description

It’s been 25 years since the first Horsefeathers idea and designs took form, growing over time to what the brand is today. Many things have changed, be it technologies, culture, or even snowboarding itself. Such global transition has naturally involved Horsefeathers as well. The initial series of t-shirts and stickers are succeeded by two collections a year, with a full range of products for the mountain and the city. Yet a certain unrelenting attitude spans the entire time, giving the brand direction and substance. This stems, since day one, from the heart and soul connection of all people around Horsefeathers to the world of board sports. However it may sound like a cliche, we still have the full-on motivation to make the best quality clothing with great design. From the early collections on, we made sure that every piece we produced was backed by a bulletproof quality, as this ensures that style and fit can go a long way. This stands true for streetwear, accessories and outerwear.

We are stoked when Horsefeathers products become an essential part of your active life-style including many awesome riding days. Be it in the park, in the forest during snowy whiteouts, or bluebird days freeriding high up in the mountains. Extremely durable threads from Coats are the result of decades of innovation and constant improvements, as the history of the company dates back to 1750. This manufacturer of industrial use threads is known for highest quality and many patented technologies.

This is the ultimate alternative to dawn insulation. Since developed in 1983 for the uS Army, insulation from Primaloft became highly renowned across all extreme sports requiring technical, high-performance materials. Due to its ability to perform even when wet and to deliver an amazing weight/warmth ration (consisting of up to 96% air) Primaloft is a premium component in functional outerwear. In 2010 a Bluesign award was given for maximum function as well as for ecological awareness.

Zippers from Ykk have become synonymous for quality and reliability. The world’s biggest supplier of zippers first introduced its landmark product in 1966, which was an extremely durable denim zipper, still used today (Horsefeathers jeans use these as well). Since then, Ykk development has grown to zippers for all categories and types of use. The extra durable zippers used for outerwear, including the waterproof range, are currently the global leader in durable performance.

Steve Grumser’s method was snapped during filming of one of the Sane! Crew RUMour Tapes. “We found this place very late at night and because we planned to move to another location the following day, we had to do it before breakfast. But it was awesome, because it was really early with no one else around!”

STEVEGRuMSERSteve Grumser is one of the most visible riders on the Austrian snowboarding scene. He comes from Innsbruck and belongs to the local legendary Sane! crew, which has produced the notable RUMors Tapes last year. You will no doubt want to see them after this reading this interview. He is also a Horsefeathers team rider and has been on the team for the past few seasons. So we have decided to ask him a few questions... so, when and how did you start snowboarding?I started snowboarding in 1999 when my uncle gave me a snowboard for Christmas. The very first day I jumped on it and shredded our little hill near our house over and over. And of course there were neither lifts nor any prepared slopes. But very soon after that, Michi Schatz and I started to build our first kickers and were sliding across table tops, crates and anything else really. At that time I also actively played ice hockey. I was really into it, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to keep up with both hobbies as I didn’t have that much time, with all the school stuff. When I turned 16, I quit hockey and stuck with snowboarding only. You know, it was all about hanging out with my shred buddies, enjoying the party life and all that comes with it.... You mentioned Michi schatz, your shred buddy from sane! crew and your Horsefeathers co-rider. How long have you been friends?Since ever! We met at kindergarten and have been buddies since. When I played hockey, he was doing speed skating. So we saw each other almost every day at the stadium. We’ve been friends for 22 years and now we even share a house!

Who are the other riders in the sane crew? What’s the idea behind the project? How and when did it all start?Ok, that gets a bit more complicated because we’re one big family and we’re always asking more and more people to join in. Sane! are a fluid bunch and everyone who spends some time with us simply becomes a part of the project. We want to show people out there that snowboarding is all about having a great time and at the same time giving riders a feeling of belonging to a group, a feeling of some kind of group identity and team spirit. Every rider is part of this, no matter where they are from, what language they speak, or what they look like. It’s all about sharing, and this only makes sense to those who are into snowboarding. This is how we started the Sane! crew. We were a bunch of shred buddies from Austria and Germany that loved snowboarding, we wanted to ride together, to learn tricks from each other and spend every spare minute on powder. You’ll probably get what I mean by watching our new video we’re currently working on. There’ll be lots of names in it!

sounds good, what‘s the name of it?Haha you got me there! We don´t really have a name for it yet. But that just shows you that we’re still in the middle of the creative process.

no problem. Do you have time for other activities apart from snowboarding? and what is your normal day like?I don’t have as much time as I’d like, but enough to use up all my energy. Skateboarding is my other passion. So I spend a lot of time in skate-parks or doing bowl and street skating. I also started playing the guitar in the summer and I am super stoked next page

on it. But apart from that I’m just an average guy, hanging out with buddies, enjoying nature and partying a bit.

