SIZE AND DIMENSIONSSurya’s lamps are listed in two dimensions—width and height (W x H).

“WIDTH” always refers to the widest part of the lamp. In most cases, the width will be taken from the shade, since the lamp shade is typically wider than the base.

“HEIGHT” refers to the height of the lamp when assembled—from the bottom of the base to the top of the finial. Surya’s lamps range in height from 26" to 42" (table lamps) and from 62" to 74" (floor lamps). Lamp widths range from 11" to 18".

CORD LENGTH is measured from where the cord exits the lamp to the end of the cord. The cords on Surya’s lamps are either 8' (table) or 12' (floor lamp).

LAMP COMPONENTS

FINIAL - A small finishing ornament that is attached to the top of the harp; can be simple or ornate

HARP - The wire support that attaches at the socket and supports the shade at the top of the lamp

NECK - The portion of the lamp that connects the harp, saddle and socket to the base of the lamp

SADDLE - A metal base to which the harp attaches

SOCKET - A threaded screw base used to hold and connect a lightbulb to a power source

UL LABEL - Certifies that an electrical product has been tested and complies with UL safety standards

CONSTRUCTION GUIDE

HAND-KNOTTEDCOST*: $500 to $4,200

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 4 to 6 months

Hand-knotting is the most intricate, labor-intensive rug weaving process in use today. A higher number of knots per square inch typically translates to better quality. A complex pattern can require very dense knotting and takes a long time to produce. An average weaver can tie about 3,000 knots per day.

DURABILITY: Guest room is typically 5 to 10+ years depending on use and a public space is typically 2 to 7 years.

SHEDDING: Sheds less than a typical hand-tufted rug.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: Individual knots are visible on the back of hand-knotted rugs, making it possible to see the overall pattern and colors used on the rug’s surface. Weaving and knots will be slightly uneven. The fringe of a hand- knotted rug is an extension of the rug’s foundation.

*Cost is based on a 5' x 8' rug size.

**Manufacturing time on all rug construction types includes: spinning and dyeing wool, weaving, finishing and transportation.

HAND-TUFTEDCOST*: $300 to $500

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 2 to 4 months

Generally less expensive and easier to construct than hand-knotted rugs, hand-tufted rugs are made using a hand-operated tool to punch strands of wool or other fibers into canvas stretched on a frame. After tufting, the rug is removed from the frame and a backing is applied. Bindings may be attached to the edges of the rug to add strength and prevent unraveling.

DURABILITY: Guest room is typically 2 to 10 years depending on use and a public space is typically 3 to 5 years.

SHEDDING: Sheds initially, subsiding over time. Degree of shedding depends on wool quality and rug density. Less expensive hand-tufted rugs shed more than higher end hand-tufted rugs.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: An adhesive is used to attach a canvas material (backing) to the back of hand-tufted rugs to hold the yarns together. Tufted rugs typically have a cut pile surface, although some designs have both loop and cut pile combined to add a dimensional effect to the pattern.

SURYA HOSPITALITY 2014 13

HAND-HOOKEDCOST*: $200 to $800

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 2 to 4 months

Hand-hooked rugs go through the same process as hand-tufted rugs. Tufted rugs, however, have a cut pile surface, while hooked rugs feature a looped pile surface. Often, rugs will combine both techniques.

DURABILITY: Guest room is typically 2 to 10 years depending on use and a public space is typically 3 to 5 years.

SHEDDING: Sheds less than hand-tufted rugs, subsiding over time.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: Similar to hand-tufted rugs, an adhesive is used to attach a canvas backing to the back of hand-hooked rugs to hold the yarns together. The surface pile of a hand-hooked rug will appear looped (rounded).

*Cost is based on a 5' x 8' rug size.

**Manufacturing time on all rug construction types includes: spinning and dyeing wool, weaving, finishing and transportation.

HAND-LOOMED SHAGCOST*: $200 to $800

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 2 to 4 months

Hand-loomed shag rugs are made on hand-operated looms with hundreds of plush, twisted and slightly felted yarns. A team of weavers uses a long steel rod to shoot the fibers across vertical strings that run the length of the rug. Each fiber can be as long as 6".

DURABILITY: Guest room is typically 2 to 10 years depending on use and a public space is typically 3 to 5 years.

SHEDDING (WOOL): Moderate shedding for an extended period, subsiding over time.

SHEDDING (POLYESTER): Minimal shedding.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: Identifiable by a deep pile, giving it a shaggy appearance. May or may not have a canvas backing.

