A TEAM of surgeons whohave been performing alife saving procedure atPrincess AlexandraHospital (PAH) are nowextending their serviceto respond to emergencycases.

PAH is one of the few hospitalsoutside large teachingorganisations to provide anendovascular aortic repair(EVAR) service. The vascular

surgery team, led by consultantsMr Jonathan Refson and MrAhmed Abidia, has been providingthe EVAR service at the hospitalfor the past three years.

An abdominal aorticaneurysm is a silent and deadlythreat to life. It is where thebodys main artery, the aorta,starts to bulge and expand at asection deep within the

diaphragm. If the bulgecontinues to expand, it canrupture with deadlyconsequences.

For many decades, surgeonshave treated those aneurysmsdiscovered at an early stage bycarrying out major open surgeryto repair the artery. This

surgery puts a great strain onthe patients body and there is ahigh risk to survival during thedays after the operation.

The EVAR technique involvesentering the artery through thegroin and inserting a stent torepair and strengthen the arteryat the point of weakness. As thetechnique is less invasive andcan actually be done under local

anaesthetic, the effects on thepatient are lessened and thesurvival rates are higher thanopen surgery.

Mr Refson said: We havebeen very successful with theintroduction of the EVARtechnique at PAH. We haveperformed the procedure on over80 patients, with very fewproblems and better survivalthan the open technique.

Until now, we have onlyperformed the procedure onpatients who have beendiagnosed with a problem andhave been booked in for surgery.Our new service will also includean out-of-hours response toemergency patients. I amdelighted that we are now inplace to respond to this lifethreatening emergency at anytime using the EVARtechnique.

Breastfeeding week is celebrated

paid his first visit to St ClareHospice since becoming aMember of Parliament on FridayJune 18.

Mr Halfon said: I wasparticularly pleased to visit StClare Hospice and meet the staffand patients. It was good to go tothe day centre in particular,especially as some of the patientswere enjoying a good pint ofGuinness! Every time I go to thehospice, it improves in some way

or another and it remains a very

special place of tranquillity andsanctuary for those sufferingfrom terminal illness.

Chief executive, RichardCowie commented: Wevealways had strong relationshipswith our local Member ofParliament and it was a pleasureto welcome Robert to the hospiceonce more, this time in his newcapacity.

We had the opportunity totalk about our recent

developments, demands on the

service and voluntary income.Our patients love meeting visitors and having the chanceto share how St Clare is makinga difference to them.

St Clare Hospice is a charityproviding specialist care forpeople living with life limitingillnesses.

They care for patients andtheir families, providingphysical, social, psychologicaland spiritual support.

NATIONAL Breastfeeding Week has beencelebrated in Harlow over the past few days in abid to raise awareness of its health benefits tobabies and mothers.

According to figures from NHS East of England,the number of mothers breastfeeding their babiesis on the increase across the region.

Birte Harlev-Lam, regional strategic lead forMaternity Services, said: Breast milk g ives babiesall the nutrients they need for the first six monthsof life. Each week that a mother continues tobreastfeed builds the babys protection againstinfections and strengthens their ability to fightdisease.

Breastfed babies are less likely to develophealth problems including stomach infections anddiabetes and less likely to become obese asadults.

Breastfeeding is good for mothers too as it helpsthem to lose the weight gained in pregnancy aswell as protecting them by reducing the chances ofgetting illnesses later in life.

To promote these benefits the Harlow healthvisiting team from West Essex Community HealthServices set up a stall in the Harvey Centre thisweek. This was followed by a breastfeedingawareness party, organised by the local supportgroup Harlow Bosom Buddies, held at the Meadows

Children Centre, inHarberts Road.