Does snowboarding earn you enough money to live on, or do you have a job as well?At the moment I work as a salesman in a designer furniture store. But I’m planning to become a snowboarding coach in some snowboard school here in the Alps, and to snowboard dawn ‘til dusk.

lots of people think that every austrian must be a snowboarder, free-skier or whatever, because let’s be honest, you have great mountains and winter conditions. Do you think that’s true? and how difficult is it in your opinion to break through on the austrian snowboard scene?

Well, it’s not completely true but then again, it’s not untrue either. Snowboarding’s really popular in Austria and yep, lots of snowboarders are total crackerjacks. You get to see them pulling nines and jibbing like there’s no tomorrow. But none of them are sponsored. In my opinion, it’s super hard to make it ‘cause those young stars who’d deserve to be pros don’t get a chance, the snowboarding firms just can’t afford it. There’s no budget available. The economic crisis is not over yet.

When we‘re talking about sponsorship, you are one of the riders sponsored by Horsefeathers. Do you remember when you heard about Horsefeathers for the first time? What does it mean to you to ride for a smaller brand (in comparison to global corporations). It’s so long ago. I think I’d heard of Horsefeathers for the first time when my friends Dominik Brunner and Johannes Münsch

got geared up in some of the Horsefeathers stuff. I loved it. So I‘m really chuffed to be part of Horsefeathers team. You know, being part of it all. I know almost all the Horsefeathers guys and it never feels like obligation or work. It’s like spending time with buddies and I also get a chance to be involved in this rider-to-rider product creation process. Horsefeathers and Sane! are really very similar, like one big happy family.

You had a chance to test the products from the Winter 2014/15 collection. What are your favorites?I think that Horsefeathers has a really good technical outerwear line, which is totally chic. I know I can’t have all the stuff, but if I was to choose, I’d go for the parka styles – Port and Cyclone. I also love Stadium, the street style jacket and all of the every-day jacket variations (Frank, Devon, Collision).

and the last question. What‘re your plans for the upcoming Winter 2014/15 season? Not 100% sure yet, but I definitely want to return to the States and ride in some sweet parks. But I also want to spend some time riding our Tyrolean powder and do some street-spots riding. Also, I need to get involved in our project i.e. designing our Sane! snowboards which we make ourselves. And there’s more video shooting of our trips to be done. I’d love to find some new riding destinations and cool spots for filming. And apart from traveling, I want to take part in a few contests.

While designing the Port Jacket, the aim was to develop a rideable and fully reliable parka jacket that would also stand strong in terms of workwear design. What you see is a heavy-duty mountain workhorse that will easily cruise over to any city during the long winter months. Various fine details such as leather patches, custom buttons, or steel-like zippers, bring out the design concept. Nevertheless as with all Horsefeathers products, function and quality is at the core to guarantee endless riding days. The fabric repelling adverse weather is the ultraTech 10k with 10.000mm Waterproofness and 10.000g/m2 Breathability with outer DWR treatment. Fully taped seams, Ykk zippers and other fine features (like the custom designed audio pocket for beats on the go) are, of course, the norm.

The photo of Darek Bergmann shot by Yan Renelt was taken in the Austrian resort of Stubai. „After finishing a photo shoot at the local park, we started looking for street spots. We found this one by a local reservoir. There was an old boat full of ice sitting right above this balcony, so we had to get rid of it to clear the takeoff. Then we clipped the bungee on and started shooting. The approach was high speed on a twisting track and it was time to enjoy this step down setup. In one of my attempts I did this double tail grab. I have to say this is a numerouno trick for me right now.”

It was taken on a top of a slag pile and it was a mission for all of us to get in, as we had to sneak in secretly. And we were extremely lucky, because the next day we could not get through guards to that spot.”Photo: Stepan Artemev

THE MAkING OF… A HORSEFEATHERS PRODuCT It is a fairly lengthy and complex process to get our product onto store shelves. It all begins with creating the design and the cuts in the Horsefeathers design department. „A product, which is being made has to be not only according to the newest trends, but also functional and excellent quality“, said Pepe Šetele, the men’s collection designer. „I’ve been working for Horsefeathers for 10 years now and we have moved forward a lot during this time. But we constantly make sure we do not lose the connection with our roots. We also continuously analyze where and how our products are made, and regularly visit the factories where we get a chance to talk to people who manufacture our products. We have great, friendship based relationships with most of our suppliers, which is not very common in our industry”, he continues. This is confirmed by the fact that a substantial part of Horsefeathers production is still based within the European union countries, including the Czech Republic. On the other hand, technically demanding outerwear is made in cooperation with Taiwanese manufacturers who are the absolute industry leaders. As explained by Pepe: “The material quality, it’s processing including garment manufacture, has always been our top priority. Therefore we maintain a good relationship with the suppliers and production facilities and continue the cooperation even at times, when some brands opt for cheaper, but not the greatest quality elsewhere. It does work, as the number of returned products is extremely low.” The quality of Asian production and the working conditions in the factories, are regularly inspected by a very trusted Horsefeathers employee, who lives in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. Let’s go back to the production process. Sketches and designs are used to produce a specific product pattern. Exact measurements and sizes are recorded in a production manual, which is used