HAND-WOVEN FLATWEAVECOST*: $200 to $600

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 2 to 4 months

Often referred to as dhurries or kilims, flatweave rugs are woven on a loom, rather than knotted. They are typically constructed from wool, cotton or synthetic materials. In most cases, the pattern on the front of the rug can be viewed clearly from both sides, making these rugs reversible.

DURABILITY: Guest room is typically 2 to 10 years depending on use and a public space is typically 3 to 5 years.

SHEDDING: Moderate shedding, subsiding over time.

REVERSIBLE: Can extend rug life by flipping the rug.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: Because they are woven rather than knotted, flatweave rugs do not have a tufted pile, which gives them their “flat” appearance when compared to other rug constructions. The design of a flatweave rug typically appears the same on the front as on the back.

HAND-LOOMED WOOLCOST*: $200 to $600

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 2 to 4 months

Hand-loomed wool rugs are constructed on hand-operated looms by a team of weavers who use a long steel rod to shoot fibers across vertical strings that run the lengths of the rug. In this construction, rugs can be all cut pile, cut-and-loop pile or all loop pile. In some cases, the rug may be hand-carved to accentuate texture and design.

DURABILITY: Guest room is typically 2 to 10 years depending on use and a public space is typically 3 to 5 years.

SHEDDING: Moderate shedding, subsiding over time. Degree of shedding depends on wool quality and rug density. Less expensive hand-loomed rugs will shed more than higher end hand-loomed rugs.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: Low to medium pile. May or may not have a canvas backing.

MACHINE-MADECOST*: $100 to $400

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 2 to 4 months

Machine-made rugs are produced by large machines that have hundreds of spindles of fiber that are mechanically woven into a thin mesh backing. The machine runs continuously to optimize efficiency. A computer dictates the pattern, minimizing the chance for error.

DURABILITY: Guest room is typically 2 to 5 years depending on use and a public space is typically 1 to 2 years.

SHEDDING: Machine-made polyester rugs will not shed. Since most rugs of this type are made from synthetic fibers, the pile will crush with heavy traffic.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: As with hand-knotted rugs, the rug pattern and colors are visible on the back of these rugs. However, a coarse latex backing is used to secure the fibers in place. The back of a machine-made rug will look very uniform and even (in contrast to the back of a hand-knotted rug, which will have slightly uneven knots).

*Cost is based on a 5' x 8' rug size.

**Manufacturing time on all rug construction types includes: spinning and dyeing wool, weaving, finishing and transportation.

INDOOR/OUTDOORCOST*: $100 to $400

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 2 to 4 months

Indoor/outdoor rugs are made solely of synthetic fibers—including olefin, polyester, polypropylene and PVC (polyvinyl chloride)—that have been infused with UV inhibitors to minimize fading. These rugs are mold- and mildew-resistant and can withstand up to 500 hours of direct sunlight.

DURABILITY: Guest room is typically 2 to 5 years depending on use and a public space is typically 1 to 2 years.

SHEDDING: None

HOW TO IDENTIFY: Indoor/outdoor rugs can be hand-hooked or machine-made and typically have a latex, rubber or vinyl backing, which enables them to withstand the elements.

NATURAL FIBERCOST*: $100 to $400

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 2 to 4 months

While not a true construction, natural (plant-based) fiber rugs possess their own unique characteristics. They are constructed of tightly woven fibers such as bamboo, cotton, jute, linen, seagrass and sisal to create a casual and relaxed look and feel. The fibers are often bleached or dyed to increase design options and aesthetic appeal. It is important to keep in mind that, as with other rugs, placing natural fiber rugs in direct sunlight several hours a day can result in the fading of dyed materials and gradual darkening of undyed fibers. Natural fibers can be blended with other fibers to create a multitude of design options.

DURABILITY: Guest room is typically 2 to 4 years depending on use and a public space is typically 1 to 2 years.

SHEDDING: Very minimal.

ADDITIONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Static resistant, naturally insulating, eco-friendly/biodegradable.

Note: Natural fiber rugs are not recommended for hospitality due to staining and flammability concerns.

HAIR-ON-HIDECOST*: $700 to $2,000

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 2 to 4 months

Hair-on-Hide rugs are hand-crafted of natural hides to create a myriad of designs. They may be dyed in a number of colors, or the natural coloration may be used. Due to the innate differences among hides, subtle variations in dye lot, color and pattern can be expected. Brands and other markings add character to hide rugs—making each a one- of-a-kind piece to create a truly authentic look.

