make the teaching more international, complete, relevant and pedagogically sensitive for students. ✜ The intensive course is built on teachers’ mobility, and provided in English every year in each European university by a team of medical educators from all European Universities involved in the project. It is delivered to groups of 20-30 volunteers undergraduate medical students. Partner institutions officially recognize the course as substitutive of/or addictive to the regular curriculum.
¤ SUMMER SCHOOL ✜ The programme has developed an annual summer school to offer advanced
undergraduate Infectious Diseases teaching with a global health perspective. Lectures are based on the same practical approach with simulation games, clinical cases and round-tables. They are animated by an international team of teachers from all university partners. Students benefit from the involvement of Ugandan academic physicians from University hospitals in Gulu and Nsambya who share their unique filed-experience of Infectious Diseases. The summer school aims to foster exchanges among European students, between students and teachers, and between Europe and Africa.
¤ E-LEARNING ✜ Over the three-year programme, we developed e-learning resources on the main topics of Infectious Diseases for European undergraduate students. These resources are open-source and accessible on the IDEAL website : www.ideal-program.com