to produce a prototype. Once manufactured, it needs to be thoroughly compared to designer’s specifications, re-measured again and worn to test wearability. Manufacturers are then sent a comprehensive list of comments and observations together with photo documentation to facilitate corresponding production. In the meantime, suitable materials are selected and tested, and specific colour combinations are sent to production laboratories. The manufacturer then sends back adapted so called corrected samples. If the sample product is still defective, new samples have to be produced until the final product of the desired quality is produced.Next, catalogue samples and samples are produced in all colour variations. This sample collection also includes products, which will be tested by Horsefeathers riders. The technical outerwear products are tested in mountain environments and extreme conditions. The mentioned samples are used in a printed catalogue, which is then distributed by our dealers to retailers and international distributors to introduce our collections. Before the production, pre-production samples must be approved by both sides (HF - manufacturer), in order to agree on the final product. Once all products are manufactured they are brought together to a central logistics location and then distributed to retailers. In short, this is what it takes, but in reality the process takes much longer and is much more complex. “The whole process goes through the cycle twice a year. In autumn, when the spring collection is being prepared, and then in spring, when we start preparing the winter collection. However, it takes a year and half for the collection to be launched. When you’re really into it, sometimes you lose a track of time and don’t realise what year it is,” laughs Pepe.

Pepe Šetele has been working for Horsefeathers for the past ten years. Before he started working with the design and production team, he was a graphic designer designing web sites (a project he is still involved in). Pepe is a true athlete with affinity for all sports, but to mention the top of his list there is snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing, mountain biking, beach volleyball and ice hockey.

PaVEl KuBICEK

stEPanKa PIVCoVaStepanka Pivcova completely reinvented the womens collection after joining Horsefeathers. She has a university degree in design and has a lot of experience behind her. Stepanka considers herself an introvert and that’s why she’s more into individuality in sports like running, swimming, or yoga. She likes snowboarding as well as skiing. Travelling, new locations, cultures and people energize her, as well as getting to know more about new trends and styles. She is currently into healthy eating and raw diet. In her own words, it feels like a discovery of a new universe.

Where does your inspiration come from when designing a new collection?Inspiration is all around me. I like to sketch designs whenever something pops up in my mind. I enjoy travelling. My well of inspiration is wide open, especially when I’m in new surroundings, or surrounded by interesting people. I also have my secret drawer stash of designs I sketch throughout the year. When I begin to design the summer collection in January, I can just dip in and see what inspirational thoughts I had perhaps in Portugal, or in France. The winter collection design begins in March-April when I’m usually enjoying myself up the mountains. I’ve got inspiration all around me on the slopes.

How difficult is it for a designer to predict current trends? Well, all my friends ask me what to wear next year. If they knew how much I hate that question! I tell them: “You’ll be wearing anything you fancy, right?” Trends are difficult to predict and besides, each brand sets its own trends. It’s all about being different and original. That’s what Pepe (a men’s collection designer) and I incorporate into any new collection we’re working on. We take the best designs from previous collections, analyse how we can improve them, like in terms of functionality, we add additional features and improve the design.

Recently, you can see a big wave of streetwear and workwear style making its way into the snowboard trend. It hasn’t spread massively to the slopes yet, but I’ve got a feeling that it will change soon.

You have studied design in Prague’s uMPRuM. What’s the difference between the school theory and everyday reality?I had complete freedom to let my imagination run wild when I was designing at the uni. I wasn’t interested if anyone would actually wear my creations. Now, I want to know, it‘s my everyday challenge. For example, I’m working on a winter jacket, but at the same time I have to think of functionality and comfort. When a girl puts it on, it has to look good, it has to be warm and she should also appreciate improved technical features. The difference is that while at the university I never met anyone wearing my stuff; nowI see girls wearing Horsefeathers product quite often.

What items from the 2014/15 Winter Collection would you personally recommend? The entire women’s collection . But my personal choice would be the Laika parka jacket, Flow dress and Mamba scarf. For riding, my favourite combo is: Nico violet jacket, Ivy strawberry pants and kim blue beanie.