DURABILITY: Guest room is typically 2 to 4 years depending on use and a public space is typically 1 to 2 years.

SHEDDING: Very minimal.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: These rugs typically have a felted backing.

Note: Hair-on-hide rugs are not recommended for hospitality due to staining and flammability concerns.

How to identify: See “Rug Fiber Comparison” chart on page 17.

SAMPLE PROGRAM & COLOR

• A rug’s colors can also vary depending on the angle at which the rug is being viewed. For instance, when looking at one end of the rug, you will see the flat surface of the fibers reflecting light. From the opposite side, you will see the trimmed end of the fibers, which reflect light in a very different way.

It is important also to convey to consumers that HANDMADE RUGS ARE MADE BY ARTISANS AND ARE ONE-OF-A-KIND PIECES. As such, they may have subtle color variations due to the inherent characteristics of natural fibers and dyes. If a customer is looking for an exact color match, machine-made rugs are typically more uniform from rug to rug.

Surya uses the PANTONE TPX COLOR GUIDE when assigning colors to its products. Pantone TPX colors provide a standard “language” that is understood by designers around the world, helping to ensure consistency and accuracy when referring to color.

2' x 3' SAMPLE

SAMPLESWe understand that the purchase of an area rug is an investment. Surya offers a sample for every rug design, eliminating the need for our customers to stock inventory while simplifying the rug selection process for consumers. Samples enable consumers to clearly view the color, texture and pile height of a specific rug prior to purchase, helping them to feel more confident in their rug choice and MINIMIZING THE NEED FOR RETURNS.

Available samples include:

• 18" Corner Sample—True-to-scale representation of the corner of a 5' x 8' rug design

• 6" Swatch—Provides an ideal way to assess rug color and texture

• Sample Blanket—Includes samples of a rug in multiple colorways; well-suited for comparing rug colors and evaluating texture

• 2' x 3' Sample—Scaled down version of a 5' x 8' rug, providing a convenient way to view the complete rug pattern

ABOUT RUG COLORWhile the Surya catalog and website provide an excellent guide for evaluating a rug’s design and general appearance, SAMPLES PROVIDE THE BEST WAY TO ACCURATELY EVALUATE COLOR. Following are some things to keep in mind when evaluating rug color:

• Some fibers are more reflective than others and, depending on the lighting in the room in which the rug will be placed, the rug may appear lighter or darker than it does in product photography. For example, a viscose rug will have more sheen and light-reflective properties than a natural fiber rug, and color will vary more when the rug is placed in different environments.

RUG PADS

RUG PADS PROVIDE A DURABLE, LONG-LASTING FOUNDATION. Not only do they add comfort and cushion to a rug, but they also protect floors underneath and help to prevent accidents by holding the rug in place. The proper rug pad can:

• Extend the life of the rug by reducing wear and tear between the rug and floor, and enhancing air circulation

• Minimize rug movement, bunching and slippage

• Add extra comfort underfoot by providing additional cushioning and support

• Protect all floor types, including both hard surfaces and carpets

Surya now offers seven rug pad types, including an outdoor rug pad. A rug pad can be rolled with a Surya rug prior to shipping for convenience (additional fee applies).

CARING FOR OUR PRODUCTS

COMMON RUG CHARACTERISTICSAll of Surya’s rugs are handmade by skilled artisans, or in a specialty manufacturing facility, and are checked to ensure that they meet quality standards prior to shipment.

We stand behind our products 100 percent and will always accept the return of defective merchandise. However, to avoid unnecessary returns, there are common issues inherent in our products that need to be explained to consumers when they are purchasing a rug. The issues below are not considered defects and, therefore, are not valid reasons for returning a product.

COLORNo two handmade rugs are the same, which is part of their intrinsic appeal. Slight color variations are common for handmade rugs, as dye lots may change over a period of time. For the same reason, a rug’s color can vary slightly from the color of the sample since the sample was created at an earlier time. See page 18 – ABOUT RUG COLOR – for additional rug color considerations.

SHEDDINGAll wool rugs will shed. Shedding will subside over time, depending on traffic and wear. It typically takes 20-25 vacuums, at a minimum, to curtail shedding. Some rugs will shed for the lifetime of the rug. Hand-knotted rugs will shed less than hand-tufted rugs, and higher end hand-tufted rugs will shed less than lower end hand-tufted rugs.

SPROUTSLoose fibers that extend from the top of the rug, or “sprouts,” are a normal part of the break-in process of handmade rugs. To remove sprouts, use a small pair of scissors to snip them off even with the rug pile. Do not pull out the fiber, as this can cause the rug backing to deteriorate.

