themethodforcheckingthefrequencyandamplitudeforvibratoryrollers.
b. Checkpneumaticrollertirestomakesuretheyareinflatedtothepressurerangeinthespecifications. Tirepressurecannotvarymorethan5psibetweenanyofthetires.
c. Checktheconditionofthedistributorandbecomefamiliarwiththeoperationandinstrumentationnecessarytomonitortackapplication.
d. Truckboxesshouldbecheckedtomakesuretheywillnotleakorhaveimperfectionsthat
may
cause
mix
buildup.
They
should
have
tarps
available
to
cover
loads
in
the
case
ofcoldtemperatures. Tarpsshouldbecapableofcompletelycoveringtheboxandfree
ofholesandtears.
3. Duringpaving.A. PlantInspector.
a. Completedocumentationofproductionandpaving.1. MaintainuptodateandaccuraterecordsincludingInspectionReports,Mix
BitumenCutOffReports,mixtemperaturecharts,deliveredasphaltcement,
plantsettings,scalechecks,andothers.
2. Visitthecontrolshacktoobserveplantoperation. Notemixtemperatureandplantsettingstomakesurethingsarerunningsmoothlyandplantsettings
havenotchangedwithoutpropernotification. Mixtemperaturesthataretoo
highwill
break
down
the
asphalt
cement
and
reduce
the
life
of
the
pavement.
b. MonitortheContractorsoperationsattheplantsite.1. Stockpilesshouldbecheckedtomakesuretheloaderoperatorisnotgetting
materialfrombelowthepileorsegregatingthepileasheremovesmaterial.
2. Coldfeedbinsandconveyorsshouldbeexaminedtomakesurematerialisbeingfedconsistentlyinthecorrectproportionstothedrumandisnot
segregating.

3. Trucksshouldbecheckedtomakesuretheyhavebeencleanedoutanddieselfuelisnotbeingusedasareleaseagent.
4. Lookatthesurgebinorsilotomakesureitisnotleakingmaterial.5. Observetrucksbeingloadedtomakesuresegregationisnotbeingcaused.6. Checktoseethattarpsareavailabletocoverloadsincoolweather. Tarps
shouldbefreeofripsandtearsandshouldbelargeenoughtocompletely
coverthebox.
7. Ingeneraltrytobeawareofanythingthatmaycauseproblemstothemixorontheroad.

a. Distributor1. Checktheamountoftackinthedistributor.2. Checkthetemperatureofthetack. Ifitistoocoolitwillnotsprayproperlyandifit
istoohotitmaybegintobreakinthedistributor.
3. Collectsamplesasrequired.4. Makesurethespraybarisheated.5. Knowwhatthedilutionrateis.6. Makesurethepavingsurfaceisclean. Tackwillbondtodustanddirtonthe
roadwayandcouldbepickedupbytrucksandthepaver.
7. Checkthatallnozzlesareworkingproperly.8. Checkthebarheighttomakesurecoverageofthepavingsurfaceisuniform.9. Makesureanyverticalsurfacesaretackcoated.10.Recordthebeginningandendingstationsofeachtackshot.11.Aftertackisappliedchecktheamountoftackleftinthedistributortocheckand
recordtherateofapplication.
b. Rollers1. Makesurethereareenoughrollerstoproperlycompactthepavement.2.
Check
to
see
that
spray
bar
uniformly
applies
water
to
the
roller
drum.
3. Checkthatvibratorsareworkingproperlyandchecktheamplitudeandfrequencyofthevibrators.
4. Verifythemanufacturersrecommendedcontactpressureforpneumaticrollers.Checktirepressuresandmakesurealltiresareinflatedtothesamepressure;there
shouldbenomorethan5psidifferencebetweenanyofthetires.
c. Paver.1. Checkthatgradecontrolsystemisinplace.2. Checkthatscreedispreheated.3. Checkthatscreedvibratorsareworkingandinusewhilepaving.4. Makesurethehopperhasnomixfrompreviouspavingorothermaterialthatmay
contaminatethemix.
5. Makesurethereisnodieselfuelonthepavertocleanhandtools.6. Checktheaugerstomakesuretheyextendtowithinonefootofthewidthofthe
screed.
d. Paving.1. Makesurethereareisenoughtrucksandmaterialtoallowcontinuouspaving.
Makesuretrafficcontrolisinplaceandeverythingisinordertosafelycontrolthe
workzone.
2. Ideallythepavershouldneverstop.