PEOPLE AT HORSEFEATHERS

Pavel Kubicek is one the Horsefeathers founders as well as one of the owners. Back in the day he was living a skater punk life, which set him in the direction of boardsports, hinting of the future role in the, then not-yet-existing, brand. Today he also snowboards, wakeboards, surfs and does many other sports to keep his head clear.

Do you remember when, where and how you discussed getting the Horsefeathers project going with Hanus?I remember clearly where I met Hanus for the first time. But to be honest, I’m not so sure when we started talking about Horsefeathers. Anyway, skateboarding and snowboarding was our daily topic so it had to be relatively shortly after our first meeting. The plans began taking shape spontaneously and naturally.

How different is today’s reality from your initial vision? There was only one vision, and I think, Hanus and I both felt the same: We knew that we wanted to make snowboarding and skateboarding our “job”. Not only it’d be part of our work but it’d also bring us closer to what we really enjoyed doing. We wanted to snowboard, travel, and party together with people connected to boardsports to do fun, creative stuff. Riders, designers, musicians, artists, you name it. When I look back, most of our dream did come true. The only thing we didn’t foresee is the incredible amount of time and energy we had to invest into bringing Horsefeathers to life. And that means, that our time was diverted from what we really wanted to spend time on.

How do you see the brand’s future? My only wish is for all people in the Horsefeathers team to respect each other, to support each other and to share a common vision. And that the team will stick together, no matter what; like we did with Hanus.

In your position it is probably difficult to decide what your top product is. still, do you have any favourites in Horsefeathers 2014/15 Winter collection?I have, and many of them. Prophet jacket in shell, Port, Cyclone, Solace and their exchangeable features, Syndicate pants, Vert gloves, First Layer Result, Second Layer Recall, Recon and Collision street jackets and others.

Hanus salZ

JulIa HaFEMannJulia Hafemann has swapped the flatlands around Düsseldorf for the Austrian Alps. Her reason was simple and easy to understand. Mountains and snowboarding. And what’s more, being German meant no need to learn a new language. So the only fundamental issue was to make enough money for the riding and to support this lifestyle.

What‘s your job at Horsefeathers?I´m the sales representative for Austria. From my showroom, I sell all the hot Horsefeathers stuff to Austrian snowboard shops.

You’ve been with Horsefeathers for a long time. How much do you think the brand has changed since you´ve been on board?I don’t think that Horsefeathers has changed since I got to know the company. It´s still an authentic European brand run by riders, owned by riders and it’s a brand which still keeps its roots.

How would you describe Horsefeathers?Authentic, owned by riders, innovative and great prices

What‘s your hobby when you’re not at work?Snowboarding of course!

How do austrians feel about Horsefeathers? You know what, they say once you go Horsefeathers you’ll never go back! After trying just one item on, you immediately feel on the same wavelength with its background and its roots. Besides, here in Austria everyone loves it!

What are your favourites from the Winter 2014/15 Collection? There are so many of them, but I’ll definitely get the Nico olive jacket, Ivy 10 washed black pants, kim beanie and a street Laika black jacket, Mae hoddie and Flow dress.

Hanus Salz is the other half at Horsefeathers. He was one of the guys that started the rebellious Horsefeathers project in the early days of snowboarding in British Columbia, Canada in 1989. It has followed him to Czech Republic, where he teamed up with Pavel Kubicek, his friend and former highschool mate, and kicked off the project with full force. A long time has passed since, but Hanus still has the passion for active lifestyle. He freerides, surfs, rock climbs and spends a lot of time in the nature.

What does it mean to you to be one of the co-founders and co-owners of Horsefeathers? On one hand, what you see today is a result of our long-term focus, vision, ideas and plans transformed into reality. And it’s great, that it has worked out, because it gives us space for development of new ideas and plans. However, on the other hand, it is a substantial commitment. During busy and sometime difficult periods, when there’s an avalanche of problems, Pavel and I are on the receiving end. This is no 9 to 5 job and you drag all the problems around with you non-stop. So what it really means to me, is continuous learning,

especially about how to maintain mental balance, and to ensure Horsefeathers and everything connected is linked with positive attitude.

