    mix

    buildup.

    cover

    loads

    the

    case

    ofcoldtemperatures. Tarpsshouldbecapableofcompletelycoveringtheboxandfree

    ofholesandtears.

    havenotchangedwithoutpropernotification. Mixtemperaturesthataretoo

    highwill

    break

    down

    the

    asphalt

    cement

    and

    reduce

    the

    life

    of

    the

    pavement.

    b. MonitortheContractorsoperationsattheplantsite.1. Stockpilesshouldbecheckedtomakesuretheloaderoperatorisnotgetting

    materialfrombelowthepileorsegregatingthepileasheremovesmaterial.

    2. Coldfeedbinsandconveyorsshouldbeexaminedtomakesurematerialisbeingfedconsistentlyinthecorrectproportionstothedrumandisnot

    segregating.

    c. Paver.1. Checkthatgradecontrolsystemisinplace.2. Checkthatscreedispreheated.3. Checkthatscreedvibratorsareworkingandinusewhilepaving.4. Makesurethehopperhasnomixfrompreviouspavingorothermaterialthatmay

    contaminatethemix.

    5. Makesurethereisnodieselfuelonthepavertocleanhandtools.6. Checktheaugerstomakesuretheyextendtowithinonefootofthewidthofthe

    screed.

    d. Paving.1. Makesurethereareisenoughtrucksandmaterialtoallowcontinuouspaving.

    Makesuretrafficcontrolisinplaceandeverythingisinordertosafelycontrolthe

    workzone.

    pavementsurface.

    6. Checkthatthereareblocksprovidedforthescreedtosetontoallowmaterialforrolldownatthejoint.

    7. Makesurehandworkforthelongitudinaljointisdonepromptlysocompactioncanoccurbeforethematerialcools. Handworkshouldbekepttoaminimumand

    excessmaterialshouldbewastednotspreadacrossthenewlypavedsurface.

    8. Checkthetransversejointtomakesurethereisnobumpafteritiscompacted.9. Ifpavingtomatchanadjacentliftmakesuretoallowenoughmaterialfor2025%

    rolldowntoachievepropercompactionatthelongitudinaljoint. Ifthereisnot

    enoughmaterialthejointmaylooksmoothandsealedbutnothaveadequate

    compactiontopreventearlyfailures.

    10.Checkthepavementsurfacebehindthepaver. Thesurfaceshouldbeuniformandfreeofsegregation,streaks,dragsorshadows. Ifanyirregularitiesarefound

    requestthe

    contractor

    to

    correct

    them.

    11.Checkthewidthofthepavementsurfacetoverifytheplanwidthwillresult.12.Checkthicknesstoverifythatthedesiredthicknesswillbeachievedafter

    compaction.

    13.Checkthecrossslopetodetermineifthepropercamberisinthescreed. Agoodstartingpointisonehalfinchcamberinthemiddleofthesection. Thisallowsfor

    rolldownresultinginconstantslopeaftercompaction.

    14.Checkthesloughstomakesuretheyareattheproperslopeandcompacted.15.Checkthelevelofmaterialinfrontofthescreed. Thelevelshouldbeconstantat

    themidpointoftheaugers.

    16.Thehoppershouldbeatleasthalffullatalltimes.17.

    Segregation

    will

    occur

    in

    the

    hopper

    as

    it

    is

    loaded.

    The

    wings

    should

    not

    be

    dumpedduringpaving.

    18.Wherefreshlyplacedpavementisnotconfinedbycurbandgutter,oranadjacentlift,begincompactionapproximatelysixinchesinsidethepavementedge. Where

    thepavementisconfinedbegincompactionoverlappingtheedges. Compact

    towardthemiddleofthesection.

    19.Checkthespeedofthepaverswiththefrequencyandamplitudeofthevibratorstogetthebestrideresults. Itisimportanttoachieve810impactsperfoot,lessthan

    thatmayproducearipplingeffectinthepavement. Excessiveimpactsoramplitude

    maycausechecking.

    20.Afteracompactionsequencehasbeendeterminedmakesuretherolleroperatorsfollowthepattern. Ifconditionschangeandanewcompactionsequenceis

    necessarydetermine

    apattern

    that

    works

    and

    follow

    that.

    21.Checkthepavementtemperaturetomakesurethecompactionsequenceiscompletebeforethetemperaturedropsbelow185degrees.

    22.Checkbehindtherollerstoverifyplanwidthisbeingproduced. Checkthattheslopeacrossthesectionisuniform,ifitisnotadjustthecamberinthescreedto

    correctit.

    23.Checkthesurfaceaftercompactiontomakesureitisuniform,dense,andfreefromirregularities. Thereshouldbenosegregation,streaks,tearing,steelrollermarks,or

    checking.

    24.Monitortherateofapplicationofthepavingoperationtomakeadjustmentstothespreadratetokeeponpacetomeetplanquantity. Comparetheresultstothe

    calculatedspreadrate. Thisshouldbedoneapproximatelyevery500tons. Make

    gradualchangestobringtherateinline. Spreadratesaredefinedbythetonsof

    mixplaceddividedbythenumberofstationsbetweenthebeginningandending

    stations. Itisalsoimportanttotrackthecumulativespreadrate. Ifthecontractoris

    askedtoincreasethicknessbecausethespreadrateislowtheideaistogetbackon

    tracktomeetplanquantity. Iftheadjustmentistoorapidorlaststoolonganother

    correctionwillbenecessary. Itisnotgoodpracticetoconstantlychangethickness.

    25.Priortoeachdayspavingdeducttheamountofmixpreviouslyplacedfromplanquantityandrecalculateanewspreadrate.