3. Checkthatthereisadequateguidanceforthepaveroperatortofollowtoproducestraighttangentsandsmoothcurves.
4. Collecthaulticketsforeachloadofmixdelivered.5. Checkthemixtemperature. Coldmixoracoldscreedwillresultintearingthe
pavementsurface.
6. Checkthatthereareblocksprovidedforthescreedtosetontoallowmaterialforrolldownatthejoint.
7. Makesurehandworkforthelongitudinaljointisdonepromptlysocompactioncanoccurbeforethematerialcools. Handworkshouldbekepttoaminimumand
excessmaterialshouldbewastednotspreadacrossthenewlypavedsurface.
8. Checkthetransversejointtomakesurethereisnobumpafteritiscompacted.9. Ifpavingtomatchanadjacentliftmakesuretoallowenoughmaterialfor2025%
rolldowntoachievepropercompactionatthelongitudinaljoint. Ifthereisnot
enoughmaterialthejointmaylooksmoothandsealedbutnothaveadequate
compactiontopreventearlyfailures.
10.Checkthepavementsurfacebehindthepaver. Thesurfaceshouldbeuniformandfreeofsegregation,streaks,dragsorshadows. Ifanyirregularitiesarefound
requestthe
contractor
to
correct
them.
11.Checkthewidthofthepavementsurfacetoverifytheplanwidthwillresult.12.Checkthicknesstoverifythatthedesiredthicknesswillbeachievedafter
compaction.
13.Checkthecrossslopetodetermineifthepropercamberisinthescreed. Agoodstartingpointisonehalfinchcamberinthemiddleofthesection. Thisallowsfor
rolldownresultinginconstantslopeaftercompaction.
14.Checkthesloughstomakesuretheyareattheproperslopeandcompacted.15.Checkthelevelofmaterialinfrontofthescreed. Thelevelshouldbeconstantat
themidpointoftheaugers.
16.Thehoppershouldbeatleasthalffullatalltimes.17.
Segregation
will
occur
in
the
hopper
as
it
is
loaded.
The
wings
should
not
be
dumpedduringpaving.
18.Wherefreshlyplacedpavementisnotconfinedbycurbandgutter,oranadjacentlift,begincompactionapproximatelysixinchesinsidethepavementedge. Where
thepavementisconfinedbegincompactionoverlappingtheedges. Compact
towardthemiddleofthesection.
19.Checkthespeedofthepaverswiththefrequencyandamplitudeofthevibratorstogetthebestrideresults. Itisimportanttoachieve810impactsperfoot,lessthan
thatmayproducearipplingeffectinthepavement. Excessiveimpactsoramplitude
maycausechecking.
20.Afteracompactionsequencehasbeendeterminedmakesuretherolleroperatorsfollowthepattern. Ifconditionschangeandanewcompactionsequenceis
necessarydetermine
apattern
that
works
and
follow
that.
21.Checkthepavementtemperaturetomakesurethecompactionsequenceiscompletebeforethetemperaturedropsbelow185degrees.
22.Checkbehindtherollerstoverifyplanwidthisbeingproduced. Checkthattheslopeacrossthesectionisuniform,ifitisnotadjustthecamberinthescreedto
correctit.

23.Checkthesurfaceaftercompactiontomakesureitisuniform,dense,andfreefromirregularities. Thereshouldbenosegregation,streaks,tearing,steelrollermarks,or
checking.
24.Monitortherateofapplicationofthepavingoperationtomakeadjustmentstothespreadratetokeeponpacetomeetplanquantity. Comparetheresultstothe
calculatedspreadrate. Thisshouldbedoneapproximatelyevery500tons. Make
gradualchangestobringtherateinline. Spreadratesaredefinedbythetonsof
mixplaceddividedbythenumberofstationsbetweenthebeginningandending
stations. Itisalsoimportanttotrackthecumulativespreadrate. Ifthecontractoris
askedtoincreasethicknessbecausethespreadrateislowtheideaistogetbackon
tracktomeetplanquantity. Iftheadjustmentistoorapidorlaststoolonganother
correctionwillbenecessary. Itisnotgoodpracticetoconstantlychangethickness.
25.Priortoeachdayspavingdeducttheamountofmixpreviouslyplacedfromplanquantityandrecalculateanewspreadrate.