Would you say that you have fulfilled your dream, or are you still working on it?Partially yes. I’ve never wanted to be a guy in the office with a suit, working for some impersonal and global machinery. One of the main reasons why Pavel and I started with Horsefeathers was to do things our way and to also stay as close as possible to the board sports community and the lifestyle. We haven’t always had time for the sports though and that’s the point where the dreams differ from reality. The original idea was to make a few cool outfits and then spend time just riding. Nevertheless, I’m really happy about the way we’ve managed to develop and expand Horsefeathers. It’s a brand with a history, a great team, a good concept within an innovative environment. And there’s still plenty of space to grow. At the moment we are working on developing our own retail network, so Pavel and Tomas koudela (Horsefeathers Store head manager) constantly look for new interesting ventures. We want a relaxed and inviting atmosphere in all of our stores. We’re also continuously developing Horsefeathers distribution internationally. It took a few years to establish the brand in various markets, so we stay focused on our clear and long-term brand development vision. We have many retailers growing the range and volume of Horsefeathers products they offer. That’s great and that’s something we’d like to see more of. But my personal dreams are still the same – spend as much time as possible snowboarding, surfing, climbing, travelling and lots of time in the nature.

What do you think next ten to fifteen years will bring to snowboarding?I believe there’ll be two separate worlds: one of professional snowboarding with training schedules, coaches and so on, and one with the real, honest, fun snowboarding full of people who love freestyle, freeride, backcountry... If a rider wants to become a competing pro, he has to go for the drill, training and commitment. The range and the level of tricks will definitely grow, but probably not as drastically as in the past ten years. But the true enthusiasm and progress will never go away. At the end of the day, it all depends on people, whether they will still see snowboarding as pure fun activity with friends out in the mountains. Because then, it doesn’t matter whether you are a pro training hard, or whether you’re having the time of your life riding the powder.

What are your favourites in the 2014/15 Winter Collection?First, a Prophet jacket and Syndicate Russet pants combo. Not only because of the design and advanced technical features, but also because they are made from recycled materials. Then it would be Vector lime jacket, with its extra insulation, suitable for extremely cold temperatures. I also like the Cyclone jacket in a combo with Commander wood pants. And a Montana tee as a Scarface movie parody. And of course, I must not leave out On Air socks, I need those for sure!

Page 86: Horsefeathers WINTER 2014/2015

Veronika Vysinova is the manager in the Horsefeathers flagship store in Prague. She’s also a proud owner of the most gorgeous smile in the world. But don’t be mistaken, she’s also an avid bike freerider.

How long have you been with Horsefeathers? Two years. I should thank my lucky stars, really. Initially, it was just meant to be a part-time job when at school, but I did not continue, and at the same time the person who was meant to take on a full-time job didn’t start. I’ve stepped in and never left

How different is Horsefeathers Prague flagship store from the other stores you normally go to?It’s the store interior design and our customer service, that make us stand out. It really feels good to offer the customers a cup of coffee and chat with them. I’ve never experienced anything like that before anywhere else. I also like the spaciousness and the layout of the store. No need to pick through tons of tightly packed stuff to find what you like.

What’s the atmosphere in the store when a new collection is launched? It reminds me of Christmas. Like opening presents: Wow, I want this...that’s cool! Later on in the day the excitement fades a little though, when we’re up to our ears arranging clothing displays and everyone’s totally tired. But the next day is definitely worth it when you see customers really enjoying the new stuff.

apart from your work, you are also a keen bike freerider. How did you get into it? How often do you ride and what is your favourite resort?Believe it or not, it’s all thanks to my friend’s broken arm four years ago. I know, strange but true. I went to the opening of a bike-park in Sumava. He couldn’t ride so we agreed that we would take photos of our friends riding. I totally fell in love with the sport and wanted to give it a try. So the following weekend I joined them. And that was it, the bike’s been with me ever since. I ride whenever I have free time. My favourite resort is Spicak in Sumava. It is my learning ground and where I feel at home. A number of my good mates ride there too, and I really enjoy riding the local tracks. I like Maribor too, but it’s a bit out of the way.

the word is out there you have the most gorgeous smile. are you happy about that and how do you keep the smile going?Well, yeah, of course I love it. But I don’t do anything special to keep it on. My positive thinking has got something to do with it I guess. I always tell myself that it doesn’t cost a penny to brighten up the day for others.

Have you got any favourites in the 2014/15 Winter Collection?Oh yeah! Not sure if it’s a good thing to be asking a girl this question. There are about a million pieces I like . The Maddie winter jacket and the insulated Zoey jacket are definitely on my radar! And don’t even mention the snowboard pants. The colours are superb. The leggings are totally hot too. Then there’s the Liv jumper and the Lost Heart tee, and all the multi-coloured sweatshirts...well, I’d still be here tomorrow if I named them all. From the men’s’ collection I really like those simple designed tees. My favourite is the Arrow. If I was a guy, trust me, I’d have it in every single colour. Oh, and the Morning Glory tee too. That’s the best....but as I said, I could go on for hours!

