Horticulture World Oct.-Dec. 2003 Aroon Ajmera, NR! expert in Feng shui dispels the common myths about bonsai and explains an ideal garden layout with Feng Shui. Aroon Ajmera is an executive committee member of FengShui society of U.K. In addition to doing consultations on a world wide basis, he also teaches FengShui in London. A chance in- vitation to the Surup Bonsai Village to meet Aroon Ajmera gave us an opportunity to understand the secret of FengShui factor in laying out a garden for the plant lovers. Incidentally he has played an important role in channelising the positive energies through the grounds of Surup Bonsai Village, while it was being designed by Sujay, Rupa and Rudi. The energy of space and energy of time was directed towards the successful layout of the gardens in the Surup Bonsai Village through his advice and consultation. Aroon Ajmera was very open and explained that FengShui is not a magic mantra to guarantee you health, wealth and happi- ness, but good FengShui can help us to overcome difficulties during our times of bad luck and can help us to reap benefits from our good times. Like inside forces of the house, outside forces from nature also affects our life. Therefore while design- ing the garden one can always follow a simple plan of BAGUA. method of FengShui. For the benefit of lay persons we are draw- ing a rectangular space as a garden and bagua chart may be placed over it to guide you in deciding where to plant what, where the well should be dug , where to have a water body and which direction the house should face. The BAGUA chart reproduced alongside has 9 sections. In each section certain energies for enhancment of an individual life prevail. These affect our lives positively if placed correctly, and will give negative flow of energy if placed in the wrong side. This rectangular garden shown in the chart has a gate in the north and the bagua will be placed with number 8/ I I 6/ in one line over the entrance. Your garden gate could be in any direction but you will place the chart as per the 8 I 6 line. These numbers are to be placed on the top of the entrance gate. Rest is easy. Main topic discussed was the plants energy and their positive vibes. Which plant must be used in the garden? All the plants that are spiky are not good. Woods with the sharp edges are not good as they create negative forces and poison. Large leafy foliage plants are all good. To name few, peace lily. spythophylum, palm, umbrella palm, money plant and spider plant, jade and chinese bamboo are some of the popular plants. Apart from that bamboo is auspicious. Why is jade considered as an auspicious plant why do you call it wealth plant? Water in FengShui is considered Wealth, Jade has water in the 36 leaves. and has very fast growth .. Even a small cutting gener- ates roots fast, therefore it is considered by the scholars as money giving plant. Money tree plant is another money grow- ing plant. Is FengShui older than bonsai? FengShui came first or bonsai ? Why it is rumored that bonsai are no good and should not be allowed inside the house? Japanese system of house measuring which is equivalent to FengShui is called Caso and the bonsai plant were developed by them to provide spirit and endurance rather then material gain. No material gain can be achieved by creating bonsai, because of their slow growing habbits. But it does something different for a person and that is providing spiritual and intel- lectual richness of endurance and spiritual consciousness. Controversy had been encouraged by some scholars. They were against using bonsai where money is of prime concern. Chi- nese work hard and want instant gains. Chinese prefer to use all those plants which make fast money. They believe Bam- boo. Jade, Lily, flower, Money plant and Rubber all are bet- ter plants as they stimulate fast growth and enhance faster material growth. Therefore some of the scholars to popularise the mt ofFengshui tried to belittle the art of bonsai. Bonsai growth is slow and these scholars believed only fast growing things should be kept for material gain. They rejected the importance of bonsai . Since developing spiritually enduring spirit is of great values to an individual, there is absolutely no harm in placing bonsai any where in the house, and there is nothing against owning bonsai. It is far superior, as it not only teaches Values but also makes our soul rich. L-R Rupa Shah, Sujay Shah and Aroon Ajmera