CREASESIf a rug has been rolled or folded for shipping, it may include creases. Creases should disappear within a week or two when the rug is laid out flat. Reverse rolling the rug overnight with the pile to the outside will help to expedite crease removal.

ODORRugs recently removed from a bag may have an odor. Odors are caused by dyes, yarns and shipping for long distances in sealed wrap. Most odors dissipate within a week once the rug is removed from the shipping wrap.

FADINGIf exposed to direct sunlight, rug colors typically fade over time, even if they are fade-resistant. On sunny days, it is recommended to use window shades or curtains to reduce sun exposure. Rugs in areas exposed to sunlight should be rotated at least every six months to minimize fading.

WEARAs a general rule, rugs of all materials and constructions should be rotated at least every six months to evenly distribute wear and extend the life of the rug.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF AN AREA RUGArea rugs are one of the easiest ways to freshen the look, color and style of a living space. Like any investment, a rug must be cared for properly if it is to last. Following are tips for extending rug life.

HOW TO VACUUM A RUGCanister vacuums without beater bars are the optimal type of vacuum to use on rugs. Brooms and manual sweepers are also a gentle and effective way to clean rugs. Powerful bagless vacuums are not recommended, as they use high suction, which can pull out threads from the back of a rug and create “sprouts.”

• Use the hand-held attachment to vacuum a rug, whenever possible.

• If a hand-held attachment is not available, make sure to turn off the vacuum’s beater bar, as it can pull fibers from the face of the rug and cause the rug to fuzz. If the beater bar cannot be turned off, set it on the highest position possible before vacuuming. Then, carefully place the vacuum on the rug.

• If the rug has serged (finished) edges, refrain from continuously running the vacuum over the edges, as this will loosen fibers around the edges and cause them to deteriorate.

• Avoid running the vacuum over the fringes at the ends of the rug, as fraying may occur. Use the hand-held attachment to clean the fringes.

• If a rug is reversible, make sure to vacuum both sides. This will remove grit and grime that can prematurely wear out the rug.

HOW TO CLEAN A RUG• Clean spills immediately. Once a stain is set, it becomes much

more difficult to clean. Surya’s Rug & Fabric Stain Remover can help to eliminate many stubborn stains.

• Never rub a spill, as this forces the spill deeper into the rug. Instead, blot the stain with a clean white cloth.

• For wool rugs, use lukewarm water to remove any residual stain, as wool is more prone to bleeding and staining than synthetic fibers.

• Always use clean water to remove any remaining cleaner and dry towels to absorb any residual moisture.

PROFESSIONAL CLEANING FOR A HANDMADE RUG• Always use a professional, and reputable, area rug cleaning

expert. Cleaning a handmade rug requires a process different than cleaning wall-to-wall carpet.

• Inspect the rug with the rug cleaning expert prior to cleaning. Get a signed receipt and guarantee of work before the work is performed.

CLEANING GUIDELINES FOR RUGS

WOOL* AND SYNTHETIC FIBER RUGS• With a dry cotton towel or white paper towel, blot the stain

as much as possible.• Scrape off any food or debris with a dull instrument.• Mix a very small amount of dish soap with a cup of cold water.

With a clean sponge and soap mix (avoid using excessive water), gently remove the remainder of the stain and then blot the area with a dry towel.*Avoid excessive heat or agitation, as wool rugs are more prone to bleeding and staining than synthetic rugs. We recommend using a professional rug cleaner on an annual basis.

INDOOR/OUTDOOR RUGS• With a dry cotton towel or white paper towel, blot the stain as

much as possible.• Scrape off any food or debris with a dull instrument.• Mix a very small amount of dish soap with a cup of cold water.

With a clean sponge and soap mix, remove the remainder of the stain. Allow the area to dry.

• For all-over cleaning, spray the rug with a mixture of soap and water and rinse with a garden hose.

NATURAL FIBER RUGS• Natural fiber rugs ( Jute, Seagrass, Sisal) inherently have

loose fibers and knots. Regularly vacuum rug on low power setting, making sure to vacuum from different angles.

• Loose threads on the face of the rug should be trimmed with household scissors. To avoid unraveling or damaging the rug, threads on the rug’s face should never be pulled.• Spills should be blotted gently with a clean, undyed cloth to absorb as much of the spill as possible and prevent spreading. Work from the outer edges of the spill towards the center. If applying cleaning solvents, test on a small area first. For stubborn stains, use a professional cleaning service that specializes in wool rugs. Do not dry clean the rug, as strong cleaning chemicals may damage or fade the rug.