VERonIKa VYsInoVa

VoJEn sMIsEKVojen Smisek, together with Michal Cejka, is in charge of sales across on the Czech market. For the past two years, he is also the snowboard team manager at Horsefeathers. He is a rider himself, loves photography, does editorial work for snowboarders.cz (online snow mag) and is also involved in snowpark design.

What does it take to be the Horsefeathers snowboard team manager?Communication is key when working in the team. I handle important information from Horsefeathers and directing it to team riders, and vice versa. I also put together photos, blogs and information from the riders. And I’m responsible for sorting out riders’ outfits and finances needed for travel. At the same time, I plan snowboard trips, and maintain necessary communication with the photographers and cameramen.

You yourself have been a rider for some years. Has it ever crossed your mind to become a snowboard pro? What is it like to be on the other side?I’ve been riding since 2001 and like many other rookies, I had a wild dream of becoming a pro. I took part in a few Horsefeathers snowboard camps and tried to work on myself. unfortunately, in 2005 I injured my spine and with it came a mental block. Since then, I take it very easy. Think twice before you jump is my credo now. I still enjoy riding, but I do it for fun. After the injury I got involved in snowboarding media and photography. And inevitably, that led to my current management role. Actually, being on the other side is sometimes quite funny. Honza (Zajic) was coaching me ten years ago and now he’s one of my team riders!

How do you become a Horsefeathers snowboard team rider? What skills does one need to have. How would he or she get your interest?Well, a top priority’s their individual riding style. Personally, I like riders with a creative and fun approach to snowboarding. Being good in a number of tricks is no longer the main criteria. What we look for is a rider who can get the attention of many people through his or her interesting performance. Someone, who feels comfortable in dealing with the media, uses social networks to build up his/her image, likes to communicate and so on. What’s also important is how the rider fits in with the snowboarding community and how he adds to the brand.

What’re your favourites in the 2014/15 Winter Collection?I’m a rider myself so there is no surprise that my fav’s the Prophet jacket, perfect for some powder riding. I can guarantee if and when we meet in a snowpark I’ll be wearing a Port parka and Commander pants. Any other time you’ll see me in the Heaven tee with Darek Bergmann photo. The photo was taken in the Valparol Pass in Italy by David Blazek and makes a really cool design.

PEOPLE AT HORSEFEATHERS

Page 87: Horsefeathers WINTER 2014/2015

WINTER 2014 | 87

Ville Uotila comes from Finland, and has been riding for the Horsefeathers snowboard team for a number of years. He has been to many contests all over the world. But now all his attention and energy is focused on freeriding.

You’ve been a Horsefeathers rider for a long time. What does it mean to you to be riding for Horsefeathers, a brand owned by riders?Yeah, I’ve been with Horsefeathers for ages and I’m super proud of it! I still remember the time I put Horsefeathers gear on for the first time and I was like, yeah, that’s me, this is the brand I want to ride for the rest of my snowboarding career. For me, Horsefeathers is not just a brand. It’s about a crew of buddies, it’s a lifestyle, it’s an adventure, and much more. And it’s really cool stuff I love wearing.

Do you still remember when you heard about Horsefeathers for the first time? I remember it very well. It was at the Dachstein Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam. No idea what year it was but it was a very long time ago anyway. I was super hyped about it right away and was dreaming about riding for their team, and my dream came true.

Do you think HF has changed since you´ve been on board? In my eyes Horsefeathers has always kept its style as it had when I started riding for them. Of course the quality of the stuff’s getting better and better. And there’s constant innovation going on but the rider-to-rider style is nevertheless still there.

What’s your story about moving from classic competitive snowboarding to freeriding?Well, it‘s been a long journey. I’ve always loved freeriding more than anything else. And when I look back now, snowpark competitions were just one part of my journey to freeriding. Still, I have so many great memories from that time, memories to be remembered for the rest of my life. Freeriding was kind of a target for me and competitions gave me the key to get there.

You had a chance to see and test products from the Winter 2014/15 collection. What are your favourites? There’s so much stuff I really like that it’s almost impossible to make a choice. But thinking of the extreme weather conditions around me, my fav would be the Prophet jacket. Not only for its style but also for all the technical features. And the same goes for my other fav, Syndicate pants.

