Based off Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hatches the Egg

One day, there was an elephant named Horton who always wandered around. The elephant skipped happily and now look what he found.

He discovered a special egg that was colorful and bright. The egg shimmered and glowed in the dark night.

Horton thought to himself, “ no one to keep it warm, I shall be helpful and wait.

So, the elephant decided to sit on it but suddenly exclaimed, “Oh, it might break!”

As Horton waited for the parents to show, something magical began to happen. The eggs started to grow.

It grew and grew, till it could grow no more. Then it stopped, and Horton waited for what was in store.

The color began to fade, all except in the middle.

The egg has X’s, though Horton thought it was a

fiddle.

The X’s suddenly dispersed, each heading towards the

poles.Then the eggs began to

separate, leaving no holes.

Horton watched the egg, not knowing what to do,Suddenly it doubled, and it became two.

The eggs just sat there, silent once more.It went through that crazy phase, then two became four.

Horton’s one egg now became four.Four eggs to watch, boy what a chore.

In no time at all, Horton’s eggs hatched.Out came four chicks, each with a catch.

The chicks were different, each one unique. But all of them had, a pink chick beak.

Horton couldn’t understand, what made all these chicks hatch. But little did he know, meiosis was the catch.

How this relates to meiosis I

While Horton was waiting, the egg began to grow, this was the different growth and development stages the cell has to go through before meiosis. After the cell was able to go through meiosis, it first when through Prophase I, which was symbolized by the losing of color, which was the breaking down of the plasma membrane, then Metaphase I, which is symbolized by the X’s at the center. Anaphase I is symbolized by the X’s dispersing to the poles. Telephase I, is symbolized by the egg separating. Finally cytokenisis, this produced the doubling of the egg. Later the egg sits “silent” , this represents interkenisis.

How this relates to meiosis II

After Interkinesis, the egg “goes through the phase again” which is Meiosis II, which contains the steps: Prophase II, Metaphase II, Anaphase II, Telophase II, and Cytokinesis. After the eggs hatched each chick was different. This is because unlike mitosis, in meiosis each cell produced is different from the original copy.