SHAG RUGS• Spray extraction (along with use of a wool-approved product for wool rugs) can be used to clean shag rugs.• Shedding is normal for wool shag rugs and decreases over time. Do not pull yarns out, as this may result in damage to the rug.• Canister vacuums without a beater bar are most effective in cleaning shag rugs. Vacuums with beater bars and/or brushes, or those set too low, may damage the face of the rug.

HAIR-ON-HIDE• To clean a hair on hide rug, simply shake out the hide, use a manual sweeper, or vacuum it using a hand-held attachment. If a hand-held attachment is not available, turn off the vacuum’s beater bar or, if that is not possible, set the beater bar on the highest position.

• While a hide’s natural oils help to resist staining, spills should always be wiped up as soon as possible by lightly blotting the area of the spill. If a stain should occur, use mild soap, lukewarm water and a soft brush to very gently rub in the same direction as the grain of the hair.

• Professional cleaning on an annual basis is recommended.

RUG STORAGEProper rug storage is crucial to prolonging the life and beauty of a rug. The ideal storage location is a room that is cool and dry and where blinds or curtains block natural light. Rugs should never be stored in attics and basements, as these areas typically lack climate control, and temperature and humidity can vary significantly. In addition, rugs should not be stored directly on the floor since carpet beetles in particular are attracted to the area between the floor and the back of a rug.

• Storage areas should be cleaned periodically to remove dust and discourage insects.• A rug should always be rolled with the pile facing in.• Heavy objects should never be placed on top of a rolled rug, as this can crease the rug and damage the backing.

MICROSEAL & SUSTAINABILITY

MICROSEAL MicroSeal has withstood the “test of time,” dominating the aviation industry worldwide for over 25 years. This exclusive and highly regulated industry contains the most expensive fabrics in the world.

MICROSEAL RESISTS SOILING AND STAINING: Soil remains on the fiber surface. This allows for easier, faster and more efficient cleaning, thus reducing labor and cleaning costs. Since soil and stains remain on the fiber surface, they are more easily removed. MicroSeal’s benefits also include reduction in sun fading (by nearly 100% on many fabrics), mildew, static electricity, smoke density and flame spread.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY: The EPA has rated MicroSeal’s carrier as “GRAS” (generally recognized as safe). MicroSeal’s protectant is medically rated “non-toxic and non-allergenic”. The entire MicroSeal formula is biodegradable. MicroSeal does not contain any water. Therefore, it cannot promote shrinkage or color change. MicroSeal has an indefinite shelf life, so it can be stored and used year round under variable climatic conditions. VOC compliant and certified

PENETRATOR, NOT A COATER: No raking necessary. Wicks clear through to the backing. Even wicks horizontally (1 to 5 inches) and penetrates into every fiber regardless of type of fabric. MicroSeal actually helps strengthen fibers while remaining odorless and colorless. Formula won’t “lock in” dirt, therefore can be applied on soiled fabrics.

RESISTS WEAR AND ABRASION: Treated fibers are up to 60% more resistant to wear and abrasion as the soil must wear off the protection before causing wear on the fibers. Similarly, fabric fibers must wear off the protective MicroSeal finish before they can wear on each other. This “wear resistance” promotes longer fabric life and less frequent replacement.

FORMULA CAN BE USED ON VIRTUALLY EVERY TYPE OF FIBROUS FABRIC AND LEATHER: Wool, cotton, nylon, polyester blends, silk, natural suede, synthetic suede and even smooth finished leather. Formula is not effective on vinyl.

SUSTAINABILITY As member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council, Surya promotes responsible sourcing and manufacturing processes across all levels of the supply chain while using sustainable, renewable and biodegradable materials wherever possible.

As such, Surya is constantly looking for innovative ways to repurpose waste materials to produce durable and trend-forward products in a range of styles, colors and textures. For the hospitality market, Surya is introducing a collection of rugs constructed from PET yarn (polyethylene terephthalate), a unique polyester created from recycled plastic water and soda bottles. To create PET yarn, plastic bottles are sorted, ground and washed, and the plastic is then extruded into fiber that can be woven into beautiful and durable area rugs.

It is estimated that Americans throw away 35 billion plastic water bottles every year—enough to circle the earth four times—posing threats to both humans and the environment. Repurposing plastic bottles into area rugs and other items keeps millions of pounds of waste out of landfills while creating a sustainable alternative to the use of materials with higher environmental impacts.