When and how did you start snowboarding? It all started on a small hill near our house. I kept borrowing my friend’s board and always rode it wearing my winter boots...great! I started asking my parents to buy me my own board. I finally got one when I was thirteen. When and how did you get to know Horsefeathers? That was during a snowboard camp in Rejdice, which was organized by Honza Zajic. A week later the 4x4 Czech Cup (R.I.P) was on and I managed to win the Rookie category. Straight after I got a call from Richie, who was the team manager, asking if I’d be interested in riding for Horsefeathers. What are the pros and cons of snowboarding for you? It’s all about the pros! I get to travel, shoot videos riding street and powder, and I have a chance to ride with people I only knew from videos before, like Eero Ettala, Marc Swoboda and many others. You ride some pretty cool spots during the years. Which one was the top?Definitely Bear Mountain in California. I want to go back and stop time! Which other spots would you like to check out? It’d be great to do so some Montreal street riding. And of course Alaska is my big dream. Is there any spot in the Czech Republic you would recommend?I’d say it would have to be our little village called Prichovice. You’re not a typical comp rider. Why don’t you like competitions? The competitions where you feel as part of the snowboarding community I don’t mind. I actually enjoy riding with my mates here, Austria or Holland. But as for the rest I’d rather not co-mment! You no longer take part in competitions, which me-ans you do more video shooting and photography. Do you ever get nervous? What do you do when you don’t have a good day? That’s true. On the other hand I’m doing exactly what I’ve always wanted to do. I do occasionally get nervous, but I do everything I can to avoid that. I listen to music, chat with my mates and so on.

there are always injuries in snowboarding, what was the worst injury you have suffered? So far I’ve been pretty lucky. The injuries I had always appeared later, after riding. And I don’t count bruising as injury. Only once in Laax , during BEO, I was just about to do a straight jump when my meniscus ruptured and it had to be removed. apart from snowboarding, how do you support yourself?Outside of winter I do various jobs - anything that comes my way.

What is your normal workday like?I get up in the morning, work all day, go skating, maybe snowboarding and then go to bed. Occasionally, I pop in for a beer. Do you do any other sports?I can never sit around. I skate, ride a bike, occasionally I ride a motorbike with my mates, or play football and so on. I just have tons of energy! What are your plans for the future? or do you take each day as it comes? My life’s ambition is to fulfill all my dreams, and I don’t care which one comes first. Considering you’ve had a chance to see the new HF collection already, what are your favourites? My favourite is the Stadium jacket. It’s a hybrid between a sweatshirt and a street jacket. It is definitely

Horsefeathers started by a coincidence in British Columbia, Canada in 1989. When Stewart Carlson came up with the name Horsefeathers, we all thought it was hilarious. It is a British antiquated term for ‘nonsense’, an expression unused in Canada. Joel DeVille produced the first linoleum print at school, which we then pressed on anything we could get our hands on. This was how the first Horsefeathers stuff came to life. Mainly t-shirts and sweatshirts. The school we went to, was in a small town called Midway. The three hundred school kids came from small villages and surrounding farms and sport meant purely classic disciplines. Skateboarding and snowboarding were definitely not on the list and so was not punk-rock music and baggy clothing (the skate/snow style of the nineties).

When Stew bought his size 40+ Levi’s jeans, put a belt in them and rolled up the pant legs, most people just freaked out! There were about six or seven of us snowboarding and we spent every single weekend in the mountains. There is a lot of great places to choose from in the surrounding area: Mt. Baldy, Phoenix, Whitewater, Red Mountain, Big White and many more. Snowboarding was just on its way to become popular. You wouldn’t see too many snowboarders, but whenever we met other riders, we immediately got together. We compared our gear, showed each other secret spots full of powder and tried new tricks. We loved it. There were times when it did cross our minds that it would be cool to have real Horsefeathers gear, but it never really moved forward. In the end, it was all about sketching designs ‘for later’. After graduating in 1992, I took off to Czech Republic and Joel moved to Vancouver. The rest of the crew still had a couple of years of school to go. That was more-less the end of the Canadian chapter of the Horsefeathers story.

Once in Pilsen (the famous beer city in Czech Republic), I signed-up to attend a local high-school in order to fine tune my Czech. The situation was quite similar to my previous school in terms of skateboarding and snowboarding. Out of the 700 students, only one looked like a skater. Back then, you could tell the skate style immediately. It was Pavel who was to become my partner in the to-be company. We hooked up right away. I told him about Canada and the whole Horsefeathers idea, which would be cool to reincarnate. This time, the idea grew into action and by summer 1993 a first collection was launched. It consisted of 50 t-shirts and 200 stickers. Most were given away, or sold cheap to friends. But we loved it and wanted to continue. Pavel was serving his Civil Service term and I was moving between Czech and Canada all the time. Even so, we managed to create new styles and products. More t-shirts, sweatshirts, jeans, caps and jackets. There was no plan and when we sold something we made more of it, or replaced it with something newer or different. It may seem unbelievable, but sourcing fabrics and factories was an adventure of its own. There were no cell phones, no internet. No place to get all needed information at once. I would spend days at a public pay phone, calling around, talking to factories. The phone connections were horrible and sometime I just didn’t get my call through. And when we did set up contact, it was not guaranteed we could work together. Some factories had such huge quantities that it was impossible to even consider and sewing workshopshad no idea how to make the stuff we had designed. It was completely out of the “regular” clothing concept and they thought we were crazy. But in the end we found suppliers

possible to cooperate with, and we started establishing lasting relationships with them. This gave us the possibility to start improving quality, styling, patterns and to develop new products.

In 1995 we opened the first real skate and snowboard shop in Pilsen and also called it Horsefeathers - „Horsefeathers Sk8 & Snowboard Shop” to be exact. It was a punk, but cool store. At that time, we only had the streetwear collection, but outerwear was definitely on our radar. We were sourcing fabrics, components, looking for companies with technical outerwear manufacturing experience and generally making sure, that once we made the first snowboard clothing, it would be good right from the start. Lot of the manufacturers could not guarantee to be able to make all the technical features, or maintain the quality that snowboard clothing requires. Nevertheless, after few years of preparations, we were ready and in 1997, launched our first outerwear collection. It consisted of 5 jackets and 2 pants. The catalog was hand drawn by our friend. It was a success and we sold most of the stuff before Christmas. In December, Pavel and I jumped on a plane and took off to Canada for two months to ride powder and, of course, to test the new collection. It was an awesome trip. We had a huge GMC van and along with two other friends drove around different ski areas, picking up snow-bum hitch-hikers along the way. We rode almost every day - that’s what you call heaven on earth. Parties after riding seemed to happen almost naturally and looking back, I have to say it was the best trip of our lives. After returning from Canada, we exploded with activity, turning new ideas into reality. The following years, Horsefeathers went

through crazy growth, meaning that time became scarce as new, incredible projects emerged, almost continuously. We did plan to disappear into the mountains for two months again, but the lifestyle directly linked with the brand sucked us in. Instead, we traveled around Europe, went to contests, photo shoots, parties, events, concerts, trade shows, made new friends and inseparably merged with the scene. This lifestyle connected us with people and community, that gave us the chance to have a job that was actually our hobby.

It has been 25 years since the first idea and designs. What matters the most, is what connects those early days with today. The world now and then is incomparable. Horsefeathers in British Columbia in 1989 was a rebellious project uniting few friends through passion for skateboarding and snowboarding. Horsefeathers today is a brand with a whole team of people contributing to creating collections of streetwear and outerwear that are sold across most European countries.

What stayed the same though, is the creative freedom, where only the collective of like-minded individuals decides and defines what Horsefeathers is and will be. There are no corporate directives of some investment group. We alone decide on what and how things should be done. And even though we are not immune against bad seasons or global financial turmoils, the desire to live an active lifestyle connected to the sports that were at the start of it all, still burns strong. This vision connects Horsefeathers and everyone around it. That has not changed. Hanus Salz

uSE A GENTLE CYCLE!taKE CaRE oF YouR ClotHEs.

Loading a washing machine, adding the detergent and pre-ssing the button is simple enough, however if you follow a few basic rules, your clothes will not only last longer, but they will also look better.

Waterproof fabrics should be washed with special care. Fo-llowing some basic rules will greatly extend the usable life of your outerwear.

• Wash by hand in lukewarm water whenever possible.• If not possible, wash the clothes separately in the washing

machine at low temperature using the gentle cycle. • Never use aggressive detergents, detergents with

whiteners, or softeners and other chemicals. These will negatively affect the waterproofness and breathability of the membrane and also dissolve the DWR coating.

• The best method is to use special detergents which do not affect the waterproofness and breathability of the membrane and may slightly re-condition the waterproofing. These detergents are suitable also for washing sleeping bags and other functional clothing.

When washing cotton and cotton based fabrics the following rules apply:

• Only wash with the same or like colors.• Always follow the wash and care instructions on the cleaning care label.• Always wash at the recommended water temperature.• Wash sweaty clothing as soon as possible. Sweat is a

quite aggressive substance and can have adverse effect especially on colored clothes.

• Never dry colored clothing in direct sunlight. Sunlight can fade the color of your item causing irreversible color change.• Do not use toxic detergents or bleaching agents to remove

stains as they may irreversibly damage the clothing. unfortunately, we cannot accept responsibility for such damage. Always use safe detergents.

• Take care when drying your clothing. If a dryer is to be used please follow the care instructions on the cleaning care label. When drying your clothing outdoors please avoid drying colored clothing in direct sunlight. Be aware that white clothing will become even whiter.• When ironing, please refer to the care instructions label again. use the appropriate heat temperature. If the tempe rature is too high it can melt polymers, the main component of prints and plastic labels.
